“I have sworn twice in my life I would no longer touch you, Ara. And I have attempted it twice. But I am not a man that can stand by that particular vow.”
She prayed for death.
Stolen from her home, sold for her innocence, all Ara Detton wanted was death. One man stood in her way, Caine Farlington. Ara is forced to survive, forced to rebuild her life. A life that is orderly, busy—with a … that is orderly, busy—with a destiny that is her own. All would be perfect, if not for having to hide her love for the man that once saved her. The man that forced her to live, to survive, to flourish.
He refuses to let her go.
In search of his missing betrothed, Caine Farlington, the Earl of Newdale, quite by accident, saves Ara from the worst possible fate. Six years later, Ara is an indispensable part of his life—even if he has to curb his need to touch her at every turn.
The one you love is not always the one you think you need.
Neither one of them is prepared to let the other go. But to remain together, both must find redemption and learn to forgive secrets of the past.
Note: The Lords of Action books are each stand-alone stories, and can be read individually in any order. These historical romances are set in the Regency and Victorian eras, and do not shy away from naughty language, scenes with steamy heat, and moments that might possibly make you squirm.

I love KJ Jackson books. When I finish the last page, I am searching for the next book by Ms. Jackson. Wonderful!
Could not put it down. Original story with great characters.
Typical Historical Romance and you know all will be well in the end-BUT very enjoyable t read
I really liked this book. I decided to read the follow up books that continue the stories of some of the friends. It is a bit naughty and I liked it. Both main characters are strong together and apart. Very Steamy!!
Good romance.
A very good story line and hard to put down.
Some tough moments in this story, but it worked.
I loved this book so much that I bought the other 2 books in the series.
Brought up that sex slavery is not a new concept
Liked the characters personalities
It was okay – didn’t like it as well as some I’ve read.
Loved It
Not at all how I thought this story would go! I loved every minute!
This must be an early book by this author — the conflict feels a bit contrived, though the premise is original — not easy with a Regency romance. See what you think, and then look for later books by this author. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of it, but I have read some of her other books with great enjoyment. So even if you don’t like this one, give her another chance.
I couldn’t put this down. Great read!
Caine Farlington has returned from military service and determined to find his fiancee, Isabella, who has disappeared. His search leads him to a brothel with an auction of virgins, whose faces are hidden. By elimination, he and his friend target one blonde girl. He buys her and doesn’t realize till she is in his coach and removes the hood covering her face, he has wrong girl. Arabella Detton was snatched from her country home and terrified by her ordeal. Realizing his error, Ara was able to give Caine the dreaded news of Isabella’s death, and she asks him to return her to her home in the country, where her father is a vicar. Consumed by grief, Caine does so and while journeying back to London, his driver spots Ara lying in a ditch, beaten by her father. Caine again rescues her, forcing Ara to survive another brutal attack. The next six years she becomes an important part of his life – with her intelligence she taken control of his business affairs but mainly rescuing innocents from auction. Her only fault is hiding her deep love for Caine, until the day he announces he must marry money to support the title inherited from his brother. By now, the girls rescued by them are set up in a home and trained if they do not want to return to their original home. Caine and Ara remain together, but each with secrets – Caine honoring his vow to protect Ara, even from himself, and she struggling with the secret she has kept from Caine about Isabella. A story of the depths of evil man can sink to for profit and how society turns a blind eye to such evil. The courage and compassion of Arabella in going back to the horror that will never leave her in order to save just one more from that fate. Destiny finally comes full circle granting each freedom from guilt, redemption and the ability to grasp at life’s most precious gift – Love!!
Ara was bought by Caine from the brothel, supposedly for his amusement. But Caine was looking for his fiancee, Isabella, who had blonde hair like Ara and that’s who he thought he bought, as a rescue, not a toy. In these days of human trafficking, a book like this one has some relevance. Ara and Caine devise a plan for freeing some of the girls who become trapped in these auctions. All are advertised as virgins and they keep getting younger and more frightened every time a new auction is held. But Ara and Caine persevere. Toward the end of the book, it says they had freed 87 women using their method. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could say the same?
plot was poorly thought out and executed. I have read and enjoyed other works by this author and could barely get through this one.
I picked this book up because I needed relief after several taut thriller novels. It was ok, and did what I needed it to do. But, this is not one I will read again.
Unfortunately I posted my written review under the wrong book!
This story is riveting showing strength of women plucked from horrific circumstances and men of honor in an age where title and status rule society
