Jess was born a prisoner, grew up a prisoner and at sixteen knew he would die a prisoner. When his turn comes to try to break through the traps protecting a spaceship it seems his day to die has come. The ship, and others like it, have already claimed hundreds of prisoners’ lives.
Instead he manages to avoid the traps and gain access to the ship with two other prisoners, beginning a frantic … frantic flight to freedom. Soon Jess finds himself loose in a brutal universe ruled by the Empire and riddled with pirates, slave traders and worse. Can Jess manage to learn the rules of the universe and the capabilities of the ship he has stolen in time to stay alive?

Great story build. Author very creative in supporting characters and deception. My read is part of three book deal but wanted to let others in on a good book. Can’t wait to get into second book.
Excellent story! This book belongs firmly to the best tradition of the Space Opera genre with a clever angle to some social themes. Although the story settings are traditional (galactic empire, space pirates) there is an alien element (and I mean it, literally) that is very original and that makes the plot very enjoyable to read. I am looking …
A time where tyrants rule and freedom is rare. Slaves are made to work and what ever task the masters declare under threat of pain from “control” collars.
The writing is simple, none of the tech jargon that can confuse young readers. I do not recommend this for the young readers who are too young for sex to be mentioned.
Truthfully, I struggled …
Decent science fiction, probably excellent for young adults (younger protagonist finding love and sex and his own morality)
It’s an okay sci-fi adventure. The Plot is interesting, but the characters are underdeveloped and hard to care about.
A fun Sci Fi that reminds me of the Firefly tv series. Lots of adventures with a fun group of charectors. Not quite as light hearted as firefly but a good read and of course i went on the rest of the series. I must find out the end.
Having fun reading the book, can’t put it down
Thank you
the book stutters between fairly good and pretty bad. Trying to reinvent superman as a ship that is subservient to an adolescent with pimples is a task tried by many but mastered by none
My best book this pandemic
The story exhibits competent writing and solid descriptions of setting and action. The plot motivator was a good idea. The characters are its weakness.
Not your normal space opera. This one has twists and turns that keep you guessing what will happen next. I enjoyed the lead character and wanted to closely follow his exploits. I couldn’t decide whether the other characters were an annoyance to the story or gave the story depth. In the end, I stopped worrying about it and went along for the ride.
A bit juvenile but still enjoyable
Great start to a space opera series
A great adventure into what could be possible and the limitations of the darker side of humanity….
Looking forward to the next installment.
milk a premise until it was dry, then milk it again
Excellent read!
I love the character development especially the sentient ship.
Can’t wait to read the next books in the series!
Had to see the next page
I have to admit that I didn’t finish this book. I got halfway through and gound myself unable to continue.
Great book. Can’t wait to read the sequel.
