An original time-slip novel set in early 20th century Ireland with a gigantic plot mystery that kept me turning the pages.
A fictional story blended with real-life, historical events in1920s Ireland. The story is woven with threads of history and romance across two totally different eras, What the Wind Knows is a pleasure for the senses and an unforgettable, remarkable read.
After a few chapters this book grabbed me and never let go. It is one of those rare novels that you don’t want to put down. If you enjoy unusual and interesting stories, this one is for you.
Oh. My. I adored this story! So delightfully Irish. Bittersweet and deeply satisfying. Time travel is tricky and weaving in all that history has the potential to bog a story down but Harmon handled it all with a deft hand. Utterly lovely and sweetly Romantic. Plus, I’ve always enjoyed Yeats and it was sneaky of the author not to quote his poem The Second Coming.
This was my first Amy Harmon read and I am actually finding it hard to write this review. Overall, WHAT THE WIND KNOWS was a beautiful love story but I psyched myself out at the start
and it took me forever to finish it. It had been so long since I read the blurb that I forgot it was a time travel novel. I appreciated the author’s note and all the research that
went into the book. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of her books in different genres.
What a wonderful time travel book! I borrowed this with Kindle Unlimited and got to listen for free!
I loved learning about the Irish history and I really enjoyed the format of the book with the poetry, journals and the two narrators! The ending was perfect and I’m so happy with this book. This was a new author and I took a gamble not knowing the spice level! It was all sweet in my definition with cuddles and kissing but more desire without discussion of more than touching. PG would be another description. It was a unique book and I loved the fact that it was audio as well as available on KU!
I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read from Amy Harmon and this book was no different. I don’t typically read historical romance, but this wasn’t just historical romance. It was so much more. I loved how she wove facts and history effortlessly with fiction and magic. She’s also a master at writing very sensual scenes without being overly explicit. It’s a classy kind of sexy. I also learned a lot about Ireland’s history. All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who reads romance.
Lovely time travel to 1920’s Ireland. I really enjoyed the depth and richness of historical detail.
” Freedom is the ability to go wherever your heart calls. ”
What the Wind Knows is a story that will stay with you long after finishing this book. I read the story some time ago and it stubbornly stays in my head and don’t want to leave, and I love it. Amy Harmon I bow to you. You wrote a magnifient story, a book that touched me deeply, a gut- wrenching heartfelt emotional read that had me in tears more than one time.
Meet Anne Gallagher. She’s a successful american author with irish roots. She’s on her own journey to, she doesn’t know exactly to what. All she knows is she wants to bring the ashes of her deeply beloved grandfather home. She finds herself years and years back in time and has to build a new life. And she meets the love of her life, Thomas. They develop deep feelings for each other, but fate and karma have other plans for the two. They have the love of a lifetime, they’re soulmates.
What the Wind Knows is a beautifully thought out, beautifully told and excellent written story. A love that survives time and distance. Anne and Thomas’ story gutted me to the core, put me through a roller coaster of emotions, had me in more than one ugly cry and then put me back together. It gave me all the feels and I loved it so so much. It’s a captivating story, told in a dual POV and I highly, highly recommend the book. I wish I could give more than 5 stars.
Heroine slips into another time period. Not an original idea, but I thought Amy Harmon did it exceptionally well. The characters are likeable, the love interest very touching. Great writing style. Very lyrical. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I loved this novel and read it in less than a day. It hit all the high points for me- historical intrigue mixed with romance and a touch of time travel. Loved it!
I can’t even begin to tell you how good this book is. It begins with Annie who’s grandfather is dying. On his deathbed, he shows her pictures and items that he’s had hidden. He asks her to return his remains to Ireland, his hometown. Annie is an author who is extremely interested in history and wants to know more about her grandfather who raised her. In Ireland, Annie finds out info about her family history and goes to spread her grandfather’s ashes as he requested. When she does this, she somehow ends up in the past, her grandfather’s past. From there, Amy Harmon weaves a story of history, exposing new characters along with significant characters from Ireland’s uprising. It kept me intrigued and fascinated with the details. This is not an exact telling of the past but has touches of things that happened in Ireland’s uprising in 1916. Annie gets an upfront seat in her grandfather’s past and learns more then she ever knew. She also learns about her connection to the past as well as her future. Trust me, this is one you want to read.
Lovely cover and title, enticing description, and the concept was so cool: going to Ireland to spread the grandfather’s ashes and, after an unfortunate incident, awakening eighty years back in time to 1921. However, the story was neither original nor gripping and the characters were rather dark and flat. I listened to the audio and the drama between Thomas and modern day Anne became grueling after awhile, and it didn’t help that the male narrators sounded either whiney or angry.
More good things: A part that was really clever, was where Thomas asks Anne how she thought to use the mare to avert the captain when members of the Auxiliary were searching the property for guns. She couldn’t tell Thomas about the book she’d written in modern day Anne’s time, so she just tells him she’d read a book in which a mare was used to distract the authorities who were looking for slaves escaping via the Underground Railroad.
And, a sentence I really liked and found fitting in the story:
“Fiction is the future. Nonfiction is the past. One can be shaped and created. One cannot.”
I loved this book and all the wonderful characters in this world. I’m a lover of historical romance so it was perfect for me. This is a timeless love story of Anne and Thomas with a little bit of fantasy. I was so invested in the story of Ireland on the brink of civil war, Mick fighting for a country they all love. Amy Harmon just has this amazing way of telling stories that I can’t get enough of.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
Beautifully written, the descriptions and turns of phrase that Amy Harmon employs are truly poetic. The characters are quirky and complex and very well developed, and the descriptions of Ireland are vivid and heartfelt. It reminded me of a Susanna Kearsley novel in that way and made it truly enjoyable to read. So if you’re a fan of Susanna Kearsley you should read this book.
The relationship between Anne and Thomas is central to the storyline. Anne travels back in time to 1921 and becomes embroiled in the events surrounding The Rising in Ireland and their fight for independence from England. Thomas is a doctor and involved in the rebellion. I loved the way their relationship developed over time. It was hard not to like both characters, and the relationship felt real in the way their strengths and flaws fit with each other. Plus it was undeniably romantic. So if you’re a fan of romance, you should read this book.
As I mentioned, Anne becomes involved in the Irish fight for independence. Some of the events depicted during that time frame were pure fiction, while others were fictionalized accounts of real events or assumptions based on rumors of that time. However, many events actually happened and real people were featured, some quite prominently. I found myself googling more information on Michael Collins, Eamon de Valera, and the various rebel factions of the time. I learned a lot and it was really fascinating. So if you enjoy history and/or are interested in Irish history, you should read this book.
There is also a mystery involving the Anne Gallagher of the 1900’s. It was an intriguing subplot with a heartbreaking resolution. So if you are a fan of mystery, you should read this book.
What I’m taking too long to say is, this is a very good book. You should read it
Amy Harmon has an incredible gift for weaving fact and fiction, creating a journey that is steeped in history and powered by love. I didn’t want this story to end.
Really and truly enjoyed this book! I was a fan of Outlander way before there was a tv series, bit I hid the books up high in a closet so my kids wouldn’t read them because of the language and the very graphic sex scenes. How refreshing to read “What the Wind Knows” and be entertained with a good story without all the excessive foul language and graphic descriptions. I also loved learning about Ireland and some of her historic figures.
I was so excited when I heard Amy Harmon was releasing another book. I have loved everything by her and What the Wind Knows is no different. It is a beautiful story, the writing makes you feel like you are back in the 1920’s Ireland. It has made me want to find out so much more about the rebellion. I loved Thomas and Annie’s character and felt very connected to her. A beautiful love story.
Amy proves once again why she is a master storyteller! He writing has a way of transporting into the world she created and getting lost in the story of the characters. Her writing is lyrical, beautiful and emotional. I can say I never wanted this story to end, as I never wanted to leave this world.
What the Wind Knows is not only a magical love story that transcends time but a love letter to Ireland and its history. I”m a big history nerd and I loved how the novel interweaves Ireland’s fight for independence into the haunting beautiful love story between Anne and Thomas. Amy did a fantastic job of bringing Ireland to life I now have an intense desire to visit this country and to learn all of its secrets.
Anne and Thomas story/journey was heartbreaking as it was magical. It was full of twist and turns and you can’t help but go on an emotional journey with them. I cried throughout the whole book not because it was sad but because it felt real. In a fight for independence and freedom from an opposer and for yourself there is going to pain and triumph, heartbreak and joy. It was a story of life and all that goes with it, the good, the bad and the ugly and it was a wonderful journey to take

I am absolutely flabbergasted by this story. It was an incredible tale of love. Love that lasts and continues throughout time. Never ending. Seriously, I don’t even know what to say about it. I don’t want to give anything away about the story-line. Please, just read it. It might possibly be the best love story that I have ever read.
