We were never supposed to fall in love. We did it anyway.New York Times bestselling author, S.L. Scott, crafts her signature heartfelt style into an epic and emotional, second chance, standalone romance. I have three goals: graduate from an Ivy League university, get into medical school, and follow in my father’s well-established footsteps. Everything was going exactly as planned until the local … planned until the local bad boy was delivered to my doorstep. Literally.
From the moment we meet, my old life becomes unrecognizable, but I have no regrets. I’m utterly captivated by him. His smirk. His heart. His sharp wit. He pushes me to live, to be wild, to pursue the dream I’ve always hidden inside.
To the rest of the world, we make no sense.
Me, the girl from the gilded New England coast.

I can honestly say that this book and these characters definitely stole a huge chunk of my heart.
Chloe is in her final year of med school, she’s always been a grade A student, the good girl. Underneath it all is a parent, her biggest peer pressures aren’t other students of friend, its her father, Overbearing, pushy pushy pushy and always expecting her to conform and achieve what he orders !!
I loved that she wanted to be herself despite him!!
Joshua is in a similar situation, his mum has raised him but his father is a rich egotistical AH of the utmost degree and didn’t really have any interest in his son other than wanting him to take a path his father wants.
Two separate souls who meet and fall in love. Oh what a beautiful love is it, its pure, its true it had me floating in the clouds, each interaction with this couple whether it was steamy moments or just them connecting as a couple had me bursting with happiness. Life was good and i was absolutely involved and enjoying every second of the ride.
But this author lulls you into her web, gives you a safe secure place where you are glowing with the love and romance and then she pulls the rug right below your feet and leaves you drowning !!!
What??? Why?? arrggghhhh how can i pick up the pieces of my heart that just got shattered !!! This may seem like a second chance romance but it sure isn’t !! IT’s a perfect romance with perfect characters that don’t get a chance !!!!!!!!!! MY heart !!! but how can something so beautiful be found again?
YOU HAVE TO READ IT !!
This is a book that will give you so many thoughts, a book to make you think about parenting, a book to give you belief in real true love, a book that will make you think twice !! This author has a special talent that always makes me want to believe that dreams can come true, not to tear them down !!
My honest opinion of this book is.. GRAB IT NOW !!!
I just had to give a big sigh soon after starting this story, it was just so swoonworthy. Ahh first love, so hot, passionate and indestructible. Despite them being from different sides of the tracks nothing is going to get between and their love will be forever. Unfortunately fate has other plans for them and they are torn apart by forces beyond their control.
I loved this story, it is so well written by Ms Scott as always, great characters (including the non-human ones, Frankie and Dwayne Evans/Hemsworth). Chloe and Josh seem very mature for their age and they know what they want out of life and are determined to get it with each other. Chloe’s Mom is a character we all would love to have as our Mom, since her divorce she has become more of a fun person which is great to see.
Be ready to experience a range of emotions from laughter to anger, pain and sadness and make sure that you have a box of tissues handy. You will love this story and will become a firm believer in the power of love. Another great story from Ms Scott not to be missed.
It was a bit of a slow beginning but after a few chapters I got into the story. The journey of Joshua and Chloe was one of love and heartbreak but also one of hope. A story you don’t want to miss out on.
Chloe is on the path to become a doctor and to follow in her dad’s footsteps but when she meets Josh, there’s just something about him that intrigues her. The chemistry between them is flying high and they get closer every single day and their love grows stronger. The future seems to get brighter for them with every step they take but when a tragic incident happens, their lives will be forever changed… After a few years pass by, both have built up a life of their own but there’s always been something missing. Will they find a way back to each other or is it too late after everything that has happened?…
WOAH this is a story that will capture every facet and emotion in your body, mind, heart, and soul.
This book gives so much food for thought and brings so many questions to the mind as a book reader, a daughter/son, a parent, a friend and a boyfriend/girlfriend. Here are a few questions that came to my mind:
As a parent you have to ask yourself what is my place in the role of my child’s future? How far do you go? Do you have the right to interfere in their decisions?
As a son/daughter you have to ask yourself how much do I owe my parents? Do they play a significant role in my decisions about the future? Does love equal control for the remainder of my life? When is it alright to strike out on your own? Will they ever see me as an adult and not just their child?
As a friend what is my responsibility? Is it to always just be there or support them no matter what even if I feel they’re making a mistake? Or is it my duty to risk a friendship by telling them how you really feel?
As a boyfriend/girlfriend what are real feelings versus a crush? Can I get beyond myself to see what am I willing to compromise or change about myself or is that giving away too much? Can we really get beyond class distinctions? Is there such a thing as everlasting love? Is there really love at first sight?
These are just a few of the storylines in this wonderful all encompassing book. As if this isn’t enough you get a beautiful love story full of all the smiles, heartache, gut wrenching moments, intrigue, sweetness, snappy comebacks, heat, hope and love
Joshua seems pretty confident. From the moment you meet him he has the swagger, charm, intelligence and good looks to back it all up. Life hasn’t been easy but he seems to have come to terms with his station.
Chloe is a whiz. She’s driven, has a need to please her parents, smart, determined, not looking for love and is beautiful. She also comes from a very affluent family. Her future in her mind is set? What she wonders is, is she entitled to alter those dreams?
These two individuals seem like night and day. However, as we all know looks can be deceiving.
That’s all the spoilers you’re getting from me. The beauty is in the story. You need to read this story and get the full enjoyment for yourself.
What I will say is that all the secondary characters play a significant part in this tale. Along with Joshua and Chloe they will elicit many emotions. You’ll may find yourself coming out with questions for your own life story?
There’s a song I love called, The World Goes Round by Liza MinnelIi. I thought of it while I was reading this book. It’s perfect for this book. Anyway, I digress.
Evolution is defined as the process of growth and development. To me this is a story of evolution on every level; evolution of self, evolution of equality, evolution of partnership, evolution of love. Josh and Chloe’s story really made me think about all of the above. Watching it evolve in this book was so beautiful. This is the perfect example of, “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans”. Bravo, S.L. Scott. You’ve done it once again!
I adore it when a book sweeps me off of my feet, and We Were Once, swept me off of my feet from their first meeting. Chloe and Joshua are destiny, but they’re more than that. They’re so good together and you simply cannot help but root for them. It’s a story of fated love and second chances and I was invested in every single word of it. (I woke up at 6:30 a.m. just so I could dive back into this book and I wake up before 9:00 for nothing.)
Chloe and Joshua are in their final year of college with the world and their future ahead of them when they meet each other. While it seems like a different side of the track’s story it is so much deeper and richer than that and S.L. does a beautiful job, not only telling this story but weaving the words together in a way that entrance you and pull you into this magical world. It is an incredible ride and while everything inside their love bubble is beautiful and happy what makes this extraordinary is the journey that comes all of the outside forces colliding in and creating trouble and turmoil.
As a heroine, the transformation that Chloe undergoes as she falls in love and has to grow up and make hard choices is beautiful, I love to see a character grow into a fabulous strong version of who they really are inside. As for Joshua, he undergoes his own journey, but I gotta tell you from the beginning I absolutely adore this plant-loving guy. He’s not perfect, but he’s extraordinary and sailing right towards the top of my favorite heroes list. It goes beyond the main characters though, because they’re backed by a beautiful and lovely cast of characters supporting them. Both moms are beyond amazing and everyone needs a Ruby in their life.
I couldn’t put this down and when I was forced to I was itching to pick it back up it really is amazing and I loved it.
A second chance romance from S.L. Scott!
I have no idea where to start with this review because I don’t want to potentially spoil the story for anyone. This is definitely a book that you want to read and experience for yourself. I’m going to try to hit key pieces so you can get a glimpse of the awesome.
Characters:
Josh and Chloe are both interesting and easy to like. They meet as seniors at Yale and are a bit star crossed. I loved how they seemed to bring balance to each other and even at 20 and 21 seemed to have staying power and the problem solving skills needed for a long term relationship. The older versions had perseverance and I was proud of how they handled themselves is the face of adversity.
Characters who aren’t people:
Frankie and Dwayne Evans/Hemsworth add a humor element that is cute and made me giggle more than once
Story:
Be prepared for the story to take a hard right on you and it to totally be worth it. There were a couple of chapters where my heart was in my throat and I wasn’t sure what would happen. Everything got resolved in a way that I was happy with and I can’t recommend this emotional book enough.
Where did that 1/2 star go?
Okay, this is one of those things that could be a positive or negative depending on your reading style. I finished We Were Once and there were a couple of things that didn’t feel resolved to me. Both centered around the relationships Josh and Chloe had with their fathers. These aren’t huge things key to the story flow, but they niggled at me. I wanted to know how/why things played out a certain way.
Overall:
This is a unique read with wonderful characters and I highly recommend grabbing it!
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.
In this book we meet Chloe Fox and Joshua Evans. What do you do when the person you crave more than anything is the person you shouldn’t be with. Chloe’s father has had a plan for her life for years now. She is finally in Yale and is determined to stick with the plan and following in her father’s footsteps. Since the divorce of her parents she finds that it is more important than ever to tow that line. Her mom though wants to see her live her life for her not for her father. Joshua has one foot in two different sides of the tracks. His father is rich and his mom well she owns her own dinner in town, so people look at her as less than. He has never felt that she was less than in anything she has done including giving him his morals. When he is out delivering food one night though he meets the woman that will change his life. All it takes is one other night to change things for both of them. Will they get the HEA they both crave so much or will the influence of others make that impossible?
This is a book that will have you taking an emotional roller-coaster rider you don’t want to get off of. This author writes books that have you finishing it and feeling like you just went through it all with your best friend. It does have its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However I don’t want to ruin this story for anyone. I have to say this book makes you want to find that special love and never let it go because things can change in an instant. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Chloe has her life planned out and doesn’t have time for anything but school. That is until she unexpectedly meets Joshua. Joshua is a hardworking guy who is trying to better his life until the unexpected happens. Will Chloe let him in?
“It was a mistake to pretend we could be together, like we were special, and our worlds wouldn’t collide in tragic ways…”
It’s being a while since a book has manage to break my heart in such a sweet way and rebuilt it in such a strong manner, this book is every romance dream; it is full of drama, love, and great characters.
They got caught on a battle neither of them could win, fate was cruel with their love and just like tragic love stories, they were from different worlds where money and position makes all the difference between happily ever after and tragic ending.
Chloe Fox has one goal and that is medical school, which would make her father proud and even at the cost of throwing away her dreams just to have the approval of the famous Dr Fox is all she has in mind while attending Yale; that is until one boy manages to crash in her perfect world and makes her reevaluate every single emotion she’s ever had…
Joshua Evans is the boy who doesn’t get anything easy, he’s working his way to the top; while attending Yale he’s also the delivery guy for his mother’s Dinner, so while making a delivery to Chloe’s front door, he come across with the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen, and even with one look, he can tell she is innocent and maybe she needs him to show her how to live fearlessly so she can figure out who she really is.
They didn’t plan it, they just fell for each other, and in their own way found a new world together but love sometimes is not enough and maybe what they were once is forever lost. Tragic, romantic, sweet…and somehow, I know that I am short of words for this beautiful story!!!
“We’ve been each other’s days, but we don’t end in sunsets or only exist come sunrise. We’ve become the hours in between–twilight and dawn, the brightest noon, the darkest midnight, the golden hours. Together, we’re all hours with hearts on fire.”
” She’s coincidences and destiny.”
We Were Once is the latest heartbreakingly beautiful second chance romance from author S.L. Scott. This book delivers all of the feels and emotion and is sure to leave readers begging for more….
We Were Once follows the story of Joshua and Chloe. From the moment you meet these two characters, you are immediately drawn into their story. Their chemistry and banter is easily off the charts. Chloe, who’s life has always been planned for her, finds her life turned upside down. For her, Joshua is a breath of fresh air who is showing her that there’s more to life than just studying. To the outside world, Joshua and Chloe shouldn’t make sense, but somehow, they just do. They had it all and were on top of the world….that is until one night forever changed their course. Can love truly conquer all??? There’s only one way to find out…..
We Were Once was exactly the read I was looking for. It was sweet. It was swoon-worthy. It was utterly captivating. Chloe and Joshua’s story put my emotions through the ringer and I loved every single second of it. Chloe and Joshua are the kind of couple that just can’t help but root for. They loved mad and they loved hard. They had the kind of love that is worth fighting for and I for one couldn’t wait to see just how their story was going to play out…
We Were Once is everything that a second chance romance should be. It’s filled with angst and drama and frustration. It’s filled with moments that make you swoon and fall utterly in love. And at the end of the day, it is a story that will consume you and leave you believing in love.
If you’re a fan of second chance romances, I hope you’ll check out We Were Once and that you will fall head over heels for Joshua & Chloe, as I have.

If there is one book that you need to pick up it is We Were Once. I really wish I could give this one more then 5 stars. It is my favorite book of the year so far. He owned me, made me swoon and then some. I really couldn’t get enough of him. I love his banter with Chloe. Those two bring a smile to my face just thinking about them.
