Web of Deceit
It’s 1949. World War II is over, but it has a way of haunting people for years to come.
Gordon Sandalwood suspects his wife Edith is hiding something from him, and he asks Denver private investigator Dewey Webb to find out what. Dewey, toughened by his own war experiences, reluctantly takes the case, certain it … reluctantly takes the case, certain it will lead to nothing. But when he sees Edith rendezvous with a mysterious man, Dewey realizes his assumptions might be wrong. As he digs deeper to identify the stranger, he turns up secrets that reach back into the war, and as he unravels a web of deceit, he discovers who has the most to gain, and the most to lose.
A historical mystery that’s great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing.
Dewey Webb first appeared in the Reed Ferguson mystery, Back Story. Pick up a copy of Back Story to find out more about this classic hard-boiled detective.
Great Reviews for the Reed Ferguson private investigator series:
Kirkus Reviews:
The promising kickoff to Pawlish’s comic mystery series, starring far-from-perfect PI Reed Ferguson. Pawlish earns high marks for plot construction, with twists and turns naturally unfolding as Ferguson, inexperienced but not incapable, feels his way through the case. A good-humored mystery series worth following.
5 star review:
Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things.

I’m a great fan of Ms. Pawlish’s work! Great read. Looking forward to the next book of the series!
New story series by a favorite author. Enjoyable, will probably have to read the rest of the series.
Fun read good twists
Great Noir characters with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Fun read
A real gunshots detective read in a faithful noir setting.
An excellent read! Captivating!
I really like mysteries and this book had a great detective who told a really interesting story where you felt you were right there with him as the plot unfolded.
very entertaining & easy to read.
There was enough depth in this story that the ending was unpredictable. Very interesting and imaginative. One point: it is a SAFE deposit box not safety. I would recommend this book.
