Web of Deceit
It’s 1949. World War II is over, but it has a way of haunting people for years to come.
Gordon Sandalwood suspects his wife Edith is hiding something from him, and he asks Denver private investigator Dewey Webb to find out what. Dewey, toughened by his own war experiences, reluctantly takes the case, certain it … reluctantly takes the case, certain it will lead to nothing. But when he sees Edith rendezvous with a mysterious man, Dewey realizes his assumptions might be wrong. As he digs deeper to identify the stranger, he turns up secrets that reach back into the war, and as he unravels a web of deceit, he discovers who has the most to gain, and the most to lose.
A historical mystery that’s great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing.
Dewey Webb first appeared in the Reed Ferguson mystery, Back Story. Pick up a copy of Back Story to find out more about this classic hard-boiled detective.
Great Reviews for the Reed Ferguson private investigator series:
Kirkus Reviews:
The promising kickoff to Pawlish’s comic mystery series, starring far-from-perfect PI Reed Ferguson. Pawlish earns high marks for plot construction, with twists and turns naturally unfolding as Ferguson, inexperienced but not incapable, feels his way through the case. A good-humored mystery series worth following.
5 star review:
Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things.

I love the main character and I buy each book as it comes out.
I’ve read several of the authors books and love the characters. This one has new characters (one of whom appears in other titles as secondary characters, so I’ll have to go back and search for them). Being old enough to remember the 1950’s the details really hit home and made me nostalgic in a very nice way. Wonderful! I highly recommend it.
First book in the series and I will read another to see how the characters progress.
Gritty protagonist, believable characters, and plausible plot line. A PI take that kicks ass and takes names in the post World War II setting of Denver.
This was a great story. I enjoyed this all the way through. Great book for fans of Raymond Chandler.
Excellent, captured the period very well
I think Renee is one of the upcoming writers and love all of her books.
Love her books!
Could hardly put it down.
Ms Pawlish is one of my new favorite authors, and this book does not disappoint! She amazes me with her talent and imagination. Dewey Webb is a very interesting detective, reminiscent of a happily married, family man Sam Spade. Whether you have read any of her other novels, or this will be your first, you should find an interesting, clean read that will leave you with a smile on your face.
This is an author I follow. I enjoy the way she construct her sentences….expresses the world she creates in her books.
Historical mystery
Character is your everyday hardboiled detective, but the story was fast paced and held my interest.
I loved it!
Good characters. Kept you guessing. Great read
Formulaic. It tried to be an old fashioned detective mystery and fell short
Always enjoy this author. The setting is excellent
Paulish’s books are always kind of juvenile. Simple storylines, simple characters without too much depth. Easy read without a lot of thought required. I read this because I usually enjoy the Reed Ferguson books and thought this would be similar.
I don’t think I will be reading anymore of this series. Just wasn’t that good.
great…love this series
Boring
