Reg Rawlins, professional con, has really gotten herself into a bind this time. The fortune teller gig started as a scam, but she suddenly finds herself tangled up in the case of Warren Blake, a man who she thought was dead. It turns out he may still be alive, but in mortal peril. Reg has always taken the quick exit, the easy way out, but running out on this racket might mean someone else’s … someone else’s death.
Staying in it might mean hers.

A fun and fascinating start to what will prove to be an interesting and enoyable series. Reg has grown up in the foster care system. She was always in trouble for not following the rules and talking to her imaginary friends. As an adult she bounced from job to job, town to town, avoiding too much attention and legal trouble. When she heard about Black Sands, she decided to try her hand with being a medium, connecting people to those they have lost. She didn’t plan on those lost ones being pets, but money is money.
Fate, luck (good or bad) or something made connections for Reg when she stopped for a bit to eat.
From there we are introduced to an original cast of characters, each with his or her own special powers. Reg did not believe in magic, had no idea she has special talents, other than “reading” people. So she is learning and surprised by what happens along with the reader.
After reading this book you will be ready to jump further into this magical series.
This was really a good book. Tricky when you’re a con who doesn’t believe in magic, and who is powerfully gifted but doesn’t believe it. Put her in a town that attracts other spiritualists, add a mystery and watch what happens!
Can I have the next books now, please, please, please, please?!!!!!
Reg Rawlins has had a diverse childhood as a result , her employment has an adult is also diverse. Is she what she has taught herself through observations, and trial and error, or does she really have an ability? Even I was confused what was going on. i was going back and forth with her.
Questions that I have: What kind of paranormal is Corvin? How many other different paranormals are in this community? What is the extent of all her abilities?
Loved this book. The Blurb does not do it justice. This is the first in a new series.
Another great work of art by Ms. Workman. I am amazed at the diversity of her writing and how much I really enjoy them all. She can write cozy mystery, YA books that should be read by all, medical thrillers, Zach Goldman series and now a paranormal series. I am so glad to have found this author. I am honored that I get to read them early also.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book. Thank you. Loved it.
I only like a certain kind of paranormal mystery, one that uses the paranormal aspects as a spice. I like the “meat” of the dish to still be the characters and the storyline, the mystery itself. In What The Cat Knew, PD Workman serves up a gourmet dish exactly to my tastes.
Former foster kid and master con artist, Reg Rawlins has found a sweet setting, she thinks, for her latest con, pretending to be a medium who can contact dead people. Black Sands is a community particularly accepting of the paranormal. But she soon discovers that she’s out of her league in the realm of magic.
Her own disbelief in her powers helps to make Reg a three-dimensional character and actually lends credence to the paranormal events that unfold. Slowly she is drawn into the mystery of the dead man who doesn’t believe he’s dead and his desperate wife who only wants some sense of what really happened so she can grieve.
And slowly Reg is drawn into the Black Sands community, which includes her good-witch landlady Sarah, the not as likeable head of Sarah’s coven, and the mysterious and perhaps dangerous warlock who seems bent on seducing her. And in the end, she discovers even more unlikely members of their paranormal circles.
And then there is Starlight, the rescue cat who always seems to know what’s going on before Reg does, and tends to communicate it with unsheathed claws.
A highly entertaining book and a great lead-in to a new series for me.
I actually purchased this book after reading a chapter or two–I bought it and continued reading right away!
Reg Rawlins was a con who didn’t know that she really had psychic abilities until she moved to a small Florida town in the hopes of making some money. She meets up with some strange but friendly people and manages to rent a small cottage. She decides she needs a cat to make her act more believable.
This was one of those cats who train their human and won’t give up! He was also very good at ascertaining who was a good person and who was bad. He also liked to talk a lot–this cat seems a lot like mine–except this cat had a third eye as Reg was to find out!
She began to get clients. One woman wanted to speak to her dead husband. Reg proceeded to put on her act–then the guy used her to channel him!! One of her friends contacted an even stronger witch then herself and they investigated–was this guy dead–or was he alive as he kept saying he was.
She was warned against a smooth talker who was bound and determined to get to know her better–just wait until you find out why!! So was the husband dead or alive? You are certain to like this cozy with all the twists and turns and a lot of laughs!!
Very good reading, I enjoyed the paranormal witchy twist on the story. I never knew what to expect next. Would love to read what happens next to Reg!
Really enjoyed this series opener. Very good read with great, unique characters. Reg Rawlins is a professional con who’s new gig turns into something much bigger, and more dangerous, than just another scam. Love the relationship between Reg and her familiar, Starlight. Looking forward to reading more from this series.
My seventh read from author P.D. Workman and the first in a new series. Extremely well written as are all of P.D. Workman’s books, the characters well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book. I look forward to P.D. Workman’s next book. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
I received an ARC copy from the author at my request and this is my honest review. P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn’t want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of…lol). I can’t wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters. Pick up your copy as soon as possible.
