Love Discovered . . . Hope RenewedOnce a strong Christian, third baseman Shane Riley lost his faith the night he injured his knee in a freak car accident. Determined to return to professional baseball and to find the sister he treated badly, Shane retreats to Refuge, Wyoming. There he meets Melissa June “MJ” Townsend, a single mom battling the virus that causes cervical cancer. MJ wants nothing …
MJ wants nothing to do with the handsome athlete—no doubt a womanizer considering the stories in the news. But when a mistake results in Shane renting her garage apartment, they become friends. Even more complicated, she discovers an unexpected tie to Shane’s missing sister—a wounded woman who wants nothing to do with the perfect brother who scorned her.

When He Found Me by Victoria Bylin is one of the most exceptional Christian Fiction novels I’ve ever read. This story is real, raw, and not for the faint of heart. If modern-day reality isn’t something you like in your Christian reads, then this is not the book for you. Bylin tackles difficult, real-to-life topics with honesty and respect, yet sugarcoats NOTHING. Bylin’s cast of characters — MJ, Cody, Shane, Daisy, Olivia, Lyn, and Eric — are masterful representations of every-day people. This is the first Christian Fiction read where I’ve seen myself reflected and represented. I applaud Bylin for taking on tough modern-day topics and conflicts such as pre-marital sex, STIs, abortion, addiction, and assault, and doing so without judgment or condemnation. Rather, Bylin illustrates how ALL things can be used by God for good. None of us are ever too far gone to be saved, forgiven, and covered in His perfect grace. When He Found Me is the first Bylin novel I’ve read, but it most certainly will not be my last.
Shane is the hero of When He Found Me, and I struggled hard to like him. Daisy is Shane’s half-sister, and I LOVED her character. When Shane and Daisy were young, their mother unexpectedly died. Shane reacted by becoming the savior Christian boy who could do no wrong, while Daisy chose to walk down a more secular path. Shane kept winning and winning. The more he won at life the more he believed in God. Eventually, Shane becomes a Pharisaical, “what God does for me” kind of Christian. Daisy, however, just keeps getting knocked down by life. Whether she makes the right choices or the wrong, the result is the same — she gets beat up. It all comes to a head one day when Shane, embarrassed by his lowly sister, shreds her to pieces. He judges her so harshly and so meanly he spiritually and emotionally eviscerates her by laying bare all her sins and failings. After the awful tongue lashing by her perfect and pious Christian brother, Daisy does the only thing she can — she runs away. Away from Shane and from his god.
Jesus tells us in Luke 6:37, “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Judgment is God’s job, loving others is our job. When we Christians behave in Pharisaical righteousness and judge others like Shane did towards his sister, we are taking over God’s job. How prideful and arrogant! And, in addition to this being prideful and arrogant, we also run the risk of making others choose to run away from God, which is the exact opposite of what we should be trying to do. None of us are perfect. Some of us mortals make really bad, really harmful choices. We know God shouldn’t love us or forgive us. When a Christian shows us hate and judgment and disgust, we sinners can’t see Jesus. We see an angry, ashamed-of-us God and followers we MUST run away from. But when a Christian shows love, compassion, and support, we sinners see a God who could forgive us and followers who have true hearts for the Lord they serve. So much about When He Found Me is excellent, but this reminder to check our Christian motives before we speak or do is one of the most valuable lessons ever. I don’t know about you, but I know I do NOT want to be the reason someone chooses to run away from God.
I cannot stress how excellent When He Found Me is. Victoria Bylin is a superb storyteller who is not afraid to tell it like it is. I highly recommend this outstanding emotional and thought-provoking novel.
I borrowed a copy of this novel in eBook form from my Kindle Unlimited subscription on February 26, 2020, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
“Like Humpty Dumpty, he’d had a great fall. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, God had put him together again, albeit with a few cracks to keep him humble.”
This is the first book by Victoria Bylin that I have read and I am berating myself for having missed such heart-wrenching, emotionally raw, yet so spiritually uplifting writing until now. The author tackles some serious issues in this book by honestly looking at addiction, self-worth, broken marriage, and being fatherless through the eyes and hearts of devastated and hurting characters. Though it is not a light read, the plot moves quickly and involves more than just the two main characters MJ and Shane – it also includes MJ’s mother Olivia and Shane’s half-sister Daisy who bring different hurts and pains into the storyline but all are drawn to that One Hope who defies all circumstances and evil.
MJ, a sweet, gentle, kind but stubborn single mother, returns home to Wyoming with her young son to sell her grandfather’s old home to get a boost in life. She is a new Christian, still trying to figure out what it means to follow Jesus daily as she struggles financially. Shane, a freshly injured major league baseball player, finds himself in the same small town in Wyoming as a substitute high school history teacher. Though he’s been a Christian for some time now, his bitterness, anger and sense of injustice drive him away from the faith of his prosperity though he can’t help but be thoughtful, caring, charming, and loyal even in his state of emotional and spiritual darkness.
Daisy, Shane’s sister, has hit the bottom of her wretched life and wonders what more is left. Olivia, MJ’s mother and Shane’s boss as the high school principal, is caught up in her sense of self-righteousness and self-reliance. These four characters are drawn in to discover a life of forgiveness, healing, hope and unconditional love through a set of old letters and a diary from MJ’s ancestors that are found in the attic. This book is more than just romance; it’s an eye-opening, heart-changing spiritual journey that will stay with you long after the book has been put down. I’m impatiently waiting for the second book in the series!

Richly-layered, oh-so-human characterizations and an involving story line make “When He Found Me” a very enjoyable read. Author Victoria Bylin knows how to tell a tale that you can’t put down until you’ve read it through. Shane Riley is a professional athlete who questions his faith when he suffers a serious injury in an accident that just may end his career. Accepting a temporary teaching and coaching position in the small town of Refuge, Wyoming seems like a good way to bide his time while his leg heals. On the road, he is briefly acquainted with a down-on-her-luck young single mom traveling with her precocious son. M.J. Townsend is headed back to her hometown to sell the house she inherited from her grandfather in order to ease her financial situation while she deals with health and career issues. As Fate would have it, Shane and M.J. meet again when he turns out to be the rental tenant of her grandfather’s house. Agreeing to let Shane stay in the garage apartment while she prepares the house for sale, M.J. cautiously allows her son Cody to become pals with the famous baseball star. It’s not long before the three of them are spending more and more time in each other’s company, with Cody wishing Shane could be his dad. There are wishes and hopes between M.J. and Shane as well, but each of them has much to overcome. Shane is searching for his sister Daisy, from whom he was painfully and regrettably separated. While awaiting the outcome of health concerns, M.J. is trying to improved her strained relationship with her controlling mother. If prayers are answered and dreams come true, is there a chance for a happy future for all? “When He Found Me” is a wonderfully written inspirational contemporary romance from a longtime favorite author, Victoria Bylin.

This book really knocked me for a loop! It was that fantastic! I don’t know that I can say anything more than what other reviewers have said. This author is known for not shying away from tough subjects and this book is no exception. That doesn’t mean that the average reader should shy away from it because it would be “too much”! On the contrary! I think every teenager in America should read this book, literally! Even though it’s a Christian-based book, I still think every youth or young adult in America could gain valuable insight about consequences and perhaps make better choices before bad things happen that change their whole futures. The characters in this book are wonderful and deal with their consequences from their past in a normal “human” manner but they show how difficult things can be when they made bad choices in their youth & older. I loved the book from start to finish. I would recommend it to anyone! I didn’t want it to end!
Bylin’s raw authenticity gifts readers with genuine and honest characters who encounter realistic struggles and conflict. Faith plays an important role in the story without resorting to a sterile, predictable plot. Many readers are sure to learn something new as I did.
This isn’t a “feel-good warm and fuzzy” read but it is a “you ought to read it because it will help you grow” kind of read or maybe even an “if you’re going through tough stuff, know you aren’t alone” kind of read. Regardless, it’s a story well spent as long as you’re not craving a fluffy escape from reality.
It is my hope that authors continue to write brave stories such as this one and readers continue to read and learn from them. This life we live is messy and by understanding other people’s perspectives and experiences, we can grow more empathetic and be more effective in ministering to one another.

Refuge, Wyoming, a small, close knit town where Shane Riley retreats to heal from an injury that sidelined him from professional baseball, hopefully temporarily. Using a real estate agent, Shane rents a house, sight unseen, for six months while he works at restoring and repairing his injured knee. It is a beautiful home, well taken care of and fully furnished, all he needs is food.
MJ, Melissa June, Townsend is traveling to Refuge, Wyoming with her young son after losing her job and inheriting her grandfathers property; yes, the same place Shane has just signed a contract to lease for six months. Neither MJ or Shane have any knowledge of the other and surprises abound upon meeting each other at the realtors office. After some discussion the two decide that MJ and her son will take the house while Shane rents the over-the-garage apartment.
When MJ’s young son discovers that Shane Riley is “that” Shane Riley, the famous pro ball player, he begs for lessons from the pro. Soon lessons turn to trips to the local park to supper around the family table.
The attraction between Shane and MJ is almost immediate, but each have plans that do not include any romantic entanglements. Shane is determined to get back out on the field, plus he is searching for his sister who he treated wrongfully when they were both young. MJ has her own issues, including a secret that keeps her from ever considering any kind of romantic relationships. Yet, Shane and MJ have something in common, something each are completely unaware…MJ has an interesting tie to Shane’s sister.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by Victoria Bylin and am looking forward to more in the Road to Refuge Series.

Baseball player Shane Riley is on his way to Refuge, Wyoming, to take a teaching job while he recovers from his recent injury. On the way, he meets a woman in a laundromat who reminds him of his estranged sister, Daisy. The woman turns out to be Melissa Townsend, his new landlady.
MJ has nowhere to go. So she’s returned to Refuge with her son, Cody, because she’s recently inherited her grandparent’s house … and because she has nowhere else to go. She wants to sell the house, because her health benefits are about to run out, and she has a condition requiring ongoing healthcare.
When He Found Me is a brave novel that tackles issues not often seen in Christian fiction. MJ has HPV, a sexually transmitted disease contracted in the same one-night stand that gave her Cody. Now she’s staring in the face of a full hysterectomy before she turns twenty-five. No, that whole “it’s your body so you can do what you want” hasn’t exactly worked for her. But MJ has recently become a Christian, and is taking strength in God.
“Preacher Boy” Shane has given up on God since his accident. That presents an interesting and unique dynamic—the new Christian and the new backslider. Both have awkward histories: MJ with her health, and Shane with his sister, Daisy. It’s a strong cast of characters, and a well-plotted novel that covers sexual sin, abuse, and how Christians can inadvertently make things worse.
Recommended for Christian fiction readers who want a novel that deals with some real-life issues but focuses on the emotions and consequences rather than the (sinful) actions.

Shatter the Glass Balls and Set the Seagulls Free!
I wasn’t ready for this book to end! Great character development, I felt like I really got to know MJ inside and out. And Shane, what a special man he is, fighting his own battles, yet able to humble himself and pour out his love to MJ and Cody. Through a series of letters MJ discovers in the attic, she finds a renewed faith which leads to reconciliation with past family issues. And the story of Daisy, Shane’s sister and her abusive relationship, is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching, but you want to keep rooting her on! The author has cleverly woven the alphabet game throughout which creates a fun continuity.
I would highly recommend this enjoyable, yet inspirational novel; I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

This book will grab your attention, you won’t want to put the book down. Shane has an injury that causes him to be unable to play baseball which also results in him distancing himself from God. MJ travels to Wyoming alongside her son Cody to sell her grandfather’s house and use that money for herself and Cody. She has a virus that causes cervical cancer which will change her future. Shane rents MJ’s garage and teaches in the school, MJ’s mother is the principal there. Each character has a struggle which we get to experience through the book.
If you’re looking for a book with real characters who have made real mistakes and struggle with the consequences, sometimes years later, look no further. In When He Found Me, Victoria Bylin delves into the messiness of poor choices, of bad and difficult things happening to good people, and questions about why God doesn’t take those hard things away from his children.
Even though Shane is struggling with his faith, it’s obvious from the first pages that this man has a good heart. MJ is a brand-new Christian learning to lean into God’s strength, but sometimes fear wins that battle and she gets stuck in her own head.
Bravo to Bylin for diving into several issues in this story—lost dreams, consequences of sex before marriage, and domestic abuse are just a few. Like the letters that four women find comfort in for different reasons, this book will speak to different areas to readers, meeting them wherever they are in their lives.
My fingers are crossed that Daisy gets a starring role in the next Road to Refuge book because this is a woman who deserves to be loved well.

There are many sensitive subjects mentioned in When He Found Me and this certainly can’t be labeled as chicklit but it is a story that will touch your heart and remain in your memory. Shane Riley and Melissa June “MJ” Townsend have both suffered deep hurts and they both feel like they have failed. Shane’s successful career as a baseball player has been cut short by an injury, he’s lost touch with his younger sister Daisy and he has basically turned his back on God; MJ is struggling to make ends meet while she raises her son alone, her relationship with her mother is very strained and, to top it all off, MJ knows that she has a virus that could cause her to develop cervical cancer. They are two people in need of a friend but what are the odds that their chance encounter in an laundromat could develop into friendship or that this friendship could deepen into something else?
“MJ” and Shane have a great story to tell but there are actually four points of view shared in When He Found Me. The thoughts of MJ’s mother Olivia and Shane’s sister Daisy are also shown throughout this book and I was especially drawn to Daisy. We learn the hard life that Daisy has experienced and we watch her change; I fully sensed her doubts and I was overjoyed with her conversion.
When He Found Me features faith and hope; estrangement and reconciliation; and many kinds of love. There is romantic love, love of family and love for our fellow man. There is also the reminder that the ultimate, most complete love comes from God and that forgiveness is available for all who seek Him. One of my favorite lines sums it up:
“Father God, you know everything about us, yet you love us just as we are…”
When He Found Me is a beautiful story with wonderful, multifaceted characters, faith and the promise of redemption. As I read it I realized that the title applies to more than just one human finding another! I highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading what Victoria Bylin has for the next book in the Road to Refuge series!
I received a digital copy of this book and I voluntarily chose to share my review.
This is the first time I’ve read a book by this author, and I was impressed by the way she told this story. The characters are wonderful. I had a hard time putting this book down because I was so invested in the lives of Lyn, Daisy, and Shane.
There’s some difficult themes throughout this story, and the author handles each of them in a grace-filled and compassionate way. Lyn, who is single, becomes pregnant and decides to raise her son on her own, even though it means giving up her own dreams. Daisy suffers from an abusive relationship with a boyfriend and finds it hard to break away from him. Shane, who was a rising baseball star, is dealing with what could be a career-ending injury. As their storylines come together, they turn to God to find hope, healing, and forgiveness. If you have suffered from domestic abuse, you may find Daisy’s story unsettling to read. But the scenes are written appropriately and encourage the reader to seek help and also be a source of hope and encouragement.
This a a good contemporary Christian novel, and I’ll look forward to reading more from this author.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
MJ Townsend is reluctantly returning to her hometown. Her car is limping on a wing and a prayer, her pockets are nearly empty, and her welcome is uncertain. Since she has lost her job, it’s imperative that she return to her hometown in order to empty and sell the home her grandfather left her in his will. On her way, she and her son are the recipient of a stranger’s random act of kindness. The random stranger, however, turns out to be not such a random stranger: due to a mix-up in the realtor’s office, he’s her new tenant. Although Shane’s kindness toward her and her son softens her skeptical heart, MJ isn’t only coming back to Refuge with her young son – she’s also carrying the physical and emotional weight of an HPV diagnosis and subsequent complications.
Pro baseball player Shane Riley is planning his comeback from an injury which ended his baseball season and left him bitter and angry toward God. The attractive single mom he helped while traveling to his new temporary home happens to be his new landlord. She also happens to be his new employer’s estranged daughter. Thankfully, they have come to an agreement about his living arrangements while she prepares to sell her grandparents’ home. He can’t deny his growing attraction to MJ and his delight in her young son, but he’s haunted by guilt about his final interaction with his own sister, which drove them apart. And although MJ seems to soften toward him, she continually keeps him at arm’s length. Will he ever be able to find his sister and restore their relationship and finally win MJ’s trust and her heart?
“When He Found Me” was a sweet story. I appreciate that the author attempted to tackle real life issues. Both MJ and Shane are carrying painful and often shame-filled consequences from their past. Many Christian authors avoid this level of realism and brokenness, although it is prevalent in our world. Readers should be aware that the story includes references to content some may find too “PG-13.” I found it refreshing that the author wove the characters’ stories together in a way which highlights the grace and compassion of God. The weaving, however, has some lumps and bumps. Plausibility aside, some of the characters’ struggles are presented in such a clinical manner that I struggled to connect with them. It felt like the book’s themes outpaced its plot, leaving the characters a bit flat. I liked the book, but I didn’t love it.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions contained in this review are my own.
With a setting in small-town Refuge, Wyoming, and engaging, emotionally layered characters, Victoria Bylin courageously tackles some tough subjects in a realistic and compassionate way in her newest book, When He Found Me. I was drawn to MJ and Shane from their first meeting, and enjoyed seeing their connection and relationship grow. Although they both had their own struggles, disappointments, and regrets, I admired the way they were working toward becoming stronger, better individuals. The tender threads of forgiveness, courage, healing, and hope added depth to the story.
This story contains some gritty, hard subjects, but Bylin handles them well. I’ve read several of her stories and have enjoyed them all. I’m looking forward to more books from this author.
When He Found Me is a touching story with real people, their problems and mistakes! Shane is a wonderful protagonist who was a professional baseball player until his knee was injured in a car accident. Shane has lost contact with his sister, Daisy, after he lost his temper the last time he saw her. MJ is almost down to her last dollar when Shane sees her and her young son with his worn out shoes in a laundromat during a road trip. Your heart will go out to this single mother as you admire her determination to make it on her own. They all have regrets in their lives but find there is forgiveness for their mistakes. You will find someone you can relate to in this amazing book by Victoria Bylin. I recommend this contemporary book to everyone! I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
When He Found Me by Victoria Bylin is such an incredible story, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. If it was a movie I’d rate it PG-13 because it has mature themes, frank discussion of adult desires and the main characters’ sexual pasts, and derogatory language in reference to someone’s morals. There are also descriptions of assault that could be a trigger for some readers. All of this makes for a very raw, very realistic story about the ways that we struggle with life choices.
Single mom MJ is struggling to keep her head above water when she moves back to her hometown of Refuge, Wyoming. Through a series of miscommunications she ends up with an injured professional baseball player, Shane Riley, renting the apartment above her garage. I’m a huge fan of meet-cutes, and this one really stood out from the others, tugging at my heartstrings!
Shane Riley is working as a high school teacher, biding his time until he’s healed enough to return to the major leagues. Feeling guilty and jaded, he no longer views himself as a Christian. MJ, on the other hand, has just found her faith in God and is trying hard to make good choices and avoid complications. When they come together the sparks really fly, but both of them are hiding secrets from their pasts that they feel are insurmountable.
As is usually the case in these situations, while I read this story my impatient brain was yelling, “Just tell him/her already!” Books are such great teachers, though. True to life, the characters have their own reasons and their own timing for figuring things out, and the ending is adorably perfect for the story!
One quick note: I’m not very familiar with the medical condition discussed in the book so I can’t tell you if it’s portrayed completely accurately. However, I can tell you that it’s a very sweet story, and I’m excited to read more from Victoria Bylin.
I received a copy of this book from the author and am under no obligation to provide a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Wow, what an incredible story! I was sucked in from the first page and hated to put the book down! This review may be a bit on the short side, simply because I don’t know if I can find the words to do this beautiful book justice. This story is told in alternating POV from the perspectives of MJ, her mother Olivia, Shane, and his sister Daisy, and I was captivated by all of their stories! This book has it all, tremendous depth, a lovely romance, forgiveness, reconciliation, characters that become like friends to the reader, a strong faith story, love, hope, new beginnings, I could go on and on! Words truly cannot express how much I loved this book! Without giving too much away I will just say that this is a book that everyone, especially every woman should read! I can’t recommend When He Found Me highly enough, read it and your life will be impacted for the better! Such a wonderful, amazing read, and I can’t wait for the next novel in the Road to Refuge series!
Note: While there is nothing graphic in this book, the subject matter is very raw and real. For this reason I don’t recommend this one for readers under the age of 16.
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher which did not influence my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
‘Why did people have to hurt? Why did Almighty God make dreams come true and snatch them away?’
Victoria Bylin has written a book that will grab your interest and cause you to become deeply invested in her story. Shane Riley was once a strong Christian. Then an injury to his knee resulted in him not being able to play professional baseball anymore and he drifts so very far away from God. He is trying to find his little sister who was removed from the foster home that sheltered them both. He has talked viciously to her and needs to make it right, but it seems as if she has fallen off the earth.
MJ Townsend is on her way to Refuge, Wyoming with her son Cody to try and sell her grandfather’s house to earn money to keep her and Cody alive. She is also battling a relentless virus that causes cervical cancer, one that has the potential to destroy, if not her life, then all her dreams for the future.
Somehow, these two meet and Shane rents MJ’s garage apartment and begins teaching in the school where MJ’s mother is the principal. Another sore spot of a relationship for her. MJ also soon discovers a link to Shane’s sister.
More than one character in this story is struggling with a life altering problem and deep rooted pain. All have made choices at one time in their life that have caused them to regret their words and actions. These choices have affected their lives in ways they wish were not there, but regret causes these mistakes to take on a life of their own. However, there is one light that can shine through even the darkest of lives and bring back joy to any life. That is Jesus Christ and Bylin has allowed that light to shine brightly in this book. Expect tears to fall and your heart to rejoice when reading this one. And there is at least one more to come! I can’t wait for Daisy’s story. Bravo! Highly recommended.
*I was provided with an early copy of this book by the publisher and author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All the opinions stated here are expressly my own.
In her latest offering, Victoria Bylin takes on two very heavy issues: abortion and STDs. Not the typical stuff found in contemporary Christian romance, but both issues are tastefully handled and point to the fact we all need a savior. Some people may shy away from this book because of the topic, but I really hope most people won’t. Bylin doesn’t glorify the sexual promiscuity of her characters. She shows the real consequences that occur as a result of it. Too many books today glorify sex outside of marriage, where the characters can hop into bed with one person after another and never face any negative consequences. But reality is there are often dire consequences for believing the lie, “It’s my body and I can do what I want with it.” Bylin shows us that side. Ultimately, it is a multi-faceted love story between a man and a woman, between family, between friends, and between God and his creation. Five-stars for a great love story and for tackling the heavy topics.
When He Found Me by Victoria Bylin
A Road to Refuge Novel Book One
Shane Riley feels like he’s failed. He should have been watching over his sister, and he didn’t. Now, he has no idea where she is or what kind of life she’s living. He feels God has failed him and allowed the accident that injured him and knocked him off of the baseball team. Now he’s left LA and is heading to Refuge, Wyoming until he recovers.
Melissa June “MJ” Townsend has made due one day at a time. It’s hard being a single mother, but she can’t imagine life without her son, Cody. She’s heading back home to sell the home her grandfather left to her. Hopefully, the money will help get her on her feet.
This story is incredible. It’s easier sometimes to think God has turned His back on us…but, most likely we don’t like when He says no and it’s our backs that have turned. One poor decision can change our lives completely. There are so many facets to this story. So many wonderful characters. I loved it and look forward to the rest of this series.
