Can she face her fears and lead her people? The last thing Cissy wants is a position of power. She’s seen what it does to people and has been the victim of it. But with the necromancers in disarray, all eyes are on her to do just that. Finally giving in, she sets about bringing her people back into order. Except that there’s a problem. Bodies are turning up, and the signs point to someone from … to someone from Cissy’s past. Someone she thought was dead…

Narcissa, aka Cissy, is still reeling from her kidnapping by an evil necromancer, but she is in charge of re-creating the Necromancer Council. She wants to fix something in the present while she is trying to move on from her past. She meets Darius who has joined her project. There’s a fated mate scenerio going on here so even though there is some focus on her trauma, her project and her new love interest take up most of her attention. The story grabs on from the very beginning and even if you don’t know what lead up to this, Laura Greenwood has provided the information of where to go in the end credits. I’m excited the Necromancer Council is being re-created and can’t wait for ‘Curse the Dead’ to come next.
A really good book by author Laura Greenwood.
Was drawn in from the beginning and could not put it down until I finished it. Loved reading… Wonderful start to a new series…

Laura is one of my must read authors she always delivers me a fantastic story. This is book 1 of what I’m thinking will be a phenomenal story!!! I devoured this and cannt wait for more!!
In a world of necromancers, the (un)dead, and all other kinds of shady types, it’s the living that are the most dangerous. Narcissa, or Cissy as she insists, knows that all too well. Scarred from a bad experience, she’s trying to get the control back over her life and part of her mission is to start the Necromancer Council. This first book is a wonderful introduction to the characters and part of Laura Greenwood’s impressively entangled paranormal world. Neither Cissy or the reader can escape her past, especially when it’s coming back to haunt her. The characters have to go through some painful and tough moments, but there’s also love, friendship, and light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a book with depth and I can’t wait to read the rest. This series is easily one of my favourites and I can’t recommend it enough.
This is the start of a new series from this author.
The storyline is well developed and interesting but
it’s a slow burn read but that gives you time to get
to know the characters.
Good chemistry between the characters though.

Wake The Dead is book one of The Necromancer Council series and is Cissy’s journey. Cissy has gone through a lot and is now in charge of bringing order to The Necromancer Council and along the way she meets her fated mate Darius. I really enjoyed Cissy’s story and from the mystery to the slow burn romance, this book held my attention from the first page until the last. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
This is the first book I have read by Laura Greenwood and I could tell you from the first half that it would certainly not be the last! I now want to know more about, not only Cissy and Darius but also, Tabby and Richard! I was so happy that I liked this book so much because now I know I have several more books to read by Laura that I am going to enjoy as well.
I love the dynamic between all of the characters. And the characters were rich in personality that I could easily relate to. The story is laid out in such a way that it is very easy to follow, and very hard to put down.
I would, and will, certainly recommend this book to a friend. And I will be catching up on the rest of the series as well.
In this series, the paranormal is a secret from humans btw.

A great first book in this new Necromancer Council series! I liked how this was similar to the Paranormal Council and yet there are also differences between them. The slow-burn of the romance between Cissy and Darius is very intriguing too. I am looking forward to how this storyline develops.

I clicked on this book thinking it was from an author I’d read before. I delved right into it and really loved it. Of course it’s a spin off to other books I’m going to have to find now, but I didn’t feel lost or anything. I really enjoyed it. I really liked Cissy and look forward to reading more books about her. I highly recommend.

Another amazing read by this author.
This author is so talented in all that she writes and can set the world and characters for readers so well.
I feel like the main character has lots of character growth through this series as she works through personal obstacles she has encountered previously.
I also enjoyed the side romance throughout the book that keeps you interested and wanting to know what will happen next.

Our heroine doesn’t really want to be in charge, but then no one really gave her a choice either.
This is book one so a good place to start.
This is a paranormal romance story with a slow burn romance. The story is well written and easy to read with a detailed setting that is fun to explore. The characters are well developed with different and intriguing backgrounds that provides some variety in the story. The story moves along pretty quickly and gives us a nice introduction to the world and the challenges. Overall, it is a nice start to a series and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Highly recommended.

This is book one of The Necromancer Council series and Cissy (real name Narcissa – but who wants to be called such an archaic name nowadays – no matter what their society likes for its naming basis!) is being pulled back in front of the High Council, the five most important paranormals in the country! After she had been kidnapped by her cousin Alvin, who had also tried to kill his own sister Tabitha and her mate. He was a necromancer who wanted to use his powers for things that many necromancers would find distasteful and against the rules and laws they stand by. He belonged to a sect of necromancers who believed themselves far superior to everyone else, even when they aren’t. Since she got rescued, the High Council have asked her to set up a new Necromancer Council, with new people, who will not hopefully, allow the power to go to their heads and Cissy was given time to recover from her ordeal, before she had to make any decisions, but the longer necromancers are left without a council in charge of keeping them all in line, the worse matters could get. The new Necromancer Council would be able to help police their members and finally put them back on a par with the other paranormal councils, situated in the same building as the High Council.
She gets shown to the old council rooms, where she is met by fellow necromancer Darius, who has been consulting with the High Council on any matters they needed opinions on, and to help her with re-estabilising the Council. Together they need to come up with names of other necromancers, who weren’t involved in the downfall of the last council. They agree on one, Aurora Evans, who is mated to a member of the Shifter Council and already had experience of working as a liaison for the last council. The three are the beginning of a new council and Cissy’s idea of getting the other members voted in by the other necromancers out there, so some will be people they know themselves, with the same values. A much more balanced council than existed before and hopefully one that will work well with the other Councils, which has been a problem in the past. But before they can get too far with their plans, they are called in to help with the case of a zombie for the Paranormal Criminal Investigations (PCI), at their headquarters. They meet scientists Cassie and Isaac, and pathologist Zack, who show them the unidentified body they have in the morgue. Cissy explains a zombie is created when a necromancer is raised from the dead and isn’t exactly a common occurrence.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only zombie Cissy and Darius are going to come across, as they take matters slowly on their mate bond which Cissy certainly wasn’t ready for! They have to figure out if this zombie was created before or after the announcement of a new council being reformed was made. It has been against the necromancer laws for ages, but someone may have tried to make use of the time without any lawful policing of activities, with the lack of an actual council. But someone has done this deliberately and after the council was reformed, so they have done it with a purpose and one zombie certainly isn’t the end of matters! Someone they thought was dead, is seemingly getting others to carry out his original plans, creating a zombie army and much more. When Tabitha gets a worrying letter, it confirms this person is back for real and someone they have both had negative experiences with. This person has a large following and lots of power, but definitely not the future of necromancers within the paranormal society, but rather to do everything to set them apart from other paranormals and feared by all! A great start to the series, with a battle against hordes or zombies, a damaged heroine with a touch of romance unexpectedly coming in the midst of difficult decisions. A dangerous foe is back and both Cissy and Tabby will have to deal with what is to come, as well as all the horrific memories it will bring. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Wake The Dead by Laura Greenwood. This quick read is the first book in The Necromancer Council. While this book is set in The Paranormal Council Universe, you do not have to have read The Necromancer’s Prey (Rory’s Story) or Blood and Deceit (Richard and Tabitha’s Story) to enjoy this read. There are references to events that happened in those books, but you are given enough back story to piece it all together and enjoy Cissy’s story. This is a clean read with a slow burn romance, but the promise is there. This great anytime read is entertaining, but does set you up for the next book…

I really enjoyed this dark read. It is definitely different from all of Laura Greenwood’s other stories and the first necromancer story that I have ever read. The characters were likable and the story was very interesting and held my attention the whole time. There is a slow burn romance going on in this story but no much as come of it, at least for now. It was full of adventure and has me eagerly anticipating the next story in this series. I can’t wait until the next book comes out. This was a really good read.

Good beginning to a series focused on necromancers with likable main characters. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved this take on necromancy within the paranormal world. The world building is amazing and detailed. I felt that the dark pieces of Cissy’s backstory were handled very well. Darius is such a wonderful gentleman, he knows that Cody has been through something traumatic, and he is doing his best to just be there for her and not push her. Absolutely can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Wake the Dead by Laura Greenwood is book 1 of the Necromancer Council. This is the story of Narcissa (Cissy) and Darius. After suffering horrendous imprisonment and control by a madman Cissy is charged with rebuilding the Necromancer Council. Darius is enlisted to help her. They need to prevent this from ever happening again. But, now….zombies have invaded…and there seems to be no way to find where they are hiding.
This was sweet, tame story that has some good elements! The story is good and the characters are likable. Very nice start to a new series!

Whilst this is the first book in a new series we do get to catch up with some familiar characters which is absolutely brilliant. Cissy does not exactly want the position of power that is thrust upon her but if the Necromancers are ever going to get their position back in society she needs to rebuild the council so that their reputation can be restored and people can stop being terrified of them or hating them because of the actions of a few but her job is not going to be easy, especially when reanimated corpses start popping up. The characters are simply fabulous as with all Ms Greenwood’s characters, and the story will captivate you. Cannot wait to see where Cissy’s journey takes her next.
