Uncovering Secrets from the Past!
What mysteries are contained in a lady’s trunk that is a time capsule from another century? Jillian, a genealogist, is thrilled to be the one to open it and examine the contents. Included inside are pristine clothing, important papers and other personal treasures. Those things send her on a quest to understand the owner, Lynnelle Bendeure; what everything means; and why her trunk was left behind.
As she pieces together the past, she finds Lynnelle’s life had been in danger, her money was used to buy a large ranch, and she seemed to vanish into thin air. A hornet’s nest erupts when Jillian investigates the current ranch owners. She is ordered to stay away by a furiously angry woman named Min, but in the process, she meets Drew.
This great tale seamlessly goes back and forth between the story in the past and Jillian’s current time period. Told from a Christian viewpoint, you won’t want to put this clean story down until you get to the last page. I recommend this 5-star book that contains family secrets along with adventure, mystery and a hint of romance.
Barbour Publishing, through NetGalley has provided bookreadingtic with a complimentary copy of, When I Met You, for the purpose of review.
Once again Olivia Newport weaves a unique dual time line story that intertwines the past with the present in the scenic town of Canyon Mines, Colorado. Working her magic once again with genealogy and research is Jillian Parisi-Duffy and her attorney father, Nolan. The opening of a mysterious, antique trunk complete with all its contents begins the fascinating historical story filled with cross country train rides, bank fraud, Pinkerton agents, and a multitude of other fascinating adventures in the year 1909.
The usual cast of characters living in Canyon Mines from the previous novels is alive and well and contributing to the central story. Adding interest to the story is a handsome young man named Drew Lawson who happens to have ties back to the mysterious trunk. As Jillian finds herself drawn to Drew, she finds herself pulled in another direction with her own family issues which blurs the lines for her between professional and personal behavior.
The flow between the past and the present stories is smooth and consistent. The theme that resonates through the book for me was how the past reflects on the present. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Readers of contemporary and historical fiction alike will enjoy this book. The book can be read as a standalone.
This ARC copy was received from Shiloh Run Press and Netgalley. The above thoughts and opinions are wholly my own.

Synopsis – A trunk abandoned at Denver’s Union Station more than a century ago leads Jillian and Nolan to untangle the mystery on its content, which is with Pinkerton’s National Detective agency at the Denver office. Nolan research the legal papers, which was found inside, while Jillian looks for the rightful owners.
My thoughts – Another great mystery with Nolan and Jillian, father and daughter team. “When I Meet you” by Olivia Newport was a wonderful addition to the “Tree of Life” series. This is a stand alone book but I really enjoyed reading them in order. The character’s were well written and so likable. I was pulled into the story from the very first page. I have to say that my favorite part is the relationship between Nolan and Jillian. They both have a part to do. Nolan on the legal side and Jillian on the research side. I love the whole aspect of the genealogy aspect of the story.
I will gladly recommend this book to other’s.
My rating is a five out of five.
I received this complimentary copy of this e-book from the author and netgalley. I was under no obligation to write a review. All thoughts and feelings are mine and mine alone
Ah, the mystery of unraveling family history is amazing. Then we have a present-day family so it definitely is a recipe for success. I received an ARC from NetGalley and I loved this book. Did you notice the part, recipe for success, I couldn’t resist because I am hoping it will intrigue you enough so that you want to read the book? It was far beyond what I was expecting.
“When I Meet You” by Olivia Newport
It takes a little getting used to, this jumping back and forth from a past-time to a present-time. But it is worth the effort. One reason is you really get two stories, that are connected, all in one suspenseful story. Just how will all or enough of the pieces be found and what is the story they will tell. Everyone is important and each person is the sum of all their experiences… come along, read this story, and hear these stories. Past and Present. A really good read. Happy Reading ! !
Note: I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley with the request that I would write a review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for a digital copy of this book. All comments and opinions are my own.
While this is number 3 in the series, it’s the first one I’ve read and it works as a stand-alone. I enjoyed this cozy mystery with a genealogy theme. Alternating between past and present, the dual timeline tells the story of two women. In the past of 1909 is Lynnelle, a single young woman who is traveling by train to Denver to have the Pinkerton Detective Agency investigate possible banking fraud of her family’s accounts. In the present is Jillian, a single young genealogist who lives in a small town near Denver and is given the opportunity to solve the mystery of an abandoned steamer trunk. The trunk is Lynnelle’s and the story switches between 1909 and today. Why was the trunk abandoned, what happened to Lynnelle, how does this trunk affect Jillian personally? Lots of questions to draw the reader into the story, with answers spooled out as the story progresses to a satisfying conclusion.
This is the first book I’ve read by Olivia Newport and I really liked it! Jillian is a genealogist, her father Nolan is an attorney who loves to cook, and together they piece together a mystery they stumble upon involving an old steamer trunk given to them. Alternating between their story of discovering the secrets of the past, and following the story of the woman they are researching, we follow their search and discovery. I was fascinated, finding the story hard to put down. I look forward to reading the first two books in the series, and book #4 when it comes out.
A very well written story with lots of twists and turns as a genealogy team, father and daughter, search for answers about a 100 year old trunk. Wonderful dialogue, great characters, and lots of friend interaction too. Highly recommend. I received an advance reader copy from the publisher. Opinions are my own.
An enjoyable read:
This was a good clean mystery novel however personally I would have preferred a stronger Christian message.
I was grateful that unlike in previous books, this time somebody actually requested Nolan and Jillian investigate and they didn’t just take it upon themselves to meddle. I enjoyed the dual timelines and the mystery surrounding Lynnelle. It was also fun discovering more of Jillian’s heritage and I look forward to learning more in the next book.
It needs further editing as at times sentences were clumsy or not in the correct tense. I also found the fairly long sections of text in Italian unnecessary and merely stating that Nolan sang Italian opera songs whilst he cooked would have sufficed. Despite this I thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted yet mystery filled book.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
