Web of Deceit
It’s 1949. World War II is over, but it has a way of haunting people for years to come.
Gordon Sandalwood suspects his wife Edith is hiding something from him, and he asks Denver private investigator Dewey Webb to find out what. Dewey, toughened by his own war experiences, reluctantly takes the case, certain it … reluctantly takes the case, certain it will lead to nothing. But when he sees Edith rendezvous with a mysterious man, Dewey realizes his assumptions might be wrong. As he digs deeper to identify the stranger, he turns up secrets that reach back into the war, and as he unravels a web of deceit, he discovers who has the most to gain, and the most to lose.
A historical mystery that’s great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing.
Dewey Webb first appeared in the Reed Ferguson mystery, Back Story. Pick up a copy of Back Story to find out more about this classic hard-boiled detective.
Great Reviews for the Reed Ferguson private investigator series:
Kirkus Reviews:
The promising kickoff to Pawlish’s comic mystery series, starring far-from-perfect PI Reed Ferguson. Pawlish earns high marks for plot construction, with twists and turns naturally unfolding as Ferguson, inexperienced but not incapable, feels his way through the case. A good-humored mystery series worth following.
5 star review:
Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things.

Dewey Webb, a blunt, brash private investigator, takes on a case in post-World War II Denver. An engineer is troubled by his wife’s mysterious behavior, as she seems to be shielding a secret. He hires Webb to follow her. A simple, straightforward assignment takes a convoluted turn when she passes an envelope to a man she meets in a park, then weeps. Webb learns more when he eavesdrops on the wife and her sister in a restaurant, and follows his assigned ‘dame’ Edith to a coin shop. He learns more about Edith than she would want him to know.
An excellent, well-plotted traditional mystery, with just a sprinkle of blood.
This is the best who-done-it I have read in a long time. It held my interest from the first paragaph all the way to the last sentence.
This is a a series that is set in post WW2 Colorado about a private detective who takes on a case involving a man who killed his boss.
Really enjoyed this book and it gave me a feel for old Denver when my father was a child. I really enjoyed reading this book. Look forward to more in the series.
Great read
I felt transported to a time I barely remember while reading this. I cared about the characters.
Good read!
Great read
Disappointing that a political party was disparaged. If not for that, it would have been a good story.
Great fun read. Hope for more..
This is a good who done it set just after WWII.
The geographic descriptions of Denver Colorado were great.
very predictable not a deep read.
An interesting old style private detective story. I enjoyed it
very enjoyable
Having been born in early 1940’s and growing up in the 40’s and 50’s, there were several references to the way things were then that brought back many memories. Things have changed so much over the years! Also now being a resident of CO, I found references to many of the places in Denver very interesting. The book is easy reading with enjoyable characters. I’ll admit that I had the ending figured out all wrong, but it was a great read.
Wonderful detective story! Reminds me of all the old black and white movies I love to watch. Can’t wait to read the next one!
great historical
This is just one of a great series. A P.I. from an earlier era manages to solve the crimes without modern technology.
I love all the Dewey Webb stories. The characters are diverse, interesting and often remind me of people I know. They are like real people doing real things in the real world. I also like the time period the stories are set in, the second world war still fresh in a lot of minds. Best of all, these mysteries, and this one in particular, kept me guessing, the very reason we read mysteries, right?
Good time period evocation of Cincinnati. (Not all books need to be in NYC or LA, right?) Good plot and characterizations.
