Private investigator Kinsey Millhone finds shocking connections between two seemingly unrelated deaths in this #1 New York Times bestselling mystery in the Alphabet series. The first victim is a local PI of suspect reputation, gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. The second is a John Doe found on the beach six weeks later with a slip of paper with private detective Kinsey Millhone’s name … Kinsey Millhone’s name and number in his pocket.
Two seemingly unrelated deaths: one man murdered, the other apparently dead of natural causes.
But as Kinsey digs deeper into the mystery of the John Doe, some very strange links begin to emerge. Not just between the two victims, but also to Kinsey’s past. And before long Kinsey, through no fault of her own, is thoroughly compromised…

I love he way the charactors seem so real.
The descriptions were just more than they need to be. Could have been much shorter and been a lot better. She has been one of my favorite authors in the past.
Very entertaining…enjoyed the main character, although her actions can be a bit frustrating at times. You wonder what the he’ll she’s doing
Good read!
Love all her books just wish there were more of them
Way too long for the subject matter. A clever idea, but stretched too far.
typical Sue Grafton. Well written characters, realistic heroine
Good plot and enjoyable read.
One of her best!
Always a great mystery
My favorite Sue Grafton book
Crafty, well written suspense, keeps you reading till the end
Sue Grafton never misses. This is an excellent, page-turning read. Takes you away from the current political mess for a while..
I’ve read most of the Sue Grafton alphabet mysteries. W is for Waste is okay but not one of her best. This story involving two seemingly unrelated murders is slow to develop. Too much time is wasted with uninteresting details about homeless folks and nutty relatives of one of the deceased. The elements of a decent story may be here but they are just not drawn together well. In this book I feel that Kinsey is losing interest in her PI job, going through the motions and riding the bow wave from previous success. Two failed marriages, no kids, no close family, elderly friends. The job that gave her purpose seems to come up short now. This is a good series. Start at the beginning.
1st person narrated detective stories in a series that have a heroine who always succeeds in the end. Great for grown-up Nancy Drew lovers
I dread the end of the alphabet.
always a great author
Like all of sue grafton’s books, i didnt stop reading until i finished it
great read. keeps you guessing!
Love Grafton’s Millhone series and this one doesn’t disappoint. She does a nice job of intertwining the two deaths. Can’t wait for the next installment.
Kinsey is always an interesting read. Too bad there are only 26 letters in the alphabet.
