My review:
Will her secret crushes her future when it is at arm’s length…
This book left me with mixed feelings, I loved the main hero and the story moved fast with aplenty of nice characters. But I love my heroine with a bit more of backbone.
I hated Isabella for hurting Nate because she was afraid to be hurt in return.
She took the coward way and while I liked her at the beginning and her care for the battered soldiers, I could not fantom why she continued her masquerade when other siblings around her found their HEA.
Nate is such a compassionate and caring soul, he takes care of the weakest, and just longs to be loved in return by the one person whom stirs his blood.
It is why I was unable to understand Isabella’s rejection of his suit. Never did he show he was not a trustworthy fellow.
So her lack of faith in him was what bothered me the most.
So it is there I can praise Mrs Jane Charles’ talent, as I might have gave up my reading as I was upset at Isabella’s cowardice, always in hiding instead of facing head held high her past and future. But I continued, at first other characters caught my interests like Bianca, Isabella’s sister and Nate’s siblings too. Then because Nate deserved his HEA, and even if I was not fond of Isabella, she was who he wanted.
Why my rating is a 3.5 stars rounded to 4.
I was granted a free copy of this in exchange of a fair review. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Sometimes fate does not seem kind when two people love for each other. Isabella worked as a nurse with her brother helping with the wounded soldiers in the war with Napoleon. She met Nathaniel when he was being taken care of and felt an immediate attraction to him. Of course Nate felt the same about her, but she knew they could never be together. She had a secret which would make that impossible.
From the war in Brussels to the ballroom in England, they meet again after the war, each having wondered what happened to the other. Nate was determined to win her hand but she avoided him at every turn!
What could the secret be to keep her from the man she loved? A sweet story that had me turning the pages to see what would happen. Loved all the siblings and know there will be some stories coming out of their lives, or at least I hope so!!
Do not miss Weathering Captain Storm. You’ll love it!
Weathering Captain Storm is book 2 in the Spirited Storms series by Jane Charles. Wow! I loved this book. It pulled me in immediately and held me captive. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters. Captain Nathaniel Storm is one of those endearing rogues that you can’t get enough of. And I loved Isabella Valentine – the tireless “Florence Nightingale” of the Napoleonic war. I loved that this Regency romance is set on a battlefield. It is so out of the box and surprising. “He stopped directly in front of her and slid a hand around her waist, drawing her against him. Isabella had no choice but to tilt her head back and look up so that she could see him. ‘But first…’Nate didn’t finish the sentence but took her lips and pulled her even closer. His mouth claimed hers, seeking, plunging with desire. Her body flamed and her knees nearly gave way. This was so much better than she remembered…He plundered and took. Delved and tasted. She, his willing victim.” This is actually a sweet romance with only a few heady kisses. I loved it. I was given a copy of this book.
Nathaniel (Nate) Storm elder twin to Samuel, met Isabella Valentine when he was injured in the Peninsular Wars & then again a year or so later when he had a fever prior to Waterloo. Isabella worked as a nurse alongside her doctor brother, Orlando. They fell in love with each other when they first met & this hasn’t changed with time but Isabella rejected Nate because of the family secret. Two years have now passed & both are in London.
The Spirited Storms meet the Vexing Valentines & the novella is everything I hoped it would be. I again burned the midnight oil as didn’t want to put it down. I loved both Nate & Isabella, it was lovely to catch up on characters from previous books & of course the Duke of Danby had to help. I’m looking forward to reading the other Storm & Valentine stories & eagerly await them
I am fascinated by stories about soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars and how they coped with life after the war. This story does not disappoint, and we get the added benefit of seeing how women who followed the drum as nurses, officer’s wives, and camp followers fared during the war.
Isabella Valentine followed her brother, a doctor, to the war to act as a nurse. Often, she could do nothing more than read to the men, hold their hands, or write letters for them. Other times, she was called upon to help with medical procedures, and she fully experienced the horrors of war. Because of her scandalous family history, she thought she would never be able to have a husband and family of her own, so Isabella felt nursing was her way of contributing to make the world better. When one special patient, Capt. Nathaniel Storm, started to capture her heart, she knew she had to discourage him. Little did she know that Capt. Storm would not be so easily dissuaded.
After two years of trying to forget Isabella, Nathaniel is back in London and determined to get some answers. Did she really never love him? What is the secret she is trying to hide? And why is the Duke of Danby sticking his match-making nose into his business?
This novella features familiar characters from other Jane Charles stories including the many Valentine and Storm siblings and, of course, the Duke of Danby. I liked the more serious nature of this story and the veterans’ issues brought to light that are still so important to us today.
