This chronicle of the 106th Infantry Division follows the unit into the Battle of the Bulge and recounts the stories of GIs who fought–even after capture. On December 16, 1944, as the European conflict of World War II was reaching its climax at the Battle of the Bulge, the 106th Infantry Division was fresh, green, and right in the pathway of the Fifth German Army. Warriors of the 106th … Army. Warriors of the 106th chronicles the movements and combat operations of this significant unit while sharing individual stories of the heroism and sacrifice of these young Americans in the face of overwhelming odds.
From this division alone, 6,800 men were taken prisoner. But their stories didn’t end there. For the ones who miraculously escaped, there was a battle to fight. With remarkable courage, they survived debilitating weather conditions and fought a determined enemy with superior numbers. And despite all adversity, they eventually prevailed.
One 106th GI waged his own personal war using guerilla tactics that caused serious consternation amongst the German troops. Another GI’s main concern was recovering his clean underwear. These stories are heartwarming, heartbreaking, nerve-wracking, and compelling. Warriors of the 106th puts readers on the front lines and in the stalags during the final months of WWII.

This book gave a very good perspective many times in the words of the members of the 106th Division as to what green troops went through during the Battle of the Bulge.
“Warriors” gives both a detailed account of the trials of the 106th and its sister units and a balanced perspective of its contributions to the war effort. It includes the personal stories of many of the US soldiers who suffered on the Snee Eifel during the Battle of the Bulge and in the German Stalags and Arbeitkommando details as POWs afterward.
Always interesting to read the stories of our citizen-soldiers, but this one was a bit disjointed and difficult to follow.
This was a very interesting history of the 106th and the entire Battle of the Bulge. The first-hand reports and stories made it much more fascinating, too, as did the few pictures included.
I did notice a few typo-type errors, though nothing major, plus I found it confusing trying to keep all the names and units straight with where they were on the battlefield, otherwise I’d give it 5 Stars. I wish there had been more maps showing where each event took place, as trying to keep all that straight also added to my confusion. The only map on my Kindle version was at the beginning, which showed the 106th Division’s location on Dec. 15, just prior to the battle. It probably would have also helped to keep a list of characters and units beside me while I read.
Still, even with those criticisms I feel this book is a very worthwhile addition for any WWII bookshelf. The authors did an amazing job digging up the stories of these soldiers and then putting the entire thing together. Very recommended.
Very informational, my older brother was wounded fighting in the battle of the bulge so I was very interested in learning about that campaign. I was NOT dissapointed! Good detail of the action. Highly recommend to any and all WWII history buffs.
Very interesting discussion of the activities that this division were involved in during WWII.
Great history lesson for those with WW2 military interests
A different perspective of the battle of the bulge from those read or in movies. An untrained division attacked by overwhelming force and the confusion and results of the action. You really need a map to follow the actions.
Excellent
This is a fine historical book on the battle of the bulge.I never read any history detailing
this battle as well documented as this book is.
I understand that we lost more people here then in Normandy, yet most historians have concentrated on D-DAY instead.
It can be a slow read, however it does cover a perspective of the “Battle of the Bulge” not covered well.
My father fought in the Battle of the Bulge. But, like many servicemen/women who were in combat, he never spoke of his service. After reading this story, I can understand why he had PTSD and didn’t want to recall this. It is an epic tale of bravery under unbelievable conditions. I salute all those who put their lives on the line so that we can enjoy our freedoms today!
Not bad, and some interesting reminiscences, but writing is just okay and I had to push myself to finish it.
