A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest.
Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and … bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he’s restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.
Before it’s over, they’ll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry… and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

I read a lot–I mean a lot, since I both write books and teach college English. This book was the best I’ve read in quite some time. One of the things I liked most about it was how Charles Martin wove a deep thread of faith throughout the story. I laughed and cried and didn’t want it to end. Well done, and I highly recommend.
This is a book about the heart in so many ways. I am now a huge fan of Charles Martin and his spectacular storytelling. If you love getting sucked into a book and having it stay with you long after you put it down, this one is for you. The characters he creates are realistic and flawed, but also sympathetic and endearing: when they hurt, you hurt; …
Any book by Charles Martin is worth your time
This is an excellent read – very original and thought-provoking.
A very heart-wrenching story written as only Charles Martin could do. Very believable characters exhibiting love in ways we all long for. There is no other author that I know of who draws me in like Charles Martin. When Crickets Cry is one of his best.
A heartwarming story of life and death and how to really live in between those moments. I loved this story and highly recommend it.
One of the reasons you read a Charles Martin novel is because his prose reads like poetry. His stories follow a typical pattern, but his mastery of the language and his research are impeccable. He is one writer who entices me to do what I did as a kid, keep reading long after I was supposed to turn off the lights. A true delight.
Martin always keeps you in suspense, feeding you little bits of the past that explains the present.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Charles Martin story revolving around the heart … the physical heart and the spiritual heart. It was quite obvious through the descriptions of heart surgery and the details of a heart transplant, the author did in-depth research, which I appreciate. His writing is poetic and drew me into the story and held my attention …
If you love 3-dimensional characters, a story that resonates, delightful word-smithing, and a read you do not wish to put down, then Charles Martin’s “When Crickets Cry” will flow into your heart and stay there.
An excellent book. So glad I was introduced to Charles Martin in another author’s newsletter. Not the last book I’ll read by this author. A well written story, great characters, vivid setting descriptions, interesting insights into several topics. Heart warming and wrenching. Some areas of the book may not be exactly how things actually work, but …
I’ve read several books by Charles Martin and have never been disappointed
Good, but heart wrenching.
awesome
I am so grateful my friend introduced me to Charles Martin’s writing. I have read or listened to five of his books so far and he’s become one of my favorite authors. Just finished When Crickets Cry last night. I could hardly wait for my reading time with this story each day. If the characters were real, I’d love to spend time with each of them. Oh …
I’m a proud soft-hearted retired physician and this book had tears rolling down my cheeks. I read any Charles Martin book I can get my hands on and this is one of my favorites…but just barely. I haven’t read one of his books that I haven’t loved. What a gift his words, faith and wisdom has brought a suffering world. His words will heal…if …
Another great read from Charles Martin.
I very rarely read a book twice but this one was such a good read I did! Highly recommend this book and author.
I love all Charles Martin books!
This was my introduction to Charles Martin and his gifted books. His insight and story telling ability is supreme.
