Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then…nothing. When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, … white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait.
At least the stranger seems kind…but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him. He promised they were alone here, but she sees and hears things that convince her something else is creeping about the surrounding woods, watching. Waiting. Between the claustrophobic storm and the inescapable sense of being hunted, Clare is on edge…and increasingly certain of one thing:
Her car crash wasn’t an accident. Something is waiting for her to step outside the fragile safety of the house… something monstrous, something unfeeling.
Something desperately hungry.

Clare loses control of her car in an early fall snow storm. She wakes up in a large mansion owned by Dorran, who rescued her and brought her home. Trapped for weeks by the snow and cold, they seem to be alone, except that she keeps seeing human-like monsters that he can’t see.
The story is unusally bloody for a Darcy Coates book. A very chaste romance develops, seemingly aimed at young teens, but the violence is more adult. I deducted one star for that. I enjoyed the story. A sequel is coming out in April 2020, and perhaps it will be resolved.
I think it’s one of the best book I’ve ever read.
Loved the survivalist storyline. Hard to predict what was coming next. Very original.
Loved this book! Can’t wait for the next one to come out!
It had a better premise than an actual follow through. The unknown was definitely better than figuring out what was actually happening. Ultimately, I didn’t end up caring out the main characters enough to read the next book, even though it was free on Kindle Unlimited.
A cozy and yet creepy read. Horror apocalyptic fans will love this. This was my first book by Darcy Coates and now I’m a huge fan. Black Winter was my nightly escape. Nothing like blasting your winter asmr and getting lost alongside Clara and Dorran in a huge manor while a monster storm prevents anyone from escaping the things that go bump in the night.
Black Winter hit every thriller need. Some spooks here and there blended with romance and mystery, my absolute cup of tea. Clara and Dorran made quite the team. Their cute/protective interactions were a joy to watch. And their tale isn’t over yet! I’m looking forward to starting book 2!
4.5 from me! This is not a book I would normally read, but Darcy Coates is one of my new favorite authors so I thought I’d give it a try, and it did not disappoint! What a great book. The two main characters have a nice slow burning romance that isn’t in your face all the time. There were also a few twist and turns! I cannot wait for the next book to come out!
Darcy Coates has fast become one of my favorite authors. I eagerly awaited my pre-order of this book and was NOT disappointed. This is a little bit different for her but it is no less fantastic. I can’t wait for the next book!
I thought it was really good
Darcy Coates writes horror in a way that creates both dread at what’s to come and fascination about what the next pages will bring—exactly what I look for in this genre.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Black Winter, but Dorran and Clare’s story created a perfect blend of those qualities and ended at the perfect place to lead up to book two. A blend of horror, apocalypse, and dystopian created a fantastic plot, and I’m waiting with great anticipation for April when book two releases.
I’ve yet to be disappointed by any book this author has written and will continue to work my way through her backlist. Her writing style and story weaving are perfect for those who love Stephen King books. She’s quickly becoming a favorite author I’ll sneak time from my own busy schedule to read.
