I love fantasy, I love action, I love characters that grow. Waking Magic has all these elements and more. I just finished the first book and am quickly moving on to the second.
Waking Magic by Martha Carr, Michael Anderle and narrated by Carly Robins is a fresh fun fantasy! It has a portal to another world, a tough female Texas cop, elves, a murdered Prince, drunk bowlers, tentacles, and a 5 inch troll that bonds with the cop! The little troll can change sizes too!
It is action packed, fun, full of zany characters, situations, and keep me very entertained!

I’m giving this 4 stars for potential. This was a fun story and it was refreshing to read a book that includes elves without a romance subplot. After reading the Author’s Notes at the end, I gather this story was written a while ago, so that garners a bit of leeway; at times though, this story was difficult to read. The perspective / POV changed constantly in the beginning, making it difficult to follow and the proofreading overall was somewhat lacking.
Getting past that, I thought the plot was interesting and the characters, while most were not deep, had enough mystery to keep me reading. The writing style was fast paced, no flowery prose or lengthy descriptions to be found. I did have some laugh out loud moments.
Michael Anderle has a particular writing style, if you’ve read his work you understand, and this book definitely had his touch all over it. It’s always fun to see what authors do when they co-write a book.
It sounds like there are many more stories in this world and that makes me happy.
Too much fantasy…
I’ll start this review by clearing a personal bias; I love Urban Fantasy but I’m not a fan of traditional Fantasy (Tolkien style fantasy).
The book starts off in a parallel world with an Elven Prince being murdered by a human who steals a powerful artifact and disappears back to Earth. The elves recruit Leira, a Houston based police detective to track down the murderer/thief and bring him to justice. Time is ticking as the artifact will release its power soon which could have drastic implications for Earth.
The quality of the writing was good, and the supporting cast of character were both interesting and humorous. I really enjoyed the story when it was on Earth, but the chapters where it cut back to the Elven realm really put a damper on the pace of the story for me. When this happened, I usually put the book down and came back to it in a couple of days.
If you’re a fan of both Urban Fantasy and traditional Fantasy, then this is the book for you. If you are like me and have had your fill of Traditional fantasy, then I’d suggest you pass on this book.
I have read all the books in this series and can’t get enough. A kick pass heroine, a wonderfully funny and endearing troll. Magic is real and coming to our planet thank the gods for Leira and her crazy crew all is not lost.
