Uncovering The Original Sin
Whatever Became of Sin?, by B. Roman, has one of the most contorted plots I have read in a long time. I found the action unpredictable. It’s difficult to focus on a story when I know where it’s headed, and I had no idea where this one was going. There were little clues dropped along the way that moved the story along, but never led where I thought they may go. That made it a page-turner for me.
The story presents a great view of New Orleans and her culture, both in the recent past and the present. Without presenting a spoiler, it’s one man’s reaction when he learns a secret about his daughter. The truths he uncovers and the unscrupulous people hiding information lead him through the most heart-breaking experience of his lifetime.
The plot is twisted and contains many shocking truths. At times, though fiction, this could be true of someone’s life today.
The character of Harvard educated attorney Michael Warren, returns to a town that fills him with horrid memories, where he faces the most lecherous, evil men willing to do anything for profit. This is the unexpected bottom-feeding political underbelly of the otherwise happy town of New Orleans, Louisiana. A place that at one time, had an upscale housing development where he once lived with his wife Elaine and young daughter, Dominique. This time, Michael meets the beautiful temptress, Dr. Celia Stone who is smart, seductive and not as honest as she appears.
Near the very end of the book, the riverboat captain asks Michael what it will serve for him to re-open Pandora’s Box, but by this time, it’s too late. The box filled with treachery has spilled openly out into the Mississippi in “a plot so heinous that the devil would most certainly warm up a special place in Hell for him,” referring to Hardin Westwick, a ruthless developer who pays off the right men to get his way. Roman’s book however contains so much more than just a juicy scandal. Filled with sex, betrayal and the shameful racist behavior that makes mature men talk passionately about their pure bloodlines and how to maintain them, even resorting to calculated, perverse plans that include murder. The author uses names and phrases familiar to life in the South, to pull you into a Bayou shack, even cleverly displaying the colors, sights and sounds, even the smell of cooking to make you feel you are closing in on danger. There are so many intriguing moments that will have you turning pages faster to find out what happens, not to mention, there are shocking and unexpected surprises. If you like captivating and exciting stories, you’ll love Whatever Became of Sin?
I loved the twists and turns in this mystery thriller. The author takes readers into an unusual story of sin and heart-touching drama as they follow Michael Warren. Although Michael is an environmental lobbyist, the man has a lot more in his life to deal with. The author uses vivid descriptions and a great storyline to bring this tale to life in an intriguing way that makes this book hard to put down. well done!
A convoluted tale of corruption, hidden identities, baby switching, indirect murder, murder by design, insanity, and racism that carries on through the years. One man keep’s confessing to a Catholic priest, but not the authorities. When Michael and Elaine’s daughter contacts cancer and dies from a swimming area that her grandfather created, Michael vows revenge as his wife slips from depression into madness, but like everything else in this tale, is she truly mad? Michael is on to bribery in high places, but once again his father-in-law’s money prevails. Then a man is murdered on a plane when it was Michael who was targeted, but by who? How much help is the District Attorney, and what is Doctor Cecilia Stone hiding? Michael discovers that his baby was switched at birth. His own daughter may or may not be alive, but where? Then due to an error the sniper shoots Dr. Stone instead of Michael, and the search intensifies. Will Michael’s father-in-law be brought to justice? Will the District Attorney face what deceit he has helped perpetuate, and will the little girl lost be reunited with her parents. Superb story telling.
I thought this book was going to be a spiritual book but instead it was a fiction book that kept me turning the pages. I thought I knew who had done what early in the book but it was much more intriguing than that. The author did a great job of giving clues while also leaving you asking more questions about eager to figure out the mystery. I love the New Orleans backdrop with the Cajun influence. A great read! I enjoyed it and give it 5 stars!
