I had read several of these stories out of order, and enjoyed them immensely. However, that is not the same as enjoying the series in order. Many of the characters appear in all of the tales, sometimes as the main protagonists and sometimes as background cookies or Easter eggs. And, clearly, each of the stories stands alone; but there is a wonderful story arc carried on in the background of the group of novels allowing you to follow the lives of a number of the families in Cutter’s Creek, if you read the whole series in order.
The pleasure of listening to Paul Curtis narrating and acting the parts as I did my chores, knowing that some of what I did was identical to our forebears’ travails, was enhanced by realizing most of my work was much easier thanks to such innovations as indoor plumbing and hot water on tap. I had planned to include my individual reviews here but several are quite extensive, since the issues described are so varied. Below is a list of the titles; should you wish to learn my exact (positive!) reaction to an individual book, just look it up on the site where you are seeing this:
*The Strong One
*The Betrothed
*Cherished
*Season of Love
*Captivated
*Beguiled
Book one: The Strong One
-‘I only wish I could stop running and find a place to rest. I’m so tired. I have no home on this earth and no family to call my own. No place to lay my head. No one to love me, or to love in return.’-
Sarah learns that she is to be married off to a soldier in order to keep peace between her family’s tribe and the many others who want a piece of her because of her unusual looks. Sarah does not want to marry someone she does not know, has never met, and does not love, so she runs away to avoid such a union. Unfortunately, an unsavoury man catches up with her along her journey and her life and her virtue are threatened several times. She manages to escape but the chances of getting away unscathed become slimmer as each day passes. Will she find someone to keep her safe – and someone to love along the way? Or will she forever be looking over her shoulder and always on the run from danger?
I’m not a huge fan of historical romance (mostly regency type books), but these absolutely grabbed my attention! I loved the series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, back in the day, and these stories brought me back to that era, only these stories are Christian. The author’s writing style is very engaging and I really enjoyed all of the stories in this set. The descriptive writing is captivating and makes it easy to visualize what the author is portraying.
All the stories are very different but my favourites are The Strong One and Captivated. I enjoyed them more because they are so different. It’s a real challenge to find anything else out there like these. In the interest of keeping my review relatively short and not turning off readers by reviewing each book individually, I chose to summarize only the first book in the set. I definitely recommend this collection.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and I did not receive any compensation for my review, nor was I obligated to leave a review. These are my own thoughts and opinions which I willingly share.
