A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest.
Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and … bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he’s restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.
Before it’s over, they’ll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry… and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

Very good book . Sad but inspirational.
This is my favorite book by Charles Martin, although I’ve not had a chance to read them all yet. I love his style of writing, and somehow after the characters have their struggles, I’m left with a sense of hope. Hard things happen in life, Charles Martin finds a way to get through them.
I absolutely loved this book. Wonderful characters. Story pulled me in. I was so sorry to get to the last page.
The author has a way with words and just has a way of surprising you in the end. I have read all of his books and highly recommend them.
Charles Martin is becoming one of my favorite writers. I love his character development, the pictures he paints using words and the stories I have read thus far. He’s truly a masterful storyteller and I look forward to another one of his books! I have recommended him to many.
From the first page Martin draws his readers into the hearts and minds of some very real characters. He is a gifted writer who can take you to the corners of your soul that need to be stirred up.
One of the best books I have ever read
Good book
One of my absolute favorites.
Loved this book, really good read!
I can’t say enough about this book. It evokes a wide range of feelings with characters that are so real you feel like you know them.
Ilike his characters. You get involved in the story and really care what happens to them and want to know why they feel the way they do. You want the best for them.
I love the way this author uses words to paint pictures . I like to learn something new with each book I read and I know this author always delivers. His characters are well developed. Language is uplifting with spiritual overtones. I give it 5 stars.
Depth of emotions in this book is something I have not experienced in fiction. Might be reading wrong genre. Forced myself to breathe in final chapter. Have recommended the book to friends who love and enjoy Clayton/Lake Burton area.
I’ve read every book Charles Martin has written. This is a good one to start with, but they’re all good!
Charles Martin is my new favorite author! I love anything written by him!
Really different, in a good way
Tender, beautifully written and the right mix of unique but believable characters and direction twists. Masterfully researched and composed. My first Charlie Martin book but there will definitely be more added to my Kindle.
