Web of Deceit
It’s 1949. World War II is over, but it has a way of haunting people for years to come.
Gordon Sandalwood suspects his wife Edith is hiding something from him, and he asks Denver private investigator Dewey Webb to find out what. Dewey, toughened by his own war experiences, reluctantly takes the case, certain it … reluctantly takes the case, certain it will lead to nothing. But when he sees Edith rendezvous with a mysterious man, Dewey realizes his assumptions might be wrong. As he digs deeper to identify the stranger, he turns up secrets that reach back into the war, and as he unravels a web of deceit, he discovers who has the most to gain, and the most to lose.
A historical mystery that’s great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing.
Dewey Webb first appeared in the Reed Ferguson mystery, Back Story. Pick up a copy of Back Story to find out more about this classic hard-boiled detective.
Great Reviews for the Reed Ferguson private investigator series:
Kirkus Reviews:
The promising kickoff to Pawlish’s comic mystery series, starring far-from-perfect PI Reed Ferguson. Pawlish earns high marks for plot construction, with twists and turns naturally unfolding as Ferguson, inexperienced but not incapable, feels his way through the case. A good-humored mystery series worth following.
5 star review:
Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things.

A good read in the hard-boiled post World War 2 detective genre.
I loved Dewey and his wife and new baby’s storyline- esp. Dewey as a PI. His connects and way of working is so on the mark! I loved the flow and pace of the story. Well written, very good book. I truly enjoyed it.
love this series!!! hard boiled and fabulous!!
A good story with interesting characters and a few unexpected twists. Well written and it definitely kept my attention. I didn’t want to put it down. In fact, I didn’t. I read it straight through even though I had been planning on reading for about 15 minutes. Dewey Webb will keep you rooted to your seat. I’m looking forward to spending more time with him in the near future.
Charming, well-written, period cozy mystery. Tough guy PI with surprising presence and strength when needed. Reminiscent of old black and white films. The negative for me is that there isn’t much going on. Simple plot, lots of discovered connections, old-fashioned detective work.
Predictable.
Entertaining read.
Plowing through the mystery of what Edith was up to via classic “detecting” was a pleasure and unfolded at the right place.
Good detective story. Want to read more from this author.
All of this series is good.
Don’t read this book unless you want to enjoy a good mystery. Renee Pawlish’s Dewey Webb will transport you to a time when it took good detective work, and shoe leather to solve crimes. Warning, if you read Web Of Deceipt you will be hooked on Dewey Webb books, but that is a good thing.
This was very atmospheric if the post-war years
Loved the era of this story,….not sure why, just interesting and not the same as most things I read.
Read the whole series back-to-back. Wish there were more in the series! Great books!
Everything I read that is written by this author is terrific. This is no exception.
very good narrative
I like his style of writing and there is no cursing, no gore. A nice pleasant read.
I got this book because I thought it was another Reed Ferguson mystery which I enjoy very much, but this one was no where near as good.I found it very flat. I will be much more carefully next time a download a book by Renee Pawlish
Renée Pawlish has seamlessly transitioned from today’s Reed Ferguson & the comic murder mystery genre to a late post WWII mystery genre. From a single Reed to a married Dewey Webb. Pawlish’s development of the plot, her attention to detail coupled with her ability to contrive clear, concise and playful prose makes for an entertaining read in all her books. Dewey Webb is everything Reed Ferguson wants to be, An experienced PI with a military background. Pawlish pays great attention to detail and gets everything right.I received an advance reader copy from the author.
If you like detective stories, you will love Renee Pawlish characters and storyline.
