Can she face her fears and lead her people? The last thing Cissy wants is a position of power. She’s seen what it does to people and has been the victim of it. But with the necromancers in disarray, all eyes are on her to do just that. Finally giving in, she sets about bringing her people back into order. Except that there’s a problem. Bodies are turning up, and the signs point to someone from … to someone from Cissy’s past. Someone she thought was dead…

“Wake The Dead” is the first part in this new series. The story follows Cissy, a necromancer recovering from her kidnapping and torture.
She is offered a job and uses it to get back up and correct mistakes that have been made before. I like her spirit and determination! She is asked to reform the Necromancer Council and she has some great company to help her get it going! Darius, who turns out to be her mate, her cousin Tabby and Rory. When she comes in she is hit hard with a case so close to her own torture, but she forges on and ends up closing this case but it does lead into the next story.
The story grabs you from the beginning and makes you wonder what happened to lead up to all this.
Laura Greenwood is one of my favorite authors. I never know what she is going to write next, but so far, I have always been very happy with her stories. This one is no exception. I love the characters. The story does have some possible triggers for those who have issues about abuse, dead people, etc. But all that just added depth to the story. An recovering, abused necromancer put in charge of building a new necromancer council finds her fated mate while doing so. This is their story and it is a good one. I recommend it.

This read is dark and I like that as well as the light. The idea of raising the dead is a dark topic. The whole plot of this book drew me in and surprised me in a good way. I found it hard to put down. No spoilers here but this is a great start and I will be reading the next one.
Necromancy should be about protecting the dead, not exploiting Them. that is what Cissy believes and it seems there are a lot of other necromancers that agree with her as she reluctantly sets to work rebuilding the necromancer council. There is also a bit of a mystery that just begins to unfold in this book and a sweet, slow burn romance.
The Paranormal World has fated mates, and Cissy has lots of raw trauma in her recent past. This book does a wonderful job of navigating that potential landmine field in an incredible gentle, respectful and graceful way. There might be instant sparks, but Darius is the consummate gentleman and willing to let Cissy move at the pace that is right for her.
This is the first book in the Necromancer Council book and a great place to enter this world. There is enough information about previous events to understand what is going on. Reading other books set in the Paranormal Council world helps round things out a bit (and if you haven’t already you will probably want to after this book) but you won’t be missing anything critical in this book if you haven’t read those first.
Good start to a new series. The main character is well written and the story has enough twists and action to keep you interested.
**Trigger Warning!** I really like this short story. This is a fantasy with a little romance. There is a fated mates thing happening, but it is a slow-burn romance. I like how it feels like just the tip of the iceberg. It has just enough exposition so that I could understand what is going on, but now I want to read all the previous stories leading up to this one. I’m happy that the author’s note has links to the stories that came before.
Cissy, aka Narcissa, is still reeling from her kidnapping by an evil necromancer, but she is in charge of re-creating the Necromancer Council. She wants to fix something in the present while she is trying to move on from her past. She meets Darius who has joined her project. I like how there’s some focus her trauma, but her project and her new love interest take up most of her attention.
I also enjoyed the villain(s) plot being foiled be Cissy and Darius. I love how the magic is described and that necromancers do so much more than making zombies.
I appreciate how few details are given on the zombies (because EW!), but I wish there had been more descriptions of the characters. I know Cissy has lots of scars and brown hair, but that’s it. I don’t know what Darius looks like. I also would have liked to know what happened after the back up people appeared. It felt like a scene was missing.

I enjoyed reading this book. Cissy has plenty of past trauma to deal with and Darius is the perfect partner for her with how sweet and supportive he is. The overall plot was fun. I’m eager to see what happens in the next book.

Cissy meets Darius and its an immediate awakening within her knowing he is her mate. Will her fear ever let him close? Not only is her body scarred but so is she emotionally. Is he willing to wait for her or try to force intimacy. The story is good and moves at a steady active pace.

So very good!
I love that the Necromancer Council is reestablishing in the Paranormal Council universe. I love these books so much and can’t wait for book 2.
Love this!!! The story grabs you from the beginning and makes you wonder what happened to lead up to all this….the end credits tell you where to go for the 2 stories leading up to this one. I know new ones on my TBR pile!!! Cissy is a very strong woman trying to get her life back together after being kidnapped n tortured… a job is offered and she uses it to build herself back up and right wrongs that were done before. I love her spirit and determindness! Darius slides in very smoothly and gives her all the space she needs….wowza their mates! She is asked to reform the Necromancer Council and she has some great company to help her get it going! Darius, who turns out to be her mate, her cousin Tabby and Rory are the three who will help her get things started. A good group and very supportive of Cissy. As she comes in she is hit hard with a case too close to her torture but she forges on and ends up closing this case but it does lead into the next story. Am guessing it’s better to read them in order to understand a bit more about what Cissy went through and the next book… Curse the Dead. Sooooooooooooo looking forward to the next book!!!

“Wake The Dead” by Laura Greenwood is the first instalment in the new urban fantasy “Necromancer Council Trilogy”. The story follows Cissy, a necromancer recovering from her kidnapping – event narrated in the “Paranormal Council” series by the same author – who is intended on rebuilding the Necromancer Council. There isn’t strictly necessary to have knowledge of previous series to enjoy the story, Greenwood gives enough key information to follow the story without any problems. While Cissy isn’t keen on holding any power position, she also knows that rebuilding the Council is paramount to protect the Necromancers and their needs.
Despite being a rather short story (barely over 100 pages) “Wake the Dead” is a very packed story, that deals with Cissy’s character and her struggle overcoming trauma, while having to concentrate in rebuilding the council. Darius, who has been sent by the members of the Paranormal Council to assist in her task, is not only another necromancer, but also destined to be Cissy mate. The relationship between both characters is endearing. Nevertheless, the action doesn’t come short, expect zombies, best kept secrets, interesting twists and the already acclaimed and well-crafted paranormal UF world building, Greenwood has us accustomed to.
Just a word of caution, this book deals with violence and trauma and can be triggering from some readers!
This is a fabulous urban fantasy!! I liked it a lot.. It is dark and full of drama… with characters and storyline that blow my mind..

This was a great story with brilliant world building and an unusual take on necromancy. Loved the characters and the plot but be warned it s a cliff hanger!

Cissy is still recovering from what happened in her past. She realizes she can’t put of rebuilding the Necromancer Council. Cissy meets Darius a necromancer the Council members sent to help her. Cissy feels a strange pull to him, just refuses to name it. Cissy and Darius are called about PCI due to a problem. They are showed a zombie, it is possible it related to Cissy’s prior predictment. Cissy and Darius are lead to Cissy’s worst nightmare, Cissy will have to figure out how to handle it.
This was a really good beginning to the this new series. Like how the author covered the characters prior experiences without going into a detail. Cissy and Darius trying to navigate their next steps plus trying to figure out what is going on with the zombies. This story will definitely keep your attention. Will read the next book in series.
Another series based in the Paranormal Council setting but this time with Cissy and her quest to setup a new Necromancer Council. This is book one and is set as Cissy has had time to recover from her kidnapping and meets her fated mate. But of course things are not a happy rainbows and a bit of a conflict pops up that kind of made me laugh but think at the same time as what is going on. And the ending really makes me curious to know what is coming. A cute clean read with a slow burn romance with some mystery added to spice things up. A quick short read.
If there’s one supernatural species I’m interested in, but haven’t read much about, it’s Necromancers. There’s something equally fascinating and scary about people who can raise and control the dead. And the possibilities are endless! I mean, if there’s one power you can both use for good and bad, it’s a power like this. So, when I got this ARC from BooksSprout I just couldn’t wait any longer and had to read it right away.
And Laura Greenwood already told us on Facebook that this book touches on dark topics. She wasn’t exaggerating. Our heroine has dealt with some really dark stuff in the past and even though Greenwood doesn’t go into too many details, it’s quite clear what has happened and what this has done to our heroine. In a way, even though it’s also an exciting book about Necromancers, this book is about dealing with trauma.
The way Greenwood does this is very touching, very realistic and most of all very respectful. Our hero really gives our heroine the time to deal with everything that happened, he’s never pushing, always listening, but he’s not perfect. He does mess up at times and then realizes he did. Therefore it’s not only easy to like him and love him, but it’s even more easy to root for them as a couple. Not because they’re fated mates, but because they’re really good for each other.
Does that mean there’s no other plot in this book? No. There totally is and it’s a good one! Our hero and heroine are forming a new Necromancer Council and while they are looking for the right candidates to fill the available seats, they also have to deal with the first offenses against the rules. It are these offenses actually triggering the trauma our heroine is carrying with her. And so both the plot and the emotional journey of the heroine influence each other.
I can’t wait to read the rest of this story, especially after that cliffhanger!
