Brook Fowler’s life is out of control. In a matter of days, she has lost her grandfather, her boyfriend and her job. Needless to say, she is a mess. If that wasn’t enough, she has just been pulled over for speeding by non-other than New York State Trooper Tristan Reid. And so the story begins…
There is a lot going on in this story and at times you may have to stop for a deep breath, but stay with it and be prepared for secrets, hidden agendas and revelations! ; ) … and plenty of action.
If you are like me, you may want to take a visit to Lake George, NY! 😉

Mystery, suspense and a deep intense connection between two strangers make up the next story in the New York State Trooper series.
Tristan knew about Brooke before Brooke knew about him. Brooke’s grandfather befriends Tristan and thought they would be a perfect match. But, instead of a planned dinner for introductions, Brooke meets Tristan when she returns to take care of her grandfather’s funeral which, occurs after a devasting week of losing her boyfriend, her job and possibly her sanity. Unfortunately, the bad luck continues as soon as Brooke arrives at her grandfather’s house. Her whole world gets turned upside down with break-ins, lawsuits, and a threat on her life. And, through it all, Tristan is there by her side lending support and comfort. He is so charming and adorable in his blunt, awkward way that Brooke finds him irresistible especially, since they apparently share some deep connection that is unexplainable.
This is a really engrossing story that keeps you wondering how many things could go wrong for Brooke and will justice ever be served. I thoroughly enjoy reading Tristan and Brooke’s story. However, I was a bit disappointed in the ending. I thought it was too abrupt and underwhelming considering the intense drama at the end. Without trying to give anything away, I was confused on Wendell III’s reaction to Brooke being at her grandfather’s. If he did not know Brooke’s family secret, why was he so bent on destroying Brooke’s life? And, in the process of ruining his own?
Brooke Fowler just lost her beloved grandfather, leaving her devastated. He was the only family she had left. Even though she talked to him every week, it was never enough. She will never forgive herself for cancelling her last visit with him in order to spend time with her now, ex-boyfriend, who turned out to be a big jerk. She arrives in Lake George to plan her grandfather’s funeral, take care of his house, and to decide what to do with the rest of her life. Brooke notices a business card stuck haphazardly on her late grandmother’s bulletin board. Why did her grandfather leave this for her? Was this someone her grandfather trusted to help her after he was gone? She had to find out, so she picked up the phone.
Tristan Reid loves his job as a sergeant with the New York State Police, based in Lake George. He strongly believes in improving the quality of life in his community and making people feel better about where they live. He treats everyone the same and is always aware of what is going on around him He, too, has experienced a terrible and very personal loss in his life and coming to terms with it has made him more compassionate. He thought about the young woman he pulled over at the end of his shift. She had been crying and seemed deeply troubled. He was able to calm her down and only gave her a warning. He knew who she was and why she was so upset. He needed to reach out to her and tell her how much her grandfather meant to him. He was tired after a long shift, so he decided to get in touch with her tomorrow. Then his phone rang and it was an unfamiliar number. He almost ignored the call, but picked it up and said hello.
“When a Stranger Calls” is the final book in the New York State Trooper Series, which I highly recommend. I loved this book and I feel that Jen has captured the emotions of Brooke and Tristan so perfectly, that you want their story to go on forever. I am sorry to see this series end, but I am looking forward to Jen’s new series, Adirondack Heat.
