No one grounds a barbarian warrior.Qulpa, a Chamele warrior, lost everyone he loved in the brutal Succession Wars. Flying is the only thing that brings him joy. Serving as his team’s pilot is the sole duty he has left. Then a horrific crash leaves him injured and unable to fly. The one being who can help him is also his gerel, the female destined to be his. She insists she doesn’t feel their … doesn’t feel their connection. Qulpa is certain his beautiful mate is lying and nothing will stop him from finding out why.
Nayan knows the injured barbarian is her warrior, her one chance at a forever bond. His dominance makes her feel safe. His gentle touch inflames her passion. His kisses scorch her very soul. The tall muscular male tempts her as no one else has.
But she has a deadly secret. If it’s exposed, her injured male will lose more than his ability to fly. Both of them will die. She can’t take that risk, not for him, not for them, not for a lifespan filled with love.

Qulpa lost everything in the Succession Wars. Flying is the only thing left that brings him joy but after being injured in a horrible crash he doesn’t know if he will ever fly again. Meeting his mate, Nayan, is the last thing he expects.
This was a very good start for a new series. Qulpa is an older male who has given up on ever finding a mate. Right when he thinks he is losing everything he loves, he finds Nayan the Head of Ship and Weapons Design. Nayan is extremely smart and is great with machines. She spends her time in the lab building new weapons and ships with only her robots as friends. She is hiding a secret that keeps her on the outskirts of Chamele society. I loved Nayan, and her machines, from the very beginning. She was a genius with machines and surprisingly dangerous when she needs to be.
“You’re my home, the sanctuary I would die to protect, the ground I touch down on after every flight, the source of my happiness, my strength, my present and my future. There’s no one in the universe like you, and I’m awestruck I’m the fortunate warrior to hold you every rest cycle.”
Qulpa and Nayan’s relationship, while a fated mate one, isn’t instantaneous. Nayan’s past has made her leery of trusting anyone and that makes her push him away in the beginning. I liked that Qulpa had to woo her and win her trust. I made their relationship stronger because they knew they could count on each other.
Overall, this was a great couple and a great start to this new series. I am very interested in learning more about the Chamele worlds and culture. Hopefully we will see more of Nayan and her little bots in future books.
I’m a new reader to Cynthia Sax’s series, and I’m hooked. I bought and read not only the Warlord series but the connecting Cyborg series as well. I recommend new readers to read them in order and enjoy how they connect.
Great series! Enjoyed the story line and the characters.
Wasn’t a bad short story.
Entertaining read!
Good read by an excellent author.
Great characters who deserve a great story, Qulpa and Nayan are an odd couple, but they are perfect for each other. I really enjoyed this story with the genius girl who hides in plain sight and a guy who’d given up on ever finding his “one”. The plot moves forward at a nice clip with action, fighting and relationship both, and great characters that continue to grow on you as you move through it with them!
I think I’ve read this before…
Warlord Sky is actually a pretty good book on its own. So why only three stars? I have to say that I’m a devoted fan of Cynthia Sax’s wildly rough and sexy Cyborg Sizzle series, with its uniquely bio-mechanical POV, pan-galactic species-inclusive vocabulary, and well-built universe-at-war setting. Chamele warlords are not cyborgs, but darned if they don’t act, think, and sound just like the Cyborg characters. Identically styled and underpinned by identical themes of diversity, prejudice, and social change based on a minority-lead shift in core values, the book marches to the same drumbeat as the earlier series. Fine, they’re great and noble themes and all, but a writer as capable of originality as Ms. Sax can surely do better, yeah? I am so disappointed.
I very much enjoyed this first book in her new series. I thought the hero and heroine were exceptional and as usual the author doesn’t stint on the grittiness of her world, tempered by romance (and oh-so-hot steamy scenes between the main characters).
I was so thrilled when Qulpa’s book came across my kindle.
Qulpa’s an older Chamele warrior.
Nayan is a Chamele that happened to be born different. So glad this couple was made for each other and could look past each others differences. What a wonderful couple. You could feel them click as soon as they met even though Nayan was fighting it to protect Qulpa.
I highly recommend this book.
I love all the new worlds coming together bit by bit. I also truly love in all the anguish of war that these warriors look and strive for love. Family whether it’s born or made is everything to them.
A splendid new story with the Chamele warriors!
What can I say? The emotions elicited by Ms. Sax’s characters are deep. I feel the anguish of a young child being bullied and battered, the pull of a warrior to his gerel, the relief of a woman who can trust her innermost secrets with her mate, the satisfaction of acceptance from others…
I love Nayan’s hard-won strength and the way she puts her own needs into creating designs that benefit not only her, but her Warlord and his people. Qulpa is wonderful! He’s suffered great losses and now counts his team members as his family (there’s room for more). Qulpa is romantic: “He had touched her systems, revved her engines, found joy in handling her vessel…” He never wavers in his pursuit of his gerel, placing her needs before all else. Although there aren’t many things being blown up, the explosive anger of a warrior seeking retribution for harm to his gerel is a sight to behold!
Awesome writing, highly recommended!
WARLORD SKY is book one in Cynthia Sax’s Chamele Barbarian Warlord series, a spin-off of The Refuge series. I was eagerly awaiting this story, it exceeded all my expectations. WARLORD SKY takes place on Chamele 2, and Qulpa, a Chamele warrior, is flying home. It should have been an eventless flight, but their ship was unexpectedly attacked, and crashed on the home planet. Qulpa’s family and close friends all died in the Succession Wars, he has one thing left: being a pilot. But he is injured in the attack, and might not be able to fly ever again. There is but a shadow of hope when Nayan – the revered Head of Ship and Weapons Design – who has been summoned to investigate the crash – suggests that she might be able to help him. It is sheer torture for Qulpa to be near Nayan, because she is his gerel – his one and only genetically compatible life mate – and she refuses to admit it.
Oh my goodness, this is such an exciting new world! While reading, I almost felt like jumping up and down, because it’s just that exhilarating and clever, and so much fun! Nayan’s fabulous “team” of bots and drones is genius! Nayan lives in her laboratory because she has a secret; she keeps away from other beings. But Qulpa is utterly smitten, and he is a wonderful hero; I just loved him to bits! He’s a big, tough guy, but so caring and gentle; he made my heart melt. And Nayan is not a helpless little female; she is the best at what she does, and respected; she is a heroine I can relate to. The chemistry between Nayan and Qulpa is electric, explosive, and yet there is so much tenderness – and scorching moments! Cynthia Sax knows how to write a real alpha male; her heroes are never selfish jerks, and Qulpa might be my favourite ever. WARLORD SKY is a terrific story, sad and joyful, very romantic, and one particular moment had me laughing out loud. And who was that mysterious man … What a fabulous series this is going to be!
