We were never supposed to fall in love. We did it anyway.New York Times bestselling author, S.L. Scott, crafts her signature heartfelt style into an epic and emotional, second chance, standalone romance. I have three goals: graduate from an Ivy League university, get into medical school, and follow in my father’s well-established footsteps. Everything was going exactly as planned until the local … planned until the local bad boy was delivered to my doorstep. Literally.
From the moment we meet, my old life becomes unrecognizable, but I have no regrets. I’m utterly captivated by him. His smirk. His heart. His sharp wit. He pushes me to live, to be wild, to pursue the dream I’ve always hidden inside.
To the rest of the world, we make no sense.
Me, the girl from the gilded New England coast.
Joshua, from the small city of New Haven.
To us, we’re destiny.
Together, we had it all. Desperately. Madly. In love.
Until we didn’t.
One tragic night changed everything.

My first read but most definitely not my last. S.L. Scott had me glued to the pages of this book. The emotional ride she takes you on through this book will leave you in tears at times and so angry that you want to scream. This book will keep you enthralled from start to finish.
Chloe has lived a life of privilege but it has never been her life, her dreams that she has lived. Her dream is to be an ER doctor but that is not the dream that her father has set for her.
Senior year at the Ivy League college she attends, her goals are within reach but fate steps in when she meets the local bad boy (or is he?).
He brings her alive, he challenges her, he is everything she is not.
They don’t make sense to anyone else but together they are unstoppable.
Tragedy strikes and pushes them apart. What will happen to their dreams, their desires, their love?
S.L. Scott kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end! It was an amazingly beautiful story, filled with true romance and warm inviting characters that you will grow to love as well.
Love can be beautiful and brutal all at once!
We Were Once is a second chance romance that will melt your heart one minute and devastate it the next. Its a true testament to the adage “time heals all wounds”.
Joshua and Chloe are from two very different worlds, two worlds that just don’t go together. Defying the odds their attraction is instantaneous, a connection felt deep in the soul (soulmates). They come together like two perfect pieces of a puzzle that makes its complete.
Influences from one world will ultimately destroy the other in an act of cruel fate. Both will have to find the strength to move forward, but the pain of the past will always be there. There chosen paths obliterated by a cruel turn of events that will see them both take different paths in the future. Unknowingly though they will take the paths that leads them back to each other, but are they strong enough to overcome the heartache and pain that took them away from each other?
S.L Scott has a beauty to her words and the story they tell. She is a master of the emotional push and pull that has you on the edge of your seat, grabbing the tissues and drowning in the sadness, then in the next breath has your heart bursting with joy and happiness.
This is one book that is a roller coaster of emotions but one I can guarantee you will enjoy.
What an intense book!
4,5 star.
We can always expect a lot of emotions from this author, and this book did not let me down. On the very opposite, there were so many feelings, it was a rollercoaster of emotions.
The plot surrounded me and I couldn’t desingage from Joshua and Chloe. They seemed so different at first, but they connected so beautifully, they had so much in common and they had wonderful chemistry. I just couldn’t put the book down.
It was such a deep and incredible journey.
There is nothing better than a second chance romance when it is done well and wioth feeling and the author delievrs on that with Chloe and Joshua’s story. We first meet them as they fall in love and against all expectations, I loved their interactions and the way it was written. It was so easy to get swept away in the unfolding love story S.L. captured the feelings and emotions so perfectly that the fall came it was shocking and unexpected but she does it so well. Chloe may start the story as an idealistic slightly naive young woman but watching her growth throughout the story made me cheer her on. It is hard to describe the impact life has on Joshua without giving away the story but I adored him and his strength. The other characters are beyond amazing the mums and Ruby add so much to this beautiful story.
Great story about second chances, finding your soulmate, and working your way back to each other, because that’s how it’s meant to be. A parent can try to keep you away from your love, but love will prove a stronger element in this story that was so well written, it will pull at all your emotions. This Second-Chance Romance had everything I desire in a story and pulled at my heartstrings from start to finish. I’m a total believer in first loves staying with you forever and “We Were Once” restored my faith in that belief. Even though it is a long story, I never once felt it dragging or not moving forward. I loved every word and found it hard to put down. The main characters, Chloe and Joshua wove their way into my soul right from chapter one and left me craving more. There isn’t an emotion I didn’t feel or show. I smiled and laughed, cried a few tears, and cursed at a few characters. To sum it up, I was swept away in a phenomenal romance and I never wanted it to end.
Author S.L. Scott did a wonderful job telling this story of two soul mates surviving the storm. Rich girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks who shows her how to come alive and live the life she desires. They weren’t supposed to fall in love, but they did anyway. The way the author was able to bring their emotions and feelings to life through her words made this story explode with all the feels. Not once did I question their fast-paced relationship or the choices they made – until of course, the tragic turn of events.
Even though I knew it was coming, the blurb did warn me, I was stunned at the resulting events. We Were Once was an amazing story that can only be thoroughly enjoyed by reading. If you’re looking for a second chance romance to spark up your days, light your nights on fire, and make you wear your heart on your sleeve, this is definitely the book you want to grab. Author S.L. Scott continues to blow my mind with her phenomenal words and I’ll always be waiting for more of her stories.
We Were Once is the most heartbreaking, the most intense, the most soul-shaking and the most romantic book I have read in a long time, if not ever.
It tore me wide open, ripped my heart, shattered me, mind and soul, and put me back together. It changed me in ways I never thought possible, and even as I write this review, I feel all emotional again.
There is intimacy in those words and between those pages, giving an insight into Chloe and Josh’s hearts and souls, that made me feel like an intruder. I felt almost shy while reading about their love and definitly broke into a million pieces when fate struck…
I will move on, somehow, but it won’t be easy. These characters will stay with me, will occupy my mind for a very long time. This book is pure poetry, an ode to love and life and its wicked ways, and a reminder that true love is meant to overcome all obstacles.
This book is a gem … one of a kind in a sea of books!
I have to admit the cover hooked me right off the bat. But the title scared me because I just knew my heart was going to be put through a roller coaster of emotions…..I was right. SL Scott could rewrite the phone book amd turn it into a 5 star read!! This is my favorite book of 2020 and a must have for all of you! No matter the circumstances, Chloe and Joshua prove that LOVE anchors it all. Pick up your copy today.S. L. Scott
Such an incredible read with all the feels.
I loved this book! I highly recommend this book. This was the first story I had read from this author and after I read it I went and read some of her other books. If you come across this book do not hesitate to read it. You won’t be sorry!
Man this book broke me in so many ways, but I truly loved how it built me back.

I’m always told while reading a book that the two main characters have such great chemistry and very rarely do I ever feel that chemistry. That is not the case with this story. I felt it.
I’ve read plenty of new adult romances and have gotten mad due to unnecessary drama. Nope, not with this one. I did however get emotionally angry that I had to put the book down to calm myself. A bomb was dropped unexpectedly halfway through the story and all I thought was, great here comes the long dragged out drama I was so sure I wasn’t going to get with this book. I mean, here I am 50% in thinking this is going so great, why the hell would you go and f’k it up now. But guess what? NO UNNECESSARY DRAMA! If there was a fight or misunderstanding they nipped it in the bud right then and there. Not days or weeks later.
This book had the right amount of angst, drama, and a whole lot of chemistry, and that, to me, is a 5 star read!
4,75 stars!!!
I think I’ve never read a book by this author so when I read the blurb I was in at the moment when I read “second-chance”. Second chances books are my jam. I love them. I don’t know if it is because I went back to my first love too many times to count (lol) or because I just love the idea of one true love or whatever.
Either way, I didn’t know what I was getting into when I decided to give this book a chance. I don’t regret it. At all. Giving this book almost too much of my beauty sleep was worth it. It was and I’m gonna tell you why.
Here we are with one of those love stories that you wished you have lived in your life and at the same you wish you didn’t, and why is that?
Because this kind of love is so freaking intense and so so much that when you don’t have it anymore, your whole world crumbles and you in it. Is that intense.
Chloe and Josh’s love was just like that. They were 20 and 21 respectively and not even that age warned them about not falling in love so deeply and so so fast. They were reckless and so naive in some way. But not in a bad way. It was totally the opposite. They were reckless and naivenly in love. They weren’t mean to fall in love with each other. They weren’t even mean to meet each other. Josh stormed into Chloe’s life without a warning or a sign. They were so different but at the same so meant to be. Their chemistry, the way they would look at each other even after just a week of knowing one another. You wouldn’t even believe it was real. But it was. They were real and they were so in love.
After just a month of being together they knew that what they were feeling wasn’t normal. However, Chloe always believed in quality rather than in quantity (time). She was following her dreams of becoming a good doctor and he was trying to have a better life so he can provide to his mother that was doing just fine, but being only him and his mom brought dreams about owning more than just a dinner and being more than what everyone wanted them to be because of their reputation -which wasn’t good-. Everyone wanted to see Joshua fail in live just like his mom did -according to that people, that didn’t think twice on speaking their minds without a care in the world. That’s the kind of world that we live in, isn’t it?
Everything was going okay until it wasn’t. And they fell apart and didn’t see each other until six years later that by a coincidence, their paths met again. Fate?, destiny? Maybe but whatever it was it just proved that what they had was real and that they were meant to be together even if all the odds were against them.
The tears, the laugh, the anger and kinda something similar to grief are the feelings that you go through with this book. It was definitely a tough ride but something that I needed to read. I love these kind of love stories. And in this book? Man, you can almost feel the attraction and the chemistry of the main characters as if they were with you and you were witnessing their falling in front row.
I highly recommend this book if you’re up to read something so intense as their love story. I didn’t give it full 5 stars because I felt like something was missing just after half the book (when they reunited), there were some scenes that I didn’t understand why it happened that way but mostly, it was such a good book that it pained me to not give it more stars. Either way, it’s exceptional, and so amazing that probably would leave me with a book slump. It’s shocking because I wasn’t expecting this. I was expecting something so different, I had just dfned a book before grabbing this one so I was probably thinking that the same would happen. But it didn’t and I’m so happy for it. I’m going put some highlights visibles just in case you want to read them.

In We Were Once S.L. Scott writes an incredible romance about finding love and yourself while having to make really tough and painful choices for the ones you love. I devoured this story in one sitting. I was completely swept up in the whirlwind romance when Chloe and Josh meet in the first half of the story. This story is phenomenal. So much heat, emotion, passion and angst, I couldn’t get enough. I laughed, I cried, I swooned. Every emotion I want to feel when I read or listen to a romance story I felt here and then some. This book must be experienced by all romance readers.u2063

It doesn’t matter how many books I listen to narrated by Sebastian York and Andi Arndt I can never get enough of them. They narrate the voices of Josh and Chloe perfectly. I love the way they each bring so much passion and emotion to these characters.
WE WERE ONCE is a very emotional epic love story. It is Joshua Evans and Chloe Fox that have a instant love attraction. They met when he delivered chicken and dumplings to her apartment door. They were ordered by Chloe’s mother from the diner owned by Joshua’s mom. When Joshua saw her bonsai plant named Frankie, and he had a bonsai plant at his place named Dwayne Evans. He was sure that fate had brought them together. She might have been a harder sell, since she had a strict controlling father. Her father wanted her to spend all her time studying, and to become a famous surgeon like himself. Their attraction was too big to ignore. They had a love bigger than the universe. They were soul mates. Their life was good together, they felt they would always feel this wild in love. No one could touch them. Except a father’s need to control his daughter.
Joshua and Chloe had a once-in-a-lifetime love. It was so wonderful, I was reading and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Yet, with a love and bond this strong, it would weather time, miles, and tragedy. They were still chasing the moon. It all comes back to them, because “We were once…”
Chloe opens her door to love…
So many feels. I found myself savoring this book. I didn’t want it to end.
Joshua & Chloe meet purely by chance. He’s the delivery guy. She never expected him in her life. She has a plan and he isn’t part of it.
But Joshua helps her find her own path. Not the one her father expects from her.
They are in their own bubble of love. Her mother and his love them together. He opens her eyes to actually living her life.
Sadly, they’re from different worlds. She is the good girl from a good family and has everything. Although, her father expects her to follow in his footsteps and he will do things that change everything that Joshua and Chloe thought was going to happen.
One night changes the trajectory of their entire life.
I love their story. Their fairytale love story. After all, things aren’t all smooth and easy in a fairytale.
Chloe and Joshua both are tempered by the fire. They, and their love, eventually come out of the fire stronger than before.
S.L. gives us all the heat, passion, angst, and feels we expect. Love conquers all.
Just like Frankie and Dwayne, their love flourishes!
I hope we get a story for Ruby!!
I received a review copy. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Josh and Chloe were destined to meet and fall in love. He is a townie, from the other side of the tracks, yet smart enough to be a student at Yale. There’s a lifelong issue with his father, and it’s a terribly sad story. Chloe looks beyond his circumstances and sees him for the man he really is. Chloe is a brilliant student, graduating from high school early and setting her sights on becoming an ER doctor. Her issues with her own father are just as life-changing and even more damaging. Chloe and Joshua couldn’t have been more endearing or better-suited for one another. His witty, good natured and laid back character is the perfect complement to Chloe’s uptight and laser-focused attitude toward life. The pain she endures from her father’s unflinching need for control is the only thing that holds her back from being her best self. Josh is a balm to her suffering from the day he first delivered chicken and dumplings to her door from his family’s restaurant. But it isn’t enough to keep him from being the target of sabotage from a father who has a plan for his daughter that does not include him. It’s simply not possible to read this emotional story without becoming completely invested in Josh and Chloe, hoping that they can cut through their doubt after years apart, and establish a new and better life together. The simmering and explosive chemistry between Josh and Chloe kept me turning the pages. But if I’m honest, I have to admit to a terrible crush on Josh by the end of the story. I could not put this down. It had everything going for it. A character showcase for vibrant personalities, a pace that doesn’t break stride or lose focus from the first page to the last and an ending and epilogue that are tightly woven and beautifully done!
