From the bestselling author of ‘Unrelenting’ comes the heartbreaking first-in-series, War Girls: Ursula, a harrowing tale of courage and conscience, love and survival under the Third Reich.
In Berlin, 1943, compassion is a crime.
Newlywed Ursula Hermann is a simple woman, wanting nothing more than an end to the war and the return of her husband from the Russian front.
But some things are not … and the return of her husband from the Russian front.
But some things are not meant to be.
The authorities determine that Ursula’s contribution to the war effort is to guard a prison for undesirables and political prisoners.
Then, the unthinkable happens. A prisoner, Royal Air Force pilot Tom Westlake escapes, and Ursula looks the other way. If her single act of mercy is discovered, her life is forfeit.
When the injured airman returns, seeking her help, it is her opportunity to turn over the enemy and save herself from destruction. In a world where right has become wrong, and wrong has become right, Ursula must make a decision: obey the fatherland, or follow her conscience.

I enjoyed this book and wondered how I would have dealt with what Ursula was confronted with.
Short but sweet. It had more relationship less historical drama.
I just finished this easy to read book and … see that it is the first in a series about War Girls. The characters were well developed and very much living as they always behaved. Ursula is then put into a circumstance where she must make choices contrary to her nature and … it was a difficult and a rewarding time for her. I can see that living in a time of war can change how we would normally act and bring us to make decisions we wouldn’t normally make. I highly recommend this book.
The author shows you a human side of a very true and gruesome part of real human history that most times are lost when discussions of WWII are presented:
This was an intriguing book! Based on true happenings made it all the more fascinating. It also shows Hitler wasn’t loved by every German!
Good historical fiction
It was a page turner. However, I thought the ending was a bit abrupt.
I’m a sucker for historical fiction. I’ve learned a great deal about well researched history this way!
I loved the book very well written. And a book I had to continue reading.
Sad, but true.
I liked this book quite a bit…..a very believable story and I liked the characters enough that I bought the next book telling what happened to the main characters.
I couldn’t put it down.
Thought provoking
a fun read to open the mind to life from the other side of the great wars. what you knew, thought felt. Great thought put into how your actions today can impact your future.
Interesting and informative. Good combination
Made me consider how I would have acted in these circumstances.
I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it. If only the next book in the series had been free also!
I liked reading a first hand account about the Germany with Nazis ruling and warring. It ended weird. Wanted to see what was going to happen and how it could happen. Instead it just ended. Leaving a taste of wanting more.
The next book was about hers sister and I didnt order it because I didnt want to be left hanging again.
I am now on book 9 in this series about this family in WWIi, so that should tell you how much I like this author
Ursula’s story of being torn between love of country and love of a man tore at my heart. I wondered if I’d have the same kind of strength Ursula had if I was in the same situation; I concluded that I don’t think I would.
