A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest.
Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and … bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he’s restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.
Before it’s over, they’ll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry… and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

Great reading. Loved the ending but was not ready for it. Will recommend it to friends.
What I didn’t like was the book kept going back to the past and what had occurred before.. I didn’t feel any close character identification. The book was a bit slow reading. The most exciting parts were the emergency surgery the Dr, performed
on Emma and Annie The book did have a nice surprise ending which I won’t reveal to our readers.Still I …
It was a beautiful story. Charles Martin is one of my favorite authors
Very good
This is a great book. I loved all the characters. Could not put it down, but hated for it to end. Will read more of Charles Martins books.
Awesome read! I didn’t want it to end!
From the first sentence I was intrigued. I loved the author’s poetic language and the love shared between the characters. Everyone was or became connected in in deep abiding ways. I don’t believe there was a villain other than heart disease. How refreshing to experience a story about the power of love and goodness. My only criticism would be that …
My first time reading Charles Martin, but it put him on my (& my husband’s) Top Authors List. GREAT story!!!
I loved this book. Kept me up late a few nights. Always interesting. I’ll read more of this author.
Martin develops believable characters that have not dealt well with tragedy in the past and who face further trials and possible tragedy in the future. Underlying all this is God’s undying love and forgiveness for even the ungodly ways we choose.
This is a very deep book with complex characters and plot, but I really enjoyed it.
Most interesting account of what a heart transplant Dr. would experience. The faith of the little girl was also inspiring. All the characters were very unique and very interesting. His relationship with his blind brother-In-law was filled with many “words of wisdom”.
Be ready to read all night!
Well written with endearing characters and great facts about the human heart.
Oh my gosh, this book. What a heartachingly beautiful story. The characters are so fleshed out, I feel as if I know them. The writing was just lyrical for me — even in its description of things like rowing, about which I have no interest. I wish it could have just gone on and on, but the story was so satisfying, even in its ending, that I cannot …
I thoroughly enjoy all of Charles Martin’S books. They are very addictive and full of surprise endings.
Love this book and anything Charles Martin has written!
Loved this book
I’d give this book 10 stars if it was an option.
One of the best books I have ever read.
