A young woman plays the role of her life when kidnappers mistake her for a celebrity. Those who know where she is don’t value her life. Those who do don’t know she’s missing.
I’ve read all of Fisher’s Compass Crime Series books, and I think this is the best one yet. Martina Ramos is acting as body double for pop star Ruby while the celebrity is in rehab. It’s a dream job—travel the world, be seen in the places that matter, and keep the real Ruby’s situation and whereabouts secret. What can go wrong?
The action starts on page one, with Martina waking up locked inside the engine hold on a boat, held captive by two masked men. And since she has told everyone she’s remaining at Oxford to study during the break, her friends and family don’t even know she’s missing. If the six-million-dollar ransom isn’t paid within four days, Martina a/k/a Ruby will be dead. And if the kidnappers learn they’ve got the wrong girl, she won’t even last that long.
This book has it all–great description, strong, believable characters, and a page-turning plot that grabs you and doesn’t let go until the very end. Highly recommended.

I am late posting my review for this book. Imagine being kidnapped while playing a role, and having to maintain that role to stay alive. Imagine having a brother and his team stop at nothing to save you. Full of action and suspense, great characterization. Joni Fisher’s journalism and smarts show through page after page. Should have started with the first in the series, but this book can absolutely stand alone.

I have read all three of the Compass Crimes Series and have loved them all. West of Famous was my favorite, but I’ve felt that way after each one. Great characters and plot that create a real page-turner! I can’t wait to see what blows in from the East:)

West of Famous by Joni M. Fisher is the 3rd book in a series, however the books can be read alone and fully understood. I do recommend reading the entire series, since like most series books, they build on each other and background information is gained that makes story deeper. It has been a while since I read books 1 and 2 and at this point I do not remember the details but I remember the character’s relationships and the major situations from the previous stories.
This story is about a young women that takes a job as a stand-in for a famous singer. While playing this role, she is kidnapped. The kidnappers have no idea they have the wrong woman. They think they have a spoiled celebrity, but what they really have a spiritual woman that will use her mind and her inner strength to try to overcome the situation she finds herself in.
Her kidnappers are focused only the money they plan to get for the kidnapping. They think they have a watertight plan, but by kidnapping the wrong person, they did not execute the plan very well. They have Martina on a boat in an isolated area waiting for the deadline to arrive to pick up the money.
Martina is the youngest sibling in a large family. She is used to having others come to her rescue when he gets herself in situations that she cannot handle. She did not tell anyone that she took this job as a stand-in, so she knows no one will be looking for her and she will have to try to save herself.
Martina’s father, a retired Navy admiral, tried to teach her many things while on boats in her youth. While she had no interest to learn at that time, now she pulls all that knowledge that she learned only to please her father from her mind. Will she have enough knowledge to escape these men and have a future?
The plot is so intense and believable. I was deeply involved in the story and would have read the entire book in one sitting, if that had been possible. When I was not reading, the story was always on my mind. Will Martina get away? Will the kidnapper come to justice? Will her family, especially her ex-SEAL brother, Ruis, ever see her again?
I encourage everyone to read this book about a strong women, strong family bonds (blood family and the family that you chose) and the strength that having a relationship with God can pull you through difficult situations.
I encourage everyone to read this fantastic book, also the entire series!
