Having really enjoyed the first book in the series, I was looking forward to Wayfarer. A little surprising, this novel is related to the first but not really a sequel. Each boom can be read as a standalone. This works well though, because it proves there is more story to be told in this world.
Wayfarer drew out a wide range of emotions from me. I was very frustrated with the character’s choices and ultimately the consequences of those choices. I think Janalyn Voigt is a great author and she has written a really compelling Christian Fantasy. She has written some intriguing characters and has no problem shocking her readers.
Wayfarer is filled with familiar and new characters and creatures. It’s a lovely epic fantasy and I definitely recommend checking it out.

Wow, this series just gets better and better! You will need 5 Full, Hot Cups of Tea for WayFarer by Janalyn Voigt! Once again Kai whom we met in book one is on another adventure to protect Faeraven. If you love a good fantasy about the Fae then this is the tale for you! Voigt’ world-building is just amazing, her writing makes you feel as if you are watching it on the big screen, you truly feel a part of the journey!
My second visit to Faeraven was much more comfortable than the first as by the end of Dawnsinger, I became familiar with the vernacular and Jenalyn Voigt’s story world and the cadence of her writing. Wayfarer isn’t exactly a sequel to the first book, more a continuation of the tales Voigt weaves. Kai and Shae take a step back and Elcon (the newly appointed Lof Shraen, or as I thought of him, the high king) gets his time in the spotlight.
This second book is a complete contrast to the sacrifices Shae and Kai made in book one. Too often Elcon makes selfish choices with no thought of the consequences. But when those consequences come, they are devastating.
The allegory in this book is deeply entrenched and abundantly clear when held up to scripture of living for the flesh versus living for the spirit.
Voigt left me both satisfied with the ending of Wayfarer but wanting more because of the unanswered questions remaining. And when I read the synopsis of the upcoming release (Sojourner), I have even more.

Wayfarer is the continuation of the Tales of Faeraven series and did stand on its own pretty well. It has been a long time since I read DawnSinger but I still remember being shocked at the ending.
Wayfarer picks up with Lof Shraen Elcon (a ruler/prince) and shows the results of his faulty decisions, especially when receiving advice from the wrong person. I also thought that maybe power had gone to his head and unfortunately promises are unkept and hearts are broken as consequences.
Elcon falls in love with a princess he was not meant to be with for many reasons. Their story is rife with problems but I do see that they loved each other very much.
This is a fantasy story set in a medieval like setting with fantastical beasts. It is also a story of political intrigue, war, and hard lessons learned. I was quite fascinated that the prophecy that all were looking to be fulfilled, and the one who fulfilled the prophecy was not believed. It certainly mirrors our spiritual culture today and of our pasts.
I look forward to more of this fantasy line with deep truths and hard lessons played out in a world different than our own.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
