On the eve of announcing his run for Congress, a charismatic Chicago politician causes a deadly accident. Panicked, he frames his best friend, a good-hearted alcoholic, and flees the scene. As one man tries to pick up the pieces of his shattered life, the other embarks on a meteoric rise to political stardom. But when a dogged detective digs deeper into the case, the political superstar must … decide just how far he is willing to go to keep his dark secret. Author Joseph Hayes combines page-turning suspense with a poignant tale of inspiration and redemption as he asks, is “the greater good” just a lie we tell ourselves to justify the sins we commit when no one is watching?

This book keeps your interest throughout. A real page turner.
It was a great read! It shows how someone can come back in the face of a horrible accident
I could not put this book down. You really feel for the main character.
Politics trumps our goodness sometimes, but can we live with our decisions? In politics, who is your friend? The ending is provocative, lots of ‘what ifs’ to consider. Was the cover up worth it to anyone? Etc.
I loved this book, such great writing and parts you think wouldn’t happened, happened. A surprising book that I couldn’t put down. From first page I fell into the pages. I don’t normally read books with politics but the author made it really easy to understand with not much focused on politics. The end made tears run down my face, specially when …
great book that holds your interest to the very end
The initial plot line is not the most original but I became engrossed in the lives of these characters and what might have been. It was a page turner for me and the ending did not disappoint.
One moment in your life could change everything. Would you do the right thing?
What a page-turner!
So hard to put down! I shared this book title with all my reader-friends
This is the betrayal of one friend to another. How one man overcame this betrayal and made a difference in many lives. While the other became empowered but had to worry about his secret being found out. I found that the betrayed obviously showed who was the better man. I cried when reading the final lchapters.
Good character development and an easy read.
This is an exciting book to begin with, but it is well written and tells a beautiful story of a life of redemption through caring for others.
I really liked it and recommended it to a few friends.
I enjoyed this book – I learned a lot about AA that I did not know. It took some turns and twist I dod not see coming. It was sad becasue it could really happen and people’s lives were ruined forever.
Book was well written and brings one from the depths of alcoholism to accepting responsibility even though betrayed by so many so called friends. A good read
I didn’t know what to expect next and I like that
Really loved this book. So fitting for what is happening with our government right now!
Great book, sad for our country
The book shows how far some people will go to get ahead in this world. It is set in Chicago, where I grew up. So I wasn’t shocked when the story brought out some underhanded dealings happening in the upper levels of local government. But it also brought out the resiliency people have to make the best of what they have and to understand where …
An improbable, but nonetheless highly entertaining story of two lawyers who were close friend and each of whom had a fatal flaw. One was an alcoholic. The other had ambitions that his wife and father-in-law hijacked to guarantee his political success at the expense of his friend. The first, after a prison term, became a teacher and leader of AA …
