Sexy shifter passion is awakened when two unlikely lovers are challenged by secrets, danger and an unstoppable need to claim one’s mate… For human Amy Francis, the secluded cabin in Deep Creek is the haven she needs to map out a fresh new start. She never expected her heart to be reawakened by a distraction like Griff Martin, commanding yet gentle, too ferociously sensual to ignore. It’s clear … ignore. It’s clear that patrolling the forest is more than a job to Griff–it’s a means of survival. But what Amy doesn’t realize is she’s reawakened the beast within him.
Griff’s dormant hunger is stirred by this intoxicating woman…and threatened by the secret she must never learn. Duty-bound to defend his bear clan against an avenging pride of lion shifters, Griff’s entire world is upended when he meets Amy. His animal need to claim his mate has taken hold, but that very desire could seal her fate as an unwitting pawn in battle.
Now, as a shifter war looms, Griff must decide between letting Amy go or following his most carnal instincts. To have her would change his life…but risk everything he knows and was born to protect.

This is the first book in a new series by Kerry Adrienne. Griff is a bear shifter, has no desire to find his fated mate ever, and is worried about the encroaching mountain lion clan. Amy, who has recently lost her job and left her abusive ex, has come to Deep Creek to rejuvenate her life by focusing on her art. The attraction between the two is there from there start but neither is interested in pursuing a relationship at this time. Unfortunately, Griff’s instincts won’t keep him from making sure Amy remains safe, something that is made more difficult by his inability to tell her just why the woods are unsafe. But when his enemy stalks Amy, time starts to run out.
As a first book in a new series, Ms. Adrienne works hard to establish the set up. Essentially, the mountain lions and the bears do not get along. The mountain lions have started to encroach on the bears’ lands. Ms. Adrienne introduces a number of characters who will presumably have their own books down the line.
Perhaps the best part of the book is build up to Amy and Griff’s relationship. Despite being fated mates, they don’t just jump into a relationship with each other – there is a nice slow build, helped in part by Griff’s reluctance to have a fated mate.
Overall, this is a quick read that sets up an interesting world and if the villains are a little meh that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
I really enjoyed the start of this series. I felt bad for Evers, too have that much rage and never believing the truth was sad. I thought it could of used one more chapter so we saw what happened when Elijah found out and the lions. I am excited to read more.
Kerry Adrienne has captured my attention when it comes to paranormal romance. Kerry is able to tell a story from start to finish without you knowing where it’s going to take you in between. A well paced writing style and patience in character development only strengthens her grip on the reader. This is a good book to get lost in and end your experience with a smile. Thank you, for sharing your mind with me. I was entertained.
In a land of human’s and magic,or is it Amy falling into the rabbit hole. A very good read that was tough to put down.An easy read that leaves a lot to the emotions.
As a whole, Waking the Bear was a bit flat for me.
Amy as a character got on my nerves. She was a bit of a flirt and a tease, but then when Griff or any other male reciprocated the flirting she inverted into herself and became a blushing virgin. She blames her issues on her previous relationship and her work for reasons she’s not happy in her life and why she set out to pursue her art in the mountains.
When I first started reading the book I felt a bit thrown into the story right away without getting much about what previously happened. It would’ve been nice if the author might have given us a prologue that gave us a bit of history about why the land the bears claim is so important to the lions and bears as well as why they no longer rule the area together like they apparently used to. There’s also the fact that there’s so many rules that the clans/prides have to follow. I wish we would’ve gotten to know more about why it wasn’t appropriate for Griff to kill another male for harming his mate.
Amy is taking a vacation to kinda relax and find herself and work on herself after a bad breakup and job loss. She’s in a cabin in a secluded area and wants to start fresh. Once she meets her landlord well she cant take her eyes off him. Sure she’s uber attracted to him but she’s wary and doesnt want to start anything. beyond friendship. Thats not what she’s there for but its not easy. Griff is a bear shifter and he instantly recognizes Amy as his mate but he’ll not put her in danger because trouble is coming his way. He’ll not claim her and tries to avoid things. Well that doesnt work so well for either of them. Can he keep her safe and have his mate by his side?
This was an ok read. I think some parts could have been fleshed out a little more. The plot for instance was about revenge but I think the author could have spent a little more time on the story line instead of focusing so much on Griff and Amy. Not that they weren’t important and it was a nice change and not so in your face like some can be. I just really wanted more background on what happened and this isnt a HEA but HFN. So, there is a continuation into the next book I assume. Its not all tied up. This is a solid 3 1/2 for me but I’ll rate 4.
Right from the start this book begins to lure you in and keeps you captivated, it’s easy to get lost in the pages and before you know it your transported into the book. Very descriptive and well written I would highly recommend this book
I was absolutely drawn to Griff and Amy they had both been through so much and deserved to find happiness with eachother… Griff never wanted. Mate.becuse he feared losing another person he loved and with the lions threatening war and Evers a lion intent of revenge against Griff Amy was in danger if anyone found out he found his.mate…I was so into this story I could not put it down.. now onto book two…
A sexy shifter romance. It was a thrilling read but I was a bit disappointed with how it played out. It was pretty predictable and the dialogue felt awkward at times for me.
So for me it was an overall 3.5 stars.
Waking the Bear by Kerry Adrienne is the first book in a new series. Much of this book is setting up the storyline for the rest of the series. I loved Griff and Amy are the primary characters and are very cute and sweet with a lot of humor in their relationship. Secondary characters are not as strongly developed and could have lent real credence to the story. The relationship between Griff and Amy developed slowly and steadily. They are very likeable and you want their relationship to continue and grow. This story was choppy at times and seemed rushed in places but overall I enjoyed it.
I love Amy and Griff’s story. Lots of danger, suspense, revelation, and love in a remote forest inhabited by more than one species of shifter and humans. A great story. I’m hoping to find more of Amy and Griff’s lives in a next book.
I thought this was a cute read with some likable characters and some that still need to grow up. Some things they say or happens just does not work for me. Being a park ranger how can you do your job and still hibernate? I really didn’t care much for the cave of mystical powers that is just me and really doesn’t have anything to do with the story or plot. It is a story about revenge getting even not about what really happened and finding the truth. there is danger, romance, learning and starting over. I liked Griff he is a bear shifter and meets everything I think one should be strong, deadly, caring, and he has lots of emotions. Amy is the true winner here for my affection she is strong and has been through a lot. Deciding to take some time off to get her life back on track she isn’t interested in another relationship. There is no doubt the attraction between these two is strong from the start but with danger near Griff isn’t sure he is ready to move on that just yet. Yes she is his mate and yes there are things she needs to learn but right now isn’t a good time.
I really like how the author builds up their relationship slow and easy. How shy and very cute they are, I loved how Griff gives her space being a true gentleman and pacing his self. I have no trouble buying into their relationship or even how he tells her the woods are dangerous and not to go alone. Of course being a strong woman she doesn’t listen, I most likely would not have even. Of course all woods are dangerous but that hasn’t stopped me yet. I do think Griff could have some up with something a little more meaningful to make her understand the danger but than there wouldn’t have been a kidnapping. Just not sure this worked for me.
Bottom line I love the characters for the most part, the chemistry was great, the plot was good, I just have a few little issues but I did enjoy the read and would try this author again.
Loved this book. Who doesn’t love the sexy alpha shifter claiming his woman??? I loved the characters, their development, and the twists of the story. Definitely going to read the rest of the series.
Loved this read. Read it in a couple of hours. The twist this book took was perfect and fit the story line perfectly. The flow and speed of the book was nice and well written. Can’t wait to continue the series.
The only thing that Griff thinks about is protecting his clan. That is until he meets Amy, his mate. It’s unfortunate timing with a war brewing. Now he has to decide whether to risk love or sacrifice it.
Great story. Wonderful series. Couldn’t put it down.
CA great book filled with action, adventure, passion and romance. Shifter Griff and his human mate Amy find themselves right in the middle of a brewing Shifter War between the mountain lions and the bears. Can he protect his mate while guarding his clan’s secret and preparing for a war that seems inevitable? Future books will tell that tale. In the meantime, this has a satisfying ending and an HEA that will leave you smiling.
