‘No question about it, there are two little purple lines. I’m pregnant.’
After eight years together, Lil Bailey thought she’d already found ‘the one’ – that is, … lines. I’m pregnant.’
After eight years together, Lil Bailey thought she’d already found ‘the one’ – that is, until he dumped her for a blonde twenty-something colleague. So she does what any self-respecting singleton would do: swipes right, puts on her best bra and finds herself on a first date with a handsome mountaineer called Max. What’s the worst that can happen?
Well it’s pretty bad actually. First Max ghosts her and then, after weeing on a stick (but mostly her hands), a few weeks later Lil discovers she’s pregnant. She’s single, thirty-one and living in a thimble-sized flat in London, it’s hardly the happily-ever-after she was looking for.
Lil’s ready to do the baby-thing on her own – it can’t be that hard, right? But she should probably tell Max, if she can track him down. Surely he’s not that Max, the highly eligible, headline-grabbing son of Lord and Lady Rushbrooke, currently trekking up a mountain in South Asia? Oh, maybe he wasn’t ignoring Lil after all…

After only two novels, Sophia Money-Coutts has already jumped to the very top of my favourite authors list. What Happens Now? is downright funny and relatable, and contains characters that feel like they could be your best friends. There’s also a realness to the whole situation, which adds more depth to the story, and I really enjoyed reading it. I adore Sophia’s easy to read writing style and am looking forward to the next one!
It was a little too wordy at times. Would have preferred a more streamlined story.
I enjoyed parts of this book – but, it wasn’t as funny as I expected. The plot was unusual, but not completely believable either. A nice light read, but I cannot highly recommend it, sadly.
This book was just okay, The reviews on Amazon said it was funny but I didn’t find it particularly funny. The ending has an HEA but I fount it unsatisfying and incomplete.
Did not finish too much inappropriate language
Ms Money-Coutts is a first-time author for me. For the most part, I enjoyed What Happens Now? It took me a while to get into the book and the characters. Once I did, the story flowed well enough. What really disappointed me was the ending. Abrupt isn’t even a word that does justice to the way this book ends.
What Happens Now? is definitely more on the light side. There really isn’t much character development throughout the book. The story is set in London and I did enjoy reading the British language used in the book. There are some definitely witty moments and a few funny situations. I won’t rehash the blurb, you’ve already read that. Am I glad I read this book? I suppose. Would I feel you would be missing something really special if you gave it a pass? Nope, not at all.
So, if you have some time that you’re looking for something light and you enjoy British writing you may want to pick this one up. If you’re looking for something to tug on your heartstrings, challenge you emotionally, involve a great mystery, etc keep looking.
What Happens Now? By Sophia Money-Coutts is a very upbeat contemporary novel about the highs and lows of pregnancy. I really enjoyed this honest look at life through the eyes and mind of a single thirty one year old named Lil.
The book opens with a pregnancy test and ends after delivery. The reader ‘travels’ the nine months with Lil. We see her take on situations as she asks the questions all mums-to-be want to ask. Written in the first person the reader becomes intimately acquainted with Lil. I loved her down to earth manner that contrasted with those around her in the birthing class.
What Happens Now? was not just about pregnancy, it was about good friends, work colleagues and family. Not all families are made up of the traditional mum, dad, two children and a dog but the families are made up of love.
Sophia Money-Coutts wrote an honest and often hilarious look at life. I was literally laughing out loud throughout as I recognised that there are things I have said or thought that mirror Lil.
What Happens Now? was a wonderful feel-good novel, just perfect for the garden, the beach or the sofa! It’s a novel that left me smiling.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
A word of caution: there is language and scenes some readers may not like. I found there was too much detail (for me) in the bedroom scenes/references so I skipped chunks of the narrative. It did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
Oh there are so many laugh out loud moments in this story that I had family members looking at me strangely while reading this one, this is MS Money-Coutts second book and I will be adding the first one to my to read list, I really enjoyed getting know Lil and her fabulous friends and family and of course Max.
Lil Bailey is a teacher at a private boys school in London and she has recently been dumped by her boyfriend of eight years for a younger woman he works with, so it is time for Lil to get back in the dating scene using a dating app she is only thirty one and her first date is mountaineer Max, gorgeous Max and after a few drinks at the pub she goes home with him and spends a fabulous night with him, next morning he leaves her a note and is gone. Six weeks later Lil finds herself pregnant.
It is decision time for Lil what to do? she has a fabulous family and awesome friends and she decides that yes she can do this. She needs to get touch with Max and let him know but he seems to be ignoring her and then she finds out that he is the famous explorer Max Rushbrooke son to Lord and Lady Rushbrooke things just keep on spiraling along for Lil.
Max what can I say gorgeous and always looking for the next mountain to climb, he too has recently broken up with his partner of many years and his family is a little different, but he is not entirely happy with the news that he is going to be a father at first, but spending time with Lil on his return to England just might be changing his mind.
Spending time with Lil and her friends Jess and Clem, was lots of fun, I really liked Lil’s take on life she is strong and fun and really made me laugh and I think it is time that Max found some real happiness and Lil is the person to do that. I loved the friendships in this story as well, true friends are like diamonds and Lil has some of those that she can laugh and cry with. I do recommend this one, very enjoyable and very entertaining and with a good dose of sensual relationship thrown in.
Fun and light reading.
I was looking forward to this book but it felt a bit hard for me to get into it in the first half of the book as the heroine was quite annoying and felt dragging a lot, but I rarely DNF a book and kept reading. I was glad that I didn’t gave up because the story became more interesting with every page til the end and had a lot of laugh out loud moments and funny situations.
A nice, funny and lovely summer read for everyone who enjoys the genre.
What Happens Now? by Sophia Money-Coutts a four-star read that will make you wonder. I am going to be honest I started this one three times, I kept hearing such good things I picked I up again, but for the first couple I only got a couple of chapters in, then third time lucky I picked it up and it stuck, this time I found the Lil liked, she warmed me up and made me care, the first couple of tries I found her a little annoying. Overall this was a good read, not what I expected but still well rounded and with good characters, if you are looking for light romance then this isn’t it, but if you are looking for real and funny then give it a go and keep reading if you struggle at first, it is worth it in the end.
Copy received from Harper Collins Australia for an honest review
I was intrigued by the blurb of What Happens Now?, but I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I mean, the surprise baby has been done over and over, what could be new, right?
From the minute I started reading, I knew that this was going to be different for me. The story isn’t different to a lot of books out there, however the story telling was wonderful, and I wanted to keep reading. I was reading this story in my lunch breaks at work, so I found myself sneaking in a few extra minutes when I could to finish a chapter, and left me wanting to read more as I walked away each day.
Going in , I thought Max and Lil’s story was just going to be the light and fluffy, however it had some darker, more emotional times that gave the story wonderful depth.
There are some fabulous secondary characters, particularly Lil’s best friends Jess and Clem. Oh, how I adore them! I need them to move in with me!
Our lovelies story is not always the easiest and lovey-dovey-est story out there, and I found myself wanting to skip to the last chapter to check that things ended the way I wanted them too – I refrained from doing so though!
I did feel though, that after all the tension and build up between Lil and Max, the ending was very rushed. I mean, I got the ending that I was wanting, however to me it felt like it was “oh OK, this happened, the end”. I wanted more!
This was my first Sophie Money-Coutts read, but I definitely want to read more.
*4.5 Stars*
ARC kindly received from Harlequin Aus in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so much better than I expected it to be. It sounded interesting from the blurb, but when you actually start reading it, you discover that the characters are fun, and whilst the story-line is serious, the book is written in just the right way to make it a bit more light and fluffy.
I really enjoyed reading this one, and was truly unsure how things would turn out between Lil and Max. We don’t actually get too much of Max in this book, its mostly about Lil and how she’s navigating her new circumstances, what with being pregnant and all, along with other normal things about her life, such as her friends and her job.
There are some great secondary characters in this too, in the form of Lil’s best friends Jess and Clem, and also her parents. They make for a fun and crazy bunch, and you really find yourself easily liking these characters and getting drawn into their world.
I also really liked how this was set in London, and everything about the writing and characters was truly British. At least it was from my perspective (being an Aussie and having visited the UK once). I really felt like I was over there too – really great world building there.
I sped through this alot faster than I expected, and I truly enjoyed it. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. It was a good ending, but way too abrupt, and that’s why my rating is 4.5 stars rather than the full 5. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
