Dash it to ribbons! Fool, Ninny, Goose Cap! I so look forward to new stories by Collette Cameron! She always has a new word or saying I adore! Oh yes cherie, What Would A Duke Do to get revenge for a long ago misdeed against his grandfather. Marry his grandaughter? What would he do when he found himself longing to kiss her or finding her hiding in the woods, scared when her coach broke down! “Even rumpled, frazzled, her hem soiled, and dirt clinging to her gown, in the fading light she was a radiant jewel. a forest nymph: mysterious and untamed and utterly bewitching.” Max was internally waging a war with himself over his attraction to Gabriella, the grandaughter of the man he wanted to ruin and get back the estate he had taken from his grandfather years ago.
Gabriella had long been having feelings for Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington until she overheard him disparaging her grandfather for how he had ruined his family and now Max was bent on revenge. But when he turns his attention on her, she is determined to keep him at arms length. Oh yes with his shock of midnight hair and unusual eyes, one blue and one green, a granite jaw and slashing blade of a nose. Yep I could see it was not going to be easy!
Seriously when I started the first page I knew I was not going to be able to put it down until the end. Thus is my life when I pick up a book of this wonderful author’s!
A story of a misguided revenge, a truth that would eventually come out and a handsome man, okay outstanding!, attracted to a beautiful girl and she to him. Much more to it than that but I truly loved these two characters that came alive in my imagination, who I will be thinking about for awhile. So what will a duke do in the end? Trust me, you want to find out!!
Maxwell/Pennington- Powerful duke out for revenge
Gabriella- strong and feisty female who does what’s right for her family.
I enjoyed reading this captivating story that is fantastically written with a twist/”surprise”, some drama, lies, love/romance (of course), witty dialogue and proof that vengeance is a terrible web woven through generations if one lets it. Their story has loving HEA!
I received an ARC of this must-read
Collette Cameron is one of my go-to, auto buy authors. She is an amazing storyteller! What Would a Duke Do is a wonderful enemies to lover’s story. It has vengeance, family secrets, betrayal, blackmail, forgiveness, and so much more. My words just can’t do it justice.I definitely recommend.
When Gabriella Breckensole meets the Duke of Pennington at a holiday house party, she is immediately enamored of him and thrilled that he is paying her marked attention. Then she hears him vow revenge against her grandfather. She is heartbroken and now wants nothing to do with him. What she doesn’t know is that she is to be a pawn in his scheme. Max eventually reveals his reason for revenge to her, and his plan to use marriage to her as part of it. What a mess! Why does Max seek revenge against her grandfather? Can he really use Gabby as a pawn in his plot? Does he know the whole story?
This wonderful story is full secrets, misunderstandings, and the heartbreak they can cause. As the story unfolds it becomes one of discovery, healing, and acceptance. I love Max and Gabby. If they can work everything out, they will be perfect with each other. All of the characters in this one are compelling. All of them have felt the pain of betrayal, and only they can help each other heal. The best thing about having to climb a mountain is that you eventually get to the top. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it, especially when it begins with “I could love you.” This is a hold-your-breath romance and a great read. I highly recommend it.
This was a fun, jammed packed book with all the things I love; scandal, witty bantering between H/h, lies, romance, feisty/strong heroine & a handsome/endearing hero. They will bicker & disagree several times before they finally reach their HEA.
Maxwell Woolbright, Duke of Pennington has been a secret love for Gabriella Breckensole until she discovers his plan to ruin her grandfather. She wants nothing to do with him now & ignores him completely but he doesn’t even realize it is happening.
Maxwell found her grandfather’s diary & he believes Gabriella’s grandfather had managed to purloin his grandparent’s family home by cheating his grandfather & Maxwell felt the stress of the loss eventually caused the death of his grandfather & father.
Maxwell has a plan – marry Gabriella & ask for the family home to be returned to the duchy in place of her dowry & her grandparents can continue to live there. His blackmail leaves Gabriella no choice other than agreeing to the marriage but she is not happy. She informs her grandparents Maxwell’s plans & they divulge the truth of the matter – she now has her own ammunition to use against Maxwell or will she? Read the book & find out what she does – it is a really entertaining story with great characters!
I was gifted this ARC & have voluntarily read, reviewed & recommended it!
What Would A Duke Do is book 4 in the Seductive Scoundrel’s series by Collette Cameron. I really enjoyed this book. This is one of my favorite romance tropes – enemies to lovers. Cameron paints a delightful picture adding humor in splashes here and there. I enjoyed Maxwell the Duke of Pennington’s character. He is funny and droll at times in his verbal sword playing with the heroine Gabriella. “How could she ever have thought the Duke of Pennington amusing or charming? Enthralling. Fascinating. Wholly extraordinary. His black lashed eyes were quite extraordinary. Never before had she seen anyone with two different colored eyes. They enhanced the air of mystery surrounding him. As if he were privy to a secret no one else knew. She’d seen it in the way he observed her through his heavy lidded smoldering eyes.” Gabriella is fiercely loyal to her family but finds herself inextricably drawn to her enemy the Duke. Loved it!!! I was gifted a copy of this book.
This book will enthrall you from the beginning. So much passion and vengeance for a past injustice. There are two sides to a story so when Gabby and Max see the whole picture hopefully it won’t be too late for them to have a happy ending.
Collete Cameron can write a truly romantic book that grabs your imagination. This book was a fairy tale in a way. So many secrets and lies. Misunderstandings and deceit. I was biting my nails to the end. I’m so looking forward to the next.
Collette Cameron does it again!!! What Would a Duke Do is book 4 in the Seductive Scoundrels series. Though in a series this story can be read as a stand alone. This is one of Collettes darker regencies and the enemy to lover story is quite the battle. There are so many past dark secrets that it hits you by surprise as each one is revealed. Collette is one of the best writers of our time and I just love anything she has written. She never disappoints. This original story is not only a “can’t put this book down” but is truly creative. This story has a family’s love, dark secrets, great banter, eavesdropping, devotion, an accident, revenge, seduction, rescue, unwanted feelings, confusion and love. I highly recommend this book as you won’t be disappointed.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Gabriella Breckensole’s secret crush on Maxwell Woolbright, the eighth Duke of Pennington dies a swift death when she overhears him vowing to ruin her grandfather. From that moment on, Gabriella has avoided the duke whenever possible and has kept the knowledge of what she heard to herself. But unfortunately for her, Maxwell doesn’t seem to take the hint…
After finding his grandfather’s journal, Maxwell believes that Gabriella’s grandfather stole his grandmother’s family home from the duchy by cheating his grandfather, furthermore, he believes this act caused the demise of his grandfather and father. He wants vengeance and has come up with the perfect solution – at least perfect in his mind! He will marry the delightful Gabriella Breckensole and make her grandfather give him Hartfordshire Court as her dowry, in exchange, he will let them live there, that way everybody is happy and the estate is returned to the duchy, all he has to do is convince Gabriella that his way is the right way…
Gabriella cannot believe the gall of Maxwell, how dare he demand that she marry him and then threaten her with her grandparents with complete ruin if she doesn’t? Left with no choice, she agrees, but vows to make him live to regret his highhandedness! When she tells her grandparents of Maxwell’s plan, she learns the awful truth and is given the means to turn the tables on Maxwell, will she take the information and enact vengeance on the man that she once believed she could love? Or will Maxwell realize that Hartfordshire Court isn’t worth the price it will cost him to regain it…Gabriella’s love.
This was a well written, fast paced story with two very strong leads, who will lock horns several times before finding their HEA. The book has scandal, vengeance, secrets, lies, some amusing banter, a likeable albeit misguided hero, a very stubborn feisty heroine, warmish love scenes and very hard won HEA.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me*
3.5 stars rounded up.
Miss Gabriella Breckensole is rather enamored of Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington, even if he is quite far above her station. Too bad he’s bent on having his revenge against her grandfather by taking her family home from her and returning it to the duke’s properties. Maxwell will have his revenge no matter what, even if it means he marries the wild and unpredictable granddaughter of his enemy and even if she doesn’t want to marry him.
Gabriella fights an attraction she knows she shouldn’t feel for the duke and hides her knowledge of his plans. Her grandfather acquired their home in a fair sale and she won’t allow him to be harmed if she can possibly help it.
Max fights his attraction to Gabby as well. He’ll make her his bride with Hartfordshire Court as her dowry one way or another, but he won’t let his heart or emotions be involved. Event though he doesn’t believe Gabby knows of her grandfather’s perfidy, Max still holds him to blame for the downfall of his own grandfather and ultimately that of his father and grandmother as well.
Gabriella is determined to foil Max’s plans and he’s just as determined to see them through. His revelations cause Gabby to question everything she knows about her family but things are never as they seem and soon Max longs for the time before he learned of their grandfathers’ history. Having never experienced love, Max can’t bring himself to give up on the revenge that is now driving him, but his insistence on focusing on the past may well ruin any hope he has of a happy future.
This enemies to lovers story is odd because the revenge is truly being enacted on an innocent party, but that made the story line unique and once all the secrets started coming out it really held my attention.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Delightful Story of Love, Trust & Forgiveness.
Although I do enjoy reading Collette Cameron’s Books, this Story was Good, but not Great.
It started out slow & was a bit repetitive & tedious.
It did get better. There is a twist in the Story which surprised me.
Max and Gabriella, love affair is a sweet romantic story. For those readers who enjoys clean romance, this is the book to read. The book reads with just a simple story that grows between two people. I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.
Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington, is a man focused on revenge. He will stop at nothing to achieve his goal, including the marrying the beautiful, unpredictable granddaughter of the man from whom he seeks reprisal. Gabriella is astonished when the Duke turns his romantic attentions on her. Debonair and confident, he set her heart fluttering from their first meeting. Max will have to make the impossible choice between retribution and forever losing the only woman to ever touch his heart. – I enjoyed the banter between Maxwell and Gabriella. The author made their chemistry noticeable. They were both kind and deserving of happiness. The twists made the tory more interesting. This is a good read.
I felt this book was too contrived and the back story difficult to believe. As much as stories of this time period stress the effects of rumors, it was unrealistic that neither main character seemed affected by what would have been a huge scandal.
If you have read the first few books in this series, you have a fair idea of what you are getting into. These books tend to be very short and have a lot of inner monologuing by the main characters- especially in proportion to the overall length of the book.
I like that there wasn’t a dragged out misunderstanding between the H and h. The H was honest about his plans and quickly regretted his actions. Interactions were very honest, just not a lot of “heat” between the two. I would recommend this book however and plan to read more by this author.
There were lots of twists and turns to the story and you were never sure if the hero and heroine we’re going to get together or not.
More of a 3.5. I found the history of the animosity between the two families the most interesting part of the book and it tied everything together.
I do enjoy books by this author and this one was no exception. Loved that it had scandal, witty dialogue, romance, The H seeks revenge on behalf of his family against the h’s grandfather. There is a surprise twist that is creative and changes the opinion of the H. The HEA is sweet.
