Their young son told Jane that dad had been talking outside to a blond woman while she was at work. Who is she? Could John be having an affair?
And who is driving the SUV that seems to follow her everywhere?
Then John’s abandoned car is found with blood on the steering wheel and Jane fears the worst. And there is a revelation that will make her question her own sanity.
This is a super-duper thriller with twists and turns that boggle the mind. The author’s depiction of these characters brings them to life on the pages. The story is riveting from the very first page to the very end.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Book Promotions / Netgalley for the digital copy of this thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
When He Vanished is a slow burn thriller that had some good twists and turns, as well as some really good characters.
TJ Brearton is really fantastic and bringing the twists and turns. I really enjoyed the surprises and the plot kept me invested all the way through.
The only issue I had was that there were points that were just a bit too slow for my liking. That made it difficult to get through those parts. However, overall I really enjoyed this one and recommend it!

John Gable is a writer and is having issues after writing several successful novels. Jane, his wife, is a nurse practitioner at a nursing home working the evening shift while John is at home with their two children. When a man from John’s past stops by their home, John seems strained…as if he does not want to reconnect with this man. At the end of her late shift, Jane returns home to find the children in bed, but John is gone. His car is gone, but he did not take his wallet or phone. At first Jane is confused, then mildly worried. When he does not return by the next day, she knows she needs help and calls the state police. John has been sober for the past ten years, yet Jane finds an almost empty bottle of liquor in his office. She knows that John wouldn’t have left her and the children. Do the police think she had something to do with his disappearance? I found the plot a little boring as the story very slowly developed. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Unnerving story telling style. But maybe that is what keeps one captivated and reading. Admittedly an addictive read and a thriller. Lots of twists and turns. A couple flaws, but one can readily overlook them to speed along to the end.
You think you have it figured out but then you do not! This is a great book that keeps you guessing until the very end. I read the entire book in one day.
Pacing is rapid fire. Keeps the plot steady characters defined
The story kept me intrigued enough to pick up my Kindle every time I had a break. I liked the way the author kept ‘repeating’ some of the points and explaining what could have, might have, been the motive for the mystery of John’s disappearance. However, some of the parts were a little far fetched…like letting a stranger go through the house without her right there with him; like the police detective’s attitude and reluctance of getting protection to the family…like her coworkers doing ‘illegal’ things for her. I don’t know if that would really happen, but it did seem to move the story along better. I still couldn’t figure out her ‘mom’s dilema’ having anything to do with the present situation. (backstory ok)
Anyway, I did enjoy the book. I have only read one other by Brearton and gave it 4* too.
couldn’t put the book down! The author knows how to build tension.
This book was definitely a page turner. Enjoyed very much!
Great story and one that you don’t know who did it from the first chapter on. The characters are well done and interesting.
Good read. Unpredictable outcome.
As good as Connelly and Baldacci (sp)
Pretty good.
OMG!!! This book was a bit of a chore to get through. I seriously considered DNFing it several times but just kept plodding through thinking it would get better. It never did. Boring!!! I couldn’t care less what happened to any of the characters. Stupid ending making my 2star rating rather generous.
This kept me engaged and looking forward to reading this when I had to leave. I have ordered another book by this author.
It was hard for me to put my phone down. I couldn’t wait to get a break to get back to it. The narrator was excellent.
I loved the story line and the writing but there was just to many confusing plots to keep up with and the ending seemed a little unrealistic.
After 2 chapters I gave up, could not get into this book.
The main characters were very believable with good traits and failings. The twists and surprises made it an intriguing story.
Did her mother’s past have anything to do with the disappearance of her husband? Or could it be something to do with an old school mate?
