Meet New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ryan’s McGraths: a family as untamed as the land they call home.
Tate McGrath just didn’t get it. Why was Liz Scott, his best friend—and the person he relied on and trusted most—suddenly avoiding him! When he finally tracks her down, he finds her with a man he knows nothing about and she’s been dating for weeks. Suddenly, he can’t make himself … for weeks. Suddenly, he can’t make himself ignore her tempting curves and deep green eyes, and all he wants to do is keep her all to himself. What was going on? Could he possibly be…jealous?
Liz had made the decision: stop carrying a torch for Tate and find a guy who wants to be her everything. Tate had always seen her as honest, dependable, smart, kind…Best friend, not girlfriend! And she needed to give up the dream of marrying the man she’d loved since preschool and move on.
But when Liz’s boyfriend turns dangerous, Tate steps up to help and soon realizes he’s the cowboy hero she’s been waiting for him to be all along.

Well written with true to life characters.
Waiting on a Cowboy is the first book in the McGrath series and the first I have read by this author. I fell in love with the characters from the beginning! Liz Scott had loved Tate McGrath since Kindergarten and had finally realized that she needed to move on. She was ready for a marriage and a future family. Tate knew Liz had feelings for him, but he was too scared to lose her as a friend to have a closer relationship with her. When Tate finally realizes that she wasn’t hanging around as much, he finally realized what he might be giving up with his fears. Liz thought she had found someone she could have a future with, only to realize that Clint was not all that he seemed. As Tate slowly starts to see Liz in a different light, Liz is being stalked by Clint and fears for her life. This was a fast-paced book and had a wonderful storyline. I really enjoyed being introduced to the McGrath family and look forward to future books by this author.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this suspenseful romance. I bought this at a local store and I voluntarily chose to review it. I’ve given it a 4.5* rating. Because of the sexual and violent content, this is not for the under 18 readers. This certainly gripped me from the beginning and I had a hard time putting it down to get some sleep. There was a lot of action to keep moving this on. Could the bad guy get away with murder? Need to read to find out.
Loved this premis!! Boy meets girl, girl sets her cap on him and says I’m gonna marry you. All while they are a whopping five years old, lol. Only Tate, said boy, was a bit slow on the uptake. Liz decides to move on and EVERYTHING goes sideways when she dates a sick sumbitch unknowingly.
All this was serious, frightening and a bit too long. The mind speak slowed it all down for me, so I skipped some pages, and stayed in the story right up to that glorious wedding HEA. Lizard’s Love indeed. If you read the book, you’ll know what I mean.
Friends to Lovers, a deep and pure love comes out through tragedy, and moves along stronger than ever. All the feels in here
This is the first book I have read from this author and I loved it. I will have to go back and read her earlier work.
Tate and Liz have been friends since elementary school. They were each others person without the romantic entanglements. They have remained loyal friends through it all. Until Liz finally realizes that Tate is never going to see her as a friend.
I liked the character of Tate. For some reason I could really understand him. He had completely put Liz in the friend zone and would not ever entertain anything else. That was why the first time he feels a little jealous he loses it. It was like to put blinders on to her. He knew she had interest in him but chose to ignore it.
Liz was a woman I could admire. She was sick of pining for Tate and decided that she wanted someone who wanted her like a woman. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t pick the best guy to start this I am woman here me roar thing. The things I loved reading about Liz was the stages of everything that she went though. She ran the gambit on her feeling towards Tate the whole book and also all the stages towards her stalker. She would be scared one moment and then she would get upset and not hide from him.
The book had lots of ups and downs. There was sweet and sexy times along with fun and banter. There was also suspense and drama so basically this book has everything!
Wow
I won a copy of this book from Goodreads giveaways and was not required to give a favorable review. What happens when you love someone since you were kids but he never seen to get it. But then you date a guy who ends up being obsessed with you.
Excellent suspense-filled dramatic stalker/action-packed/protective friends-to-lovers/cowboy romantic love story! This is the first book in the McGrath series and it really packs a punch, that’s for sure! I really liked both of the MC a great deal even if Tate was basically clueless as to his real feelings for Liz until it was almost too late! The villain in this book was Clint and he was a truly nasty piece of work! Men like him should come with a neon blinking warning sign hung around their necks. A really good way to start off what appears to be another great series by Jennifer Ryan.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley.
I feel like I’ve read a lot of books with intense content lately. This story deals with domestic abuse and stalking, among other things. If that is not something you do well with in your books, please skip this one. It’s a great book, just not for everyone.
It’s been a minute since I’ve read a Jennifer Ryan book. I was lucky enough to win an ebook of this story in a Goodreads giveaway. Yay! I’ve read a lot of this author’s books, but definitely not all of them. And when I saw this is a first in series book I tried my luck at getting a copy.
Although this is the first in the McGrath series, there were a few things that made me think some of the other characters came from another series. Turns out this series is flowing out of the Wild Rose Ranch series. Not to worry, I didn’t have an issue following along. Now I just want to read that series to learn how Tate’s brother got his HEA.
Honestly, I thought I was going to despise Tate after the first chapter of this story. Ugh! The man was so clueless and self-involved! Yes, he seemed like a good enough guy. But he sure wasn’t being a very good friend to Liz. And it seemed like that was often the case. The friendship was a bit lopsided. Thankfully, once Tate pulled his head out of his butt, everything clicked into place and even he admitted he was quite the idiot for years leading up to this moment.
As for Liz, she has the patience of a saint. Of course, it’s hard to walk away when you know the person you’re cutting out of your life is the love of your life…even if that person has blinders on. This woman has been put through the ringer but still is able to find compassion for Tate.
Once everyone opens their eyes to what is going on around them, the relationship between Liz and Tate is on fire. I love how they love each other. And, although it’s hard to read at times, I appreciate the author painting a pretty realistic picture of how abusers work. Their methods and ways to make smart women doubt themselves. Of course, the situation with Clint (a guy Liz dated while waiting around for Tate) is extreme. But the bare bones of that relationship – drastic mood swings, extreme jealousy, etc. – is how these men operate. This author is wonderful at writing suspense, and that was no different in this book.
Reading this story was quite a reminder that I need to get more Jennifer Ryan reading into my repertoire. She’s always entertaining.

Great book and a quick read
This is a sweetly sexy, fun and action packed lifetime friends to so much more journey filled with interesting and engaging charters, witty and fun dialog, heart racing twists, a hard headed cowboy and emotionally thrilling passion that will no longer be ignored. Great reading from beginning to end.
Jennifer Ryan’s WAITING ON A COWBOY is first book of the McGrath series. Tate McGrath has been best friends with Liz Scott since kindergarten, but why is she avoiding him for weeks? When he tracks her down, he finds her dating a man–a man he instantly dislikes. To have a life without Tate, Liz needs to give up her dream of marrying the man she’d loved since preschool. When her boyfriend turns dangerous, Tate steps up to keep Liz safe. Jennifer Ryan writes deeply emotional romances with the high drama, love, and family. WAITING ON A COWBOY is suspenseful and downright scary which makes this book a compelling cowboy romance of a perfect mixture of heat and danger.
Friends to Lovers with a dash of danger, that’s what Jennifer Ryan gives us in Waiting for a Cowboy. Liz told Tate when they were 5 yrs old that she would marry him one day. Many years later they’re adults and he almost loses her when a dangerous man takes an interest in her. A terrific romantic suspense. 5 stars.
Smooth reading, holds ones attention to keep reading.
It is always a pleasure to read a book by Jennifer Ryan. They’re always layered, smart, tackle real world issues in mostly realistic ways, interesting and have a little humor sprinkled in. Tate and Liz have been best friends since kindergarten. They rely on each other for almost everything, though it skews about 90/10 in Tates favor. Tate is a good guy, but not a smart aware man and has completely taken advantage of their relationship. You almost can’t blame him for Liz sat back quietly while he did his thing and waited for him to have some sort of revelation, get his head out of his behind and realize she is the only one for him. Sadly, he is not that self evolved because really isn’t is all about him always and forever! Even talking to him leaves him clueless and confused again, because if it isn’t about him does it really an issue? Reminded me too the old age old question :if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there is hear it does it make any noise?” YES IT DOES!!! He doesn’t even recall their last conversation except for the part about his needs. I started thinking of him as BDG (big dopey guy). We’ve all known some of them and they come in both genders so don’t think I mean all guys, just this one in particular. There is a big difference between a guy and a man. All men can be guys, but not all guys ever become men. When Tate basically ghosts her for 6 weeks because he’s got other things to do Liz decides she is done. Done waiting, done having expectations, done feeling badly and done being treated like an after thought. It is time to cut her losses, go after what she wants and move forward with her own dreams even if it means leaving Tate behind. When he bumps into her at the local hangout he is shocked to see her with man after having successfully avoided his calls. I applaud her for standing up for herself, though not so much for her new guy. He isn’t who she thinks he is and so begins the journey of figuring out what we will truly do for the people we love, defining that love and finding their way back to each other. I really enjoyed this book. Though a romance and of course HEA, it is a wonderful read that will leave you awaiting this authors next book.
I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy from Netgalley and the Publisher for an honest review.
Waiting on a Cowboy was an amazing, intense, romantic ride. It is the first book in a new series by Jennifer Ryan but contains characters from a previous series. You do not need to read that series to understand this storyline but I would recommend them.
Ryan tells the story of Tate McGrath and Liz Scott who have been best friends since before they could walk. Liz has always know that she was in love with Tate but Tate remained clueless until Liz shut him out. Seeing her in a new relationship, no longer available to him, stirs something to life in Tate. Liz’s new boyfriend isn’t what he seems to be on the surface.
As the story developed there were several intense scenes. They drove the story along, engaging me with a need to know the ultimate outcome. It was easy to get to know these characters. Both Tate and Liz were very like able and since their relationship was already established it didn’t take long to become interested in them and their story. I can’t wait for the next installment.
ARC for honest review with no compensation Received from NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers
Waiting on a Cowboy is book 1 in the McGrath series by Jennifer Ryan is well written, emotional read.
Tate and Liz have been best friends since they were 5 years old and as they grew up Liz’s feelings turned into love but Tate never saw it..as he never crossed the line from friendship. Finally Liz has had enough and distances herself, starts dating and it took Tate 6 weeks to realize she wasn’t around…he doesn’t understand why…until he has a heart to heart talk with his brother and realizes that maybe Liz is what he has been searching for but is it to late? Liz is dating someone else but unbeknownst to them both he may not be on the up and up…
What happens next will keep you turning the pages, suspenseful, romantic and hoping Tate and Liz find what has always been there…
I loved this amazing friends to lovers story and I’m excited it’s the beginning of a new series. It’s a nice sexy romance with a touch of suspense and action to keep things really interesting. Liz and Tate have great chemistry and you can’t help but want them to get their HEA. This is a book for the must read list. I highly recommend it.
Friends for a lifetime Liz and Tate have hit a rocky place. Liz wanted more than Tate was willing to give – Tate needing a come to Jesus moment to realize his true feelings for her.
Jennifer Ryan his the very real tones of abusive, stalker, possessive relationships in this book so kudos to her! You won’t be able to put this book down.
I’m always a fan of a friends to lovers story and this one delivers. Liz tells Tate one day in Kindergarten that she’s going to marry him. He doesn’t believe her. Fast forward to adulthood and he still hasn’t caught on despite their being best friends and so Liz attempts to move on and find love elsewhere. She begins dating Clint who seems to be what Liz is hoping for…until he isn’t.
This book needs a trigger warning for some as Clint is a controlling abusive character. I enjoyed the story and that things were not solved easily. I did wish the focus was more on Liz and Tate’s relationship instead of the issues with Clint but I understand it would be a different book then. I felt the writing was a bit wordy and repetitive at times but was overall well written. I would recommend this one to those who want a friends to lovers romance and a quick read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for an ARC of this book. The opinions here are my own.
I had high hopes for this book and while I enjoyed some of it, other parts not so much.
I liked both of the main characters, even though Tate was SO clueless when it comes to Liz. I liked the history of their being friends for so many years. I even liked that Liz got her gumption up and went looking for love somewhere else. She was tired of waiting for this cowboy. Which makes this a really good title for this book.
However, this book was SO slow because for me it got dragged down with all the rehashing of regrets. That would be Tate doing most of that. He wish washed back and forth for a while about whether trying to have more with Liz and possibly lose their friendship. It wasn’t until about 50% through the story that things really started to happen more. There are plenty of twists, turns and danger from that point on.
Liz’s new boyfriend Clint turned out to be really slick.
There are plenty of secondary people in the story and they added a lot to the story. Tate’s brother Declan had a part to play in this story. And now I want to read his story of finding love. Detective Valdez also played a part in this story too.
The book does have some dramatic things happen as it winds down to the end.
