If the answer is a lie…the truth is murderJournalist Emmeline Kirby is reeling from the recent discovery that her parents were murdered while on assignment, when she was five. She flirts with danger as she sets off on the long-cold trail to find their killer. At the same time, her probing questions about the suspicious death of Russian national Pavel Melnikov gain her a coterie of enemies. To … of enemies. To complicate matters, her path crosses with prominent industrialist Victor Royce, who turns her world upside down.
Gregory Longdon, her dashing fiancé and jewel-thief-cum-insurance-investigator, has grave problems of his own. His past has caught up with him. Alastair Swanbeck, a ruthless entrepreneur with ties to Putin and the underworld, is alive and intent on revenge. Swanbeck’s cat-and-mouse taunts reveal that he can get to Gregory–and Emmeline–anytime he desires. When evil’s poison lurks in things that are better left alone, the quest for justice could prove fatal for Emmeline and Gregory.

with the present effortlessly. This was the first
book in the series that I have read but look
forward to reading the others.
A Highly Recommended Read!!!
I volunteered to read When Blood Runs Cold.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity. My
opinion is voluntary and my own.
Daniella Bernett’s latest Emmeline Kirby/Gregory Longdon mystery, When Blood Runs Cold, is like reading Anne Perry, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy L. Sayers all rolled into one.
The story is set in modern times London, where Emmeline Kirby, an investigative journalist, now editorial director for The Clarion, had learned that her parents’ death that happened when she was five-years-old was the result of murder. She’s determined to find out who was responsible and bring them to justice, but before she begins her probe, she has to attend to her assignment—a new series on influential men and women in British society who overcame their humble beginnings. When Emmeline steps into the home of Victor Royce, founder of Royce Global Holdings, to hear his story, dominos start to fall and troubling coincidences can’t be ignored. Before Emmeline can make sense of what is happening, she stumbles onto a quagmire of corruption, collusion, and conspiracy. Soon a series of murders occur; all point to Emmeline as the prime suspect.
To make matters worse, her fiancé, Gregory Longdon, a one-time jewel thief turned insurance investigator, is involved in another side of the investigation. He brings to light Alastair Swanbeck, a cunning businessman with ties to Royce Global Holdings, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, and what he wants is Emmeline and Gregory out of the way. The couple joins forces to bring down Swanbeck, who is a step ahead at every turn. The conclusion will have you chomping at the bit for the next Kirby/Longdon mystery.
Bernett’s story will indeed make “your blood run cold.” Make sure you set aside a good amount of time to read because once you start, you will not put the book down until the end.
This mystery is full of action, clever dialogue, and fun characters, especially the petite, but stalwart, Emmeline Kirby, and the dashing and urbane Gregory Longdon. The London setting adds a certain flair, as well. I devoured the book in a couple of sittings, and now I’m marveling at the author’s elaborate imagination. Well done!
When Blood Runs Cold, an Emmeline Kirby and Gregory Longdon Mystery, By Daniella Bernett, is just as adventurous as book one in her series! Emmeline’s world is tossed upside down from page one, and a bitter need to find justice has her searching out the old friends who can help her. Superintendent Burnell plays a lead role in the investigations, as she works her way through the mystery of her parents’ murder, Russian espionage and other loose ends that turn up in the story. Sergeant Finch, Gregory and Phillip Acheson of the Foreign Office are all there to help put the pieces of the puzzle together, but things run away from her as she checks out a lead on a new story. Investigating the background of a prominent businessman, Victor Royce, for her latest article, she discovers a lot more than the inner workings of his business. In all the threads unraveling, Gregory’s longtime nemesis, Swanbeck, has come back to even the playing field and more than just Gregory’s life is on the line. Royce shares a common interest in bringing Swanbeck to justice, and the grand scheme to undermine Swanbeck just might be the end to a very intense game. Gregory’s new position with an insurance agency brings old assets back into play. Could Emmeline be engaged to a thief once more? Burnell is never thrilled to see Gregory’s handsome face, but the superintendent will have to endure the annoyance for Emmeline’s and all their sakes.
