Somewhere between Oz and Narnia, and not that far from the little alley that takes you to Hogwart’s, is a beautiful island called Wraidd Elfennol. The way that Rick Riordan brings to life the traditions of the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Norse, Morgan Sheppard pulls her readers into the not so forgotten world of the Welsh, where magic is a way of life, and nature is something strong and powerful that must be kept in order. With strong characters and magnificent details, Sheppard takes her readers on an odyssey that leaves them laughing, gasping, and begging for more. A story that appeals to old and young alike, Water Weaver is as educational as it is page turning as it follows young and gifted Marella on her journey to discover who she is and what she is made of when she and the other Chosen of Wraidd Elfennol must travel to mystical lands in a desperate attempt to save their tranquil world from all the harm that can come from a world out of balance. Sheppard does her own weaving as she blends humor, fact, and poignant life lessons into a piece that reads like an articulate friend telling you a fascinating story in front of a cozy fire. She had hooked me with Marella, the first book in this series, but now I am an addict. Water Weaver is an extraordinary read that leaves you craving exotic foods, a warm cup of tea, and her next book.
Loved this story! Water Weaver pulled me in immediately. I could easily see the world Ms. Sheppard brought to the readers, even more by time I hit Chapter 2, which went into detail of the festival. Very colorful, and I felt like I was right there. The way the characters thought and went about their lives definitely had you reminded that you had your nose stuck into an alternate world of magic and mystery.
I haven’t ready many young adult novels, but I have to say that the author captured the essence of young people with volatile emotions turning them one way and then suddenly flipping to another mindset. Very true to their age and maturity level. This was evidenced by the chastising they received from the Lord and Ladies early in the book. It was interesting watching the youngsters battle their own internal angst and coming to grip with their feelings before they had to deal with much larger things. I was happy to see that they became comfortable with each other and were able to work so well as a team while uncovering clues and using their strengths.
I laugh now, but I didn’t like Kai at first. He was so arrogant, but he redeemed himself, especially when he used the partner bonds and spoke with Marella to calm her when flying on the Roc. Loved the twist at the end that revealed the culprit that was causing them grief along their journey. Didn’t see that one coming! It was enjoyable watching these four youngsters grow closer and Marella becoming a strong woman. I was definitely Team Kai at the very end. I was grinning as I read the Epilogue. Loved it!
What a wonderful YA story! Full of adventure, overcoming adversity, triumph, and well-developed characters to love. Looks like there might be more to come within this wonderfully woven world. Well done!
P.S. I gave this a 5 Star way before I saw the author’s shout out to me in the Afterword. Thank you! Glad to have helped! xoxo
This book has certainly earned the #Epic tag – at over 600 pages this is a book that you can submerge yourself into. However, it certainly doesn’t feel like that amount when you are reading it as the pages almost turn themselves as the story carries you along.
The characters are all well-developed and grow throughout the story as they have to learn how to work together, using and acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses. There are not only the four human main characters, but also we have four animal Life Partners too, who all have their own individual characters and quirks.
With a smooth and flowing pace and a gentle tone, this book is suitable for all ages, with no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes that I noticed. Highly recommended.
* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. *
