New York Times bestselling author Lauren Weisberger returns with a novel starring one of her favorite characters from The Devil Wears Prada–Emily Charlton, first assistant to Miranda Priestly, now a highly successful image consultant who’s just landed the client of a lifetime. Welcome to Greenwich, CT, where the lawns and the women are perfectly manicured, the Tito’s and sodas are extra strong, … and sodas are extra strong, and everyone has something to say about the infamous new neighbor.
Let’s be clear: Emily Charlton, Miranda Priestly’s ex-assistant, does not do the suburbs. She’s working in Hollywood as an image consultant to the stars, but recently, Emily’s lost a few clients. She’s hopeless with social media. The new guard is nipping at her heels. She needs a big opportunity, and she needs it now.
Karolina Hartwell is as A-list as they come. She’s the former face of L’Oreal. A mega-supermodel recognized the world over. And now, the gorgeous wife of the newly elected senator from New York, Graham, who also has his eye on the presidency. It’s all very Kennedy-esque, right down to the public philandering and Karolina’s arrest for a DUI–with a Suburban full of other people’s children.
Miriam is the link between them. Until recently she was a partner at one of Manhattan’s most prestigious law firms. But when Miriam moves to Greenwich and takes time off to spend with her children, she never could have predicted that being stay-at-home mom in an uber-wealthy town could have more pitfalls than a stressful legal career.
Emily, Karolina, and Miriam make an unlikely trio, but they desperately need each other. Together, they’ll navigate the social landmines of life in America’s favorite suburb on steroids, revealing the truths–and the lies–that simmer just below the glittering surface. With her signature biting style, Lauren Weisberger offers a dazzling look into another sexy, over-the-top world, where nothing is as it appears.more
When Life Gives You Lululemons is a delicious sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. It reads like ‘The Real Housewives of Greenwich,’ a reality show that doesn’t exist, but should… underneath the shiny surface, both Lululemons and Prada are exploring what it’s like to be a woman buffeted by conflicting messages about career, relationships and motherhood. I’m hoping that When Life Gives You Lululemons gets made into a movie so it can become my new favorite.
I read The Devil Wears Prada years ago and absolutely loved it–I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to read another book by Lauren Weisberger! (Not going to happen again–I’ve already got Revenge Wears Prada in my TBR pile.) I love her sharp-tongued writing style and over-the-top characters and situations, and Emily is my new favorite book heroine. I agonized over Karolina’s story and had more in common with Miriam than I want to admit! Perfect beach read or anytime you need a laugh read.
First let me start by saying that I listened to the audiobook version and I was absolutely aghast that Emily wasn’t British! Like OMG! In my head she is forever and ever Emily Blunt and it took me a while to get past that. I hadn’t read Devil Wears Prada either (only saw the movie) but that in no way ruined the fun of this book for me. It was a fun romp through the differing society expectations women face in places like LA, New York and Greenwich. Each character was thoroughly fleshed out, strong, feisty women dealing with their worlds crashing down around them and fighting for what they want is always my drug of choice in the book world and this had all that and more.
Hilarious and wildly entertaining.
A perfect escape from our boring Midwestern lives.
My book club read this during the coronavirus and right before the election. The characters’ lives are so completely different than ours, and we had a very lively discussion thanks to the humorous situations and snarky dialogue in this book.
I thought that this book was really good. It is about three friends who are just living their lives. It is drama filled, which keeps your attention! It never gets boring, and if it does start to get a little boring, the author throws some more drama and it just keeps getting better! These are the types of books I like to read!
This book really sucked me into the story and the characters. Lauren set out the stall for story early and it didn’t fail from then on. I could not put this book down.
The story, or rather the characters, grabbed me by page ten and didn’t ever let go. I loved this book.
The characters Emily, Miriam, and Karolina are well developed and entertaining. The books a fun read.
An escapist romp of the highest order.
Great easy read.. very funny
A very funny entertaining book
Fun “chick lit”, enjoyable read (listen, from my experience).
Just the title gave me an idea of what a fun read this would be and I wasn’t mislead.
An easy and fum read about strong resilient woman. Lauren Weisberger is a great author.I highly recommend this book to anyone.
Deliciously fun book. If you liked The Devil Wears Prada, this is a must-read followup.
Fabulously drawn characters. This author has a wonderful ability to depict characters through dialogue. Lots of fun one-liners! 🙂
I had the best time reading this book! Great summer (or anytime read).
4 stars
The Devil Wears Prada has to be one of my all-time favorite “chick lit” books, so when I saw that Weisberger put out a book featuring the one and only Emily Charlton, I knew I had to have it. And I am glad that I did.
This was the perfect “break” from my usual genre and was just what I needed. I had been in a reading slump, reading several books in a row that I just did not enjoy. The timing of reading When Life Gives You Lululemons couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s light (but not too light!), breezy and the perfect beach read. As a matter of fact, that is exactly where I read this book, cover to cover.
WLGYL is laugh out loud funny and parts and touching in parts. I loved every second of it, just like I loved every second of TDWP. The story is told in alternating viewpoints of Emily, Miranda and Karolina, and all three had their own storyline, as well as the one they have together. Their friendship and growth are heartwarming and I cannot recommend this book enough. If you loved TDWP or a simply just a fan of Chick lit or Women’s Fiction, I highly recommend this book. It is warm, funny, smart and Emily can certainly carry a story.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster for my copy of this book via Edelweiss
Not my kind of entertainment
