One secret, one nightmare, one lie. You guess which is which.
1. I have the scar of a gunshot on my forehead.
2. I have willfully misrepresented my identity to the US military.
3. I’m the new mother of a seven-year-old girl.
Kellen Adams suffers from a yearlong gap in her memory. A bullet to the brain will cause that. But she’s discovering the truth, and what she learns changes her life, … to the brain will cause that. But she’s discovering the truth, and what she learns changes her life, her confidence, her very self. She finds herself in the wilderness, on the run, unprepared, her enemies unknown–and she is carrying a priceless burden she must protect at all costs. The consequences of failure would break her. I set aside time to read this book cover to cover but turns out I didn’t need to because I wouldn’t have been able to put the book down anyway.
This was an amazing ride of a story that kept me riveted to page after page.
Kellen Adams (Cecilia Adams Lykke) is derailed trying to sneak into the wine cellar, when she notices Roderick Blake in need of a rescue from the roof three stories above. The rescue earned her an injury and while recuperating Max informs her of a job that Nils Brooks suggested for her delivering a rare artifact to someone called The Restorer.
Kellen encounters troubles, one being the stowaway of her seven year old daughter, Rae. Rae overhearing her father, Max, say that they need to bond and decided that was her opportunity to go on an adventure with her mommy. Kellen finds herself without her cell phone, hunted by groups of bad people, a rare artifact to deliver, and a daughter she needs to protect.
Kellen can take care of herself, and she’s going to need to teach Rae a few tricks along the way, while learning that her mother instincts are there. After all, they are ThunderFlash and LightningBug!
This is my favorite series! I loved Rae and Zone’s character, both very stubborn and determined. I’d love to see Zone show up more, even if he is a hermit. I laughed with the visual when Kellen trying to ditch the Di Luca family for a respite, and hides behind shrubbery, only to get invaded over and over again by those needing her immediate attention. The ending left me excited for the next book in the series!
I would like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin-Romance for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
There is not enough to say about this book. Dodd’s writing is unique, creative and everything it should be for this genre. So many authors in this category attempt to subconsciously hand over clues to the reader, and with that they sacrifice the mystery. But not Dodd. Her style of writing leaves the reader to contemplate and it’s a brilliant breath of fresh air. The characters are deeply developed and investing in them is not difficult to do. I only found out this was the second book in the series after I was finished reading, so it is safe to say it can be read as a stand-alone.
Kellen Adams has been through more than any woman has. Beaten. Shot. Enlisted. As she starts a new life, she is faced with new challenges, like being the mother to a seven-year old that she doesn’t remember birthing. Suffering from amnesia, though, is the least of her worries. As Kellen attempts to put the pieces of her past together and move forward, she is put into a dangerous situation with her daughter, Rae. Will Max, Kellen’s ex-lover and Rae’s father, be able to find them? Will Kellen’s military training be enough to save them all? And what about the bullet that’s still lodged in Kellen’s brain?
Dodd provides a narrative of a woman who has fought through tremendous odds. As a US Military Captain, she is strong and independent but now, ironically, finds herself at the mercy of a seven-year old girl. The reader is provided an exploration of this developing relationship, which has comical undertones. The backbone of this book is murder, mystery, suspense and Dodd does not disappoint. She is able to skillfully deliver a multifaceted plot with dynamic characters. Highly recommended read. 5 stars.
Thanks to #NetGalley for this ARC of #WhatDoesntKillHer
Another amazing book. Extremely entertaining, captivating, and interesting read. I could not put it down. Wonderfully written with strong and intriguing characters. I want to read more from this author.
The blurb for this one sounds exciting and certainly caught my interest. Full disclosure – I read the first book in this series and had less than stellar feelings about it. Nevertheless, I gave this second book a try, and quickly found that my initial reactions hadn’t changed. At its core, this could be a truly gripping story, but it just goes way too far, and too many things border on the ridiculous. And I still don’t understand the way characters are introduced. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a result of Kellen’s coma or the fact that she’s former military, but giving what is essentially a list of vital statistics with each new character only served to be an irritation. Then we have dialogue that seems like so much filler rather than leading to anything important, abrupt point of view changes, and a rather disappointing reveal of Kellen’s memories, especially after so much build up. This book has received some rave reviews, and I realize that I’m in the minority here, but it is what it is. Whether it’s the over the top story or the writing style, this series is clearly not for me.
