A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest.
Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and … bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he’s restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.
Before it’s over, they’ll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry… and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

I’ve read all of the Charles Martin books and highly recommend them! I am always waiting for his next book release!
This story held a special appeal for me because my daughter is on the heart transplant list. I was fascinated with the author’s research and apparent knowledge of this subject and the body’s response to issues involving the heart.
I was also lifted by his obvious nod to the power of love and faith in our lives and in the healing process.
Loved it At times confusing going back and forth on time. It’s difficult to explain but was hard to follow at times as what was real and what was in his mind but such an emotionally packed story.
I loved this book. Charles Martin always grabs you with his storylines and his characters, it makes it hard to put his books down. I’ve had open heart surgery so this book was particularly interesting to me. Excellent!
My favorite Christian fiction this year. My favorite novel by Martin
I loved this book. It was an easy read that I did not want to put down.
Very different from the first book of his I read, but still an awesome book.
This book was so gripping. Martin’s writing brings about a visceral response that is rare. I thought about these characters for days (weeks!) after reading the last page.
Wonderful book
Once I read this book, I knew I had to read everything Charles Martin had written. Now I pre-order all of his book and wait impatiently for each new book. He never, ever disappoints.
Charles Martin has become one of my favorite authors!
I have a new favorite author. This book was so so good!!!! Must read!!
Unpredictable at first but some of the story towards the end is a surprise
Good character development
Keeps one engaged in reading it
Used by 2 book clubs I know

I am currently reading this book. I love a good, southern read about the human condition and redemption. The characters unfold beautifully and the storyline is intriguing. I am only 1/4 way through the book and just loving. If you are a fan of Eudora Welty, Anne Tyler, Anne Rivers Siddons, and writers within this genre, you will love “When …
A sad and sweet story about second chances.
A wonderful book!!! Realist, emotional, captivating… I fell in love with every character, I laughed, I cried, I grieved. I could not. put down. I will read it again when I have had time to heal
Loved this book. Great relationships. Kindness, caring, helping and also human suffering and fear. I felt like I really “knew” the characters.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I felt I was right there with the doctor, as he was trying his best to be the best to save his wife. Did not expect the little girl in the yellow dress to get to be as she did. And the Doctor – and his love and desire to help people with heart problems. Read it for yourself to find out the …
One of the best books I’ve read in awhile.
I really like Charles Martin’s books. Always takes awhile to get into the storyline, but once I do, I find it difficult to put them down. This is the 3rd book of his I have read, and I am looking forward to more. He is a wonderful Christian author.
