I have sat on writing this review for too long but I haven’t stopped thinking about this book. My first Amy Harmon, and absolutely not my last. It’s going to be hard to describe how I feel about What the Wind Knows but I’ll try.
This story is an enriched, souped-up experience. The history is so fantastically detailed and astounding that it will transport your mind to each and every scene locale. I fell deeply, madly in love with Irish history from reading this book. The characters and their stories are profoundly deep and exhilarating and heart-breaking on a level I’m not sure I’ve read before. This book calls to be read and loved and remembered, always. 5 plus plus stars for a new forever favorite.
This book is beautiful, inside and out. The cover draws you in and the words captivate you page after page. What the Wind Knows is a historical romance, topped off with believable time travel. I know that sounds so odd, but once you read this book you’ll truly understand.
Everything written by Amy Harmon is so unique. In this book, the story is told from the main character, Anne’s POV, but we also see Dr. Thomas Smith’s POV through his journal entries. Anne Gallagher is a famous writer from 2001. Her Irish grandfather who raised her passes away. His last wish is to have his ashes spread in Ireland where he grew up. Anne goes there and while on the lough in her rented red boat, she is swept away to the past. She ends up in Ireland in 1921, where she finds love and her beloved grandfather as a young boy. Dr.Thomas Smith saves her in more ways than one. I loved this love story between Anne and Thomas!
The tumultuous times of Ireland before it’s Civil War is the story that Anne lands in. She also meets the infamous Irish leader Michael Collins who is a friend of Dr. Smith. This story takes you on such a huge emotional journey that it often leaves you breathless. Many things are going on that I will leave for you to find out. Just know, that it is the perfect blend of history, romance, family ties, finding yourself, and of course finding love.
What the Wind Knows is a haunting novel that will leave you with so many feelings and wanting to turn around and reading it again soon. I just know these words will stay in my mind reminding me of this fascinating and appealing story.
”Don’t go near the water, love. Stay away from strand or sea. You cannot walk on water, love; The lough will take you far from me.”
This book is for all adults that love a time-traveling, historical romance. This is a 5-star winner for me.
Go get this book now! There is no other review needed! It is freaking amazing!! Honestly one of the best love stories I have ever read, it utterly destroyed me in the best way possible…. from sad tears to happy ones. Can not recommend enough!
Just gotta find myself a Thomas now….
One of the best books I read this year. Time travel back to 1921 Ireland for a romance that transcends time. You won’t be sorry!
An exciting story of time travel, romance and Ireland during a crucial time in there fight for freedom from England. I loved how the author put this story together, showing little hints that keep you guessing at the beginning then hits you with full impact and the meaning of her storyline, bravo.
Narration was interesting and added to this unique experience.
This book was utterly captivating in every way. It transported me to a time and place that I never wanted to leave.
Amy Harmon is an extremely talented writed who has woven history and a beautiful love story together through time travel. I read this book feeling the love and heartache of the Irish people during this violent but pivotal time in their history.
I haven’t read much historical fiction lately, but I read this for a book club and really enjoyed it! I not only learned a lot about the time period, but really enjoyed the characters and romantic elements.
I have been waiting until the perfect time to listen to this story, and that’s what I did. My friend recommended Audible because of the authentic sounding narration to the Irish setting, and she was so right. Amy continually blows me away with her storytelling and creativity. Wow, just wow.
Do not have words that can adequately express just how much I enjoyed this book. Just WOW.
Loved!!!
I couldn’t but it down. Amazing story.
This story is like falling down the rabbit hole. You follow a journey with Anne a writer in her trip to Ireland to learn about her family. She was raised by her grandfather after her parents died when she was 6. Her grandfather was raised by his grandmother after his parents passed during Ireland Easter Rising, leaving him to be raise my his dad’s mother. Anne grandfather gets cancer an is dying, on his deathbed he give her clues to a life in Ireland, she knows nothing about. She is given pictures a journal and his last wishes to have his ashes spread in Ireland near his family’s homestead.
It is a beautiful story of love, loyality, and time.
With an eloquence that brought tears to my eyes, Harmon has crafted a novel that is an informative historical and charming romance wrapped in a believable time-travel! Lovely.
This was epic, it’s the story about an eternal, infinite and always growing love between two characters through time.
There’s time travel and poetry in the heroine’s heart, I loved how the author written this book, it was so romantic….
This is a must read if you’re looking for an unforgettable romance
A beautiful twenty-first century woman who bears a haunting resemblance to a woman long dead. A mist over the water and an unexpected journey. Ireland in 1920, in the grips of a divisive revolution. A love so strong it transcends time. What the Wind Knows, by Amy Harmon, flawlessly blends past and present in this beautifully written time-travel novel. Suspend disbelief, and read this well-researched, magical, story filled with history, passion, and poetry. It’s a fantastic read.
I absolutely loved this book. Seriously the best historical fiction I’ve read in a long time.
This audio book is sooooo good! Narrated by my favorite narrator. I am not one to read time travel books and probably would have passed this by if not for wanting to hear another book narrated by Saskia. But low and behold, I loved the book! I was definitely invested in the characters and couldn’t stop listening. Highly recommend it!
This has a different feel then other Harmon books. More historic and reflective. When an author grows and changes sometimes the books they write change. This one felt a little like Sand and Ash. When she goes into History she goes in deep and tells a real story that is heartbreaking and real. This book gave me anxiety, I really didn’t know if it would end well and that is so hard for me, so let me just tell others like me that this does end well and everything wraps up nicely. I felt relived and so happy at the end. Amy has a way with language that draws you in and wraps you in the world she is writing. You believe everything she says. This was beautiful. I was so fascinated by this time period in Ireland. It is something I have always wanted to learn more about and Amy does an amazing job of telling the story without pointing fingers and placing blame. Most of the time History just unfolds with many people making decisions and the consequences that follow are everyone’s fault and no ones fault.
There is content in her book
Swearing- Most swear words were the Irish version of the words. They were relevant and not over done.
Violence- This is a time of war in Ireland. There is shootings and bombings and death. He is a Dr. and deals with patients who have been hurt. There is also historically accurate mass killings.
Sex- This book has after marriage sex scenes that do not go into too much detail. It is more of the feelings and emotions. There is touching of body parts mentioned through out the book, some are sexual, some are not. If it was a movie I think this part would be pg13. The swearing and violence depending on what they showed would make this an R movie.
This book has haunted me ever since I finished it! I absolutely loved it and the richness of its characters and locations. It is a perfect Irish tale, full of fog, story twists, mystery, romance, and magic. I highly recommend it!
What a wonderful book!
