A need to belong drives her. A longing to forget compels him. Fate may send them into each other’s arms, but only love can mend their hearts. An Outlander Raised by a tyrannical father, Marion de Lacy yearns for the comfort of belonging to a loving family. So when her father announces her betrothal to an evil knight in exchange for his help to overthrow the king, she concocts a desperate scheme … desperate scheme to avoid the marriage: feigning her own death and then fleeing England. But when her plan goes terribly awry and she’s captured by the knight, not even her careful preparations could ready her for the Scottish barbarian who rescues her and then informs her that he’s to marry her by edict of her king. Certain her father will defy the king’s orders and wed her to the knight if she refuses the Highlander’s hand, Marion agrees to marry the strangely compelling but obstinate laird of the MacLeod clan.
A Highlander
After the death of his beloved wife, Iain MacLeod has no desire to marry ever again. Yet when he finds himself obliged to do so to secure the freedom of his childhood friend and king, he reluctantly travels across England to collect his unwanted bride, expecting to find a cold Englishwoman. Instead, he discovers a fiery, bold beauty who is fiercely loyal, protective of those she loves, and defies him at every turn, challenging his certainty that his heart is dead.
Ensnared
Following a hasty marriage and perilous journey to Scotland, Marion harbors no illusions that her new husband loves her. Still, her heart cannot resist the noble, brave warrior, and she cannot suppress the hope that she has finally found where she belongs. However, the harder she tries to fit in with the clan and gain Iain’s love, the farther away her dreams drift. Iain is more than willing to give his respect to his courageous wife—her kisses and caresses even ignite his blood and demand his passion—but he refuses to give up his heart. That is, until enemies near and far threaten to take Marion from him. Now the demons that haunt him can only be conquered by surrendering body and soul to Marion, if only it’s not too late…
“WHEN A LAIRD LOVES A LADY by Julie Johnstone is the first book in the Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts series, and I cannot wait for the second instalment. With beautiful imagery, the author transports the reader to a whole new world. Both Marion and Iain are meaningful and emotional characters, who I became deeply invested in. I could not put this book down. With plenty of danger, excitement and passionate encounters, WHEN A LAIRD LOVES A LADY by Julie Johnstone has got it all, and I now have a new favourite author.” ~ Fresh Fiction

When a Laird Loves a Lady by Julie Johnstone
Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts Series Book One
Marion de Lacy just wants to be loved. Her father never loved her and now he wants to marry her off to a cruel knight. Never. She’d rather die…or maybe pretend she’s dead so she can escape. Her plans didn’t quite go as planned since King Edward had another idea for her life.
Laird Iain MacLeod had been married once and that was enough for him. Loving his wife and losing her was too much grief to bear. And now that he finds himself having to marry again…he decides to keep his heart to himself. He may not give his heart but he doesn’t mind giving his new wife his body.
I enjoy the medieval era setting that this series takes place in. Some great twists and turns add to the story. Both of their pasts add to who they are; Marion wanting love and Iain feeling guilty. There are so many wonderful secondary characters that I’m really looking forward to this series.

Julie Johnstone has done it again with When a Laird Loves a Lady! The moment I opened this book, I was sucked into another time. Loveable characters, tantalizing plot twists, and a happily ever after! Recommend!
When A Laird Loves A Lady, by Julie Johnstone. I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the action scenes that played out. These parts of the story are well described in most of the scenes. These sections of the stories definitely held my attention.
They also helped keep the pace of the story moving. I found the action scenes very entertaining. The drama was great. The intensity of battles, betrayals and abuse from Marion’s father had me crying out to her to take her father out. Not all parts of the story are dramatic and that intense. There are some humorous sections to the book that brought whimsical moments to the story.
I think these moments helped smooth out some of the light hearted times of the story. The plot of the story and the drama brought the intensity of the story to the readers imagination. The romance between Marion and Iain was so sweet and beautiful. It’s what helped weave the love story between the two from the beginning to the end. The intimate love scenes are steamy and are just a little naughty.
I think this book should be written for a Saturday night made for TV movie. That’s how good this book is. Keep the Scottish brogue. I liked that the writer used the dialect correctly. I strongly recommend this book to my fellow readers. Until next time… read on!
I was swept away and captivated for hours by Ian and Marion’s tumultuous and timeless love story. Using the backdrop of Scotland’s King David II’s imprisonment in England, there was plenty of nerve tingling action, betrayal, intrigue, mixed with sensual passion and saucy dialogue. When A Laird Loves A Lady hooked me at page one and held me spellbound until the very last page.
My first Julie Johnstone book and I loved it. Great story telling and loved the characters, although the hero was a bit unrealistically obstinate. Good story – felt like I was there! I like to read about women with skills.
I LIKED THE CHARACTERS VERY MUCH AND i HATED TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN UNTIL I FINISHED IT, WELL WRITTEN AND TITILLATING.
I really liked the heroine and that our hero appreciated her and loved her
A sexy highlander and a strong willed English woman. Of course it’s going to be fun!
Larger than life hero meets strong, determined damsel in distress.
Enjoyed it so much – will be seeking the rest of the series. Thank you.
I love this entire series.
Love it! Great mixture of characters married with drama.
Many authors have tried to ride on the coat tails on Diana Gabaldon but Julie Johnstone actually does a good job of it. If you love Outlander….and the season just ended 🙁 so you need a Highlander fix, this is it.
Off to read the next book in the series…
I could not put it down. Both characters were compelling. Loved it from beginning to end.
Amazing
I enjoyed it. Hated it to end.
Great story and characters!
Very similar to Outlander
One of my favorite books. Have read it a couple of times.
I’ve read this book twice. It’s really good. This story is filled with intense emotions, strong characters (even the villians), and wild adventures. Marion impressed me with her courage and her perseverance. Iain impressed me by being brave enough to show kindness. In a world of arranged and forced marriage, kindness and honesty forge a new route to love and happiness. This is one of the most exciting romance stories I have read. I couldn’t make it last more than two days. Loved it.
