What difference does it make that Jesus was Jewish?
In this ebook download of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges readers to follow their Rabbi more closely by re-examining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We’ll begin to … begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands.
Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today?
In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we’ll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus’ day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we’ll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus’ time have borne fruit over time. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi’s teachings from a Jewish point of view.

This book is amazing. It opened my eyes to a new understanding of so many passages in the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments. It changed many of my perceptions. I promptly purchased the book that came before it, Sitting in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, as well as the book that was published after it, Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus. Highly recommended, especially to serious students of the Bible.
This book helps us understand Jesus within his Jewish context, which is necessary to be able to obey his teaching as he intended. This includes unpacking the background of culture and language, a cross-cultural adventure that brings the gospels to life.
Christians who want to understand the culture surrounding Jesus would like this book. It explains why Jesus was who he was, the life he would have lived as a Jewish man. I learned a lot from reading this book.
The cultural background of Jesus’ earthly ministry has greatly enhanced my understanding of the scriptures.
This book is very insightful in taking you back to Jewish culture of the time, providing a much deeper understanding to the ministry and message of Jesus. I lead a group of men that are reading this book and all 6 have expressed the same sentiment.
Even though I have studied the Bible my entire life, I learned so much that expanded my understanding.
learned so much
Lois Tverberg’s definitions of Hebrew words and idioms sheds new light on scripture. Her research, study, and knowledge of rabbinic texts bring new understanding to Jesus’ words and the writings of the New Testament authors.
Her writing is easy for a lay person to read and understand. The questions at the end of each chapter are thought provoking. Often as I read I say “WOW!”
Thank you, Lois for challenging me with new thoughts and understandings.
I agree with the author’s assumption that to really understand who Jesus is and what He said, you have to know the culture and geography of Israel in the First Century. Being aware of what other rabbis have said over the years can be helpful but I don’t think that is the end all of understanding Jesus. It is very helpful however and I found the book enlightening. I will probably read it again and some of the authors other books as well.
If you wanted to understand the words of Jesus, one needs to understand the times and the audience to whom He spoke. This book is a wonderfully written explanation of many of the key ideas presented in the Gospel.
Talk about a life-changing book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Outstanding!! Scripture comes to life when what is said is viewed in the context with which it was said! Makes sense, huh? LoL After reading this book, I immediately purchased one for my daughter, and purchased it again for myself in paperback format so that I could go thru it again more slowly and make marks and note 🙂
The author (Lois Tverberg) takes you on a journey with Jesus. Not only does she teach you more about Jesus, but she challenges you to think and to go deeper with the Messiah. The book brings out the Jewishness of Jesus and links Bible passages to connect the dots.
One of the best Bible study books I have read. Provides context for understanding the context and language of the Teacher.
The Jewish Jesus.
This book is one more proof that learning more about the Jewish culture that Jesus lived in gives you a deeper understanding of Jesus teachings. It is full of fascinating facts with great indexes and resources for further reading.
A great book to read before any study of any of the New Testament Gospels. It will increase your understanding & enjoyment 100%. You don’t have to be studying one of the NT Gospels to enjoy this book, but this is why I read this book, and it certainly did help me. Just sayin’.
