A Psy/Changeling novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian…”the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist).Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then … the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous—aching need…exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.
Changeling Vaughn D’Angelo can take either man or jaguar form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar’s instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith’s sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced—and keep her from Vaughn…

Great world building. I love the author’s vision of the Psy-net and how all the characters have different mental powers. At times I was on the edge of my seat, mentally shouting at the heroine, “Get out! Get out now! Hurry!” A few times the story dragged when the heroine continued to ruminate about the same old stuff. The plot works, but it’s essentially the same formula as book one: Vulnerable heroine must choose to leave her world behind while fighting internal and external forces in order to to live happily ever after with the shifter who is her fated mate.
I’m finally going to read the Psy-Changeling series because I’ve only read the first three books. I know I’m so behind, but I’ll catch up. I did this with Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series on catching up on them, and now 2021 is all about the Psy and Changelings.
The first time I read Visions of Heat was back in 2015, but I never reviewed it. It is time to rectify that since I enjoyed reading the second book to Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series. It was great to re-read Faith and Vaughn’s story and how they met because these two were difficult at first.
Female Protagonist: Faith Nightstar is an F-Psy, which means she can predict the future. She’s one Psy that is fully protected and kept sheltered from everyone and everything else. She’s one Psy with no feelings, but that is not the case, especially after she meets Vaughn the first time. I was taken aback by her character at first until I got to know her. She’s one character who will think positively about the Psy until she realizes the truth about what has already happened. (If you read the first book, you will read about what happened and a continuation of it.)
Male Protagonist: Vaughn D’Angelo is a Jaguar shifter amongst leopard shifters. He’s had a hard life and doesn’t like bringing up his past, especially after what happened to his family. He is a big-time alpha. I think he may even be more alpha than Lucas. I loved how his jaguar was always out more than his human self. He’s more animal than human, and that makes him very unique compared to others. His character came off clingy and curious, especially when it came to Faith. He didn’t know personal space, which drove her crazy and everyone else. I loved him, and I’ll leave it at that; otherwise, I’ll boast about him too much.
Storyline/My Thoughts: The Psy seriously have issues with how they treat their kind. I don’t like the fact they don’t have feelings, and they are blah! If you know what I mean. Also, I wouldn’t say I like how they treated Faith in this book. No wonder why the F-Psy tends to go insane. They don’t get any interaction because they are held prisoner for their predictions. Although, truths start to come out why the F-Psys are going insane when Faith starts doing her research. The F-Psy also are treated like they are fragile, which is not the case with Faith. She’s a fighter in her way. She wants to get away from her kind, and it ends up happening when she reaches out to the changelings for help. Here it is when Vaughn meets Faith. He can’t keep his hands off of her, and he ends up overloading her senses. He knows she’s the one, but he has to learn boundaries. It takes Sascha and the other changelings to realize he needs to back off.
One of many reasons why I’m enjoying this series is due to the world-building and the characters. Here it is that Nalini Singh has created a futuristic world where you have Psy, Bhangelings, etc. Psy thinks they are over everyone else, but they should be worried about the changelings. The different kinds of shifters know how to handle their own. There is a mystery going on since some Psy are starting to realize the world they live in is corrupt. I feel a rebellion about to happen since Faith’s father gives off those vibes in this book. I liked his character. I also loved how Faith finds out the truth about what is going on in this book. Vaughn also makes sure she’s there when she finds out the truth and helps her. These two are complete opposite’s of each other, but they start falling for one another. Faith brings out another side of Vaughn when they are together and vice versa. This book was hard to put down because of everything that was going on. I don’t want to give anything away, so if you haven’t read this book or this series, you should read it.
Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of the Psy-Changeling series. Each follows new characters, but I would recommend reading these in order.
Steaminess: Some Steam.
HEA: Yes
Trope: Fated Mates
Would I recommend this book? Yes. I give this book 4.5 stars and recommend it to Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy readers. Each book so far makes me fall hard for the characters. I love Nalini Singh and the world she creates for each of her series. Both series are very addicting, and I need more of them now.
2nd read: 2021
1st read : a few years ago
Let me start by saying that you really have to read the first book ‘Slave to sensation’ before reading this one. Because although each story in this series is about another couple, in the background of each story you discover more of the Psy/changeling/human world where they live in and with each story more secrets are revealed so I would really recommend that you start this series from the beginning.
Just like ‘Slave to sensation’ I enjoyed this book very much. Vaughn may not be an alpha like Lucas (the main man character in the first book) but he was just as dominant, protective and possessive as Lucas (if not, even more!). Vaughn’s animal is a jaguar. Vaughn was adopted in the DarkRiver pack when he was 10 years old. He may not have been born there but his loyalty to his alpha Lucas and his pack is soul deep. But now one Psy woman is testing that loyalty. Faith’s a F-Psy, in the Psy world she’s viewed as something very special but also very fragile. Faith is so protected by her family clan and by the Psy rules that she’s almost a prisoner in her own house. From the first moment that Faith and Vaughn meet, they are both curious about each other. From first glance Vaughn and his cat knows that Faith may look fragile but she has a very strong core. She is stronger than the Psy think she is, even stronger then she herself thinks. And he will prove it to her, touch by touch. But he has to be careful, not only for the Psy watching her every move or her fragile mind but also for the darkness that is haunting her visions.
Faith has grown up very protective and alone. She has never met humans or changelings before now. But she knows from the first glance that Vaughn and his jaguar cat are very dangerous not only to her body but also for her cold Psy heart. But she also feels safe when Vaughn is near, safe from the fragments of her Psy mind and safe for the dark visions that frighten her. Vaughn may be reserved and can push her very hard but he can also be very caring en gentle when she needs it. And Faith isn’t afraid to push back when she needs to.
Danger is coming closer and closer to Faith from every side, can Vaughn keep her safe against the darkness and the Psy council or will he lose her to madness in the end?
The story was told from both POV’s, sometimes it was emotional and intense but it was never too dark. The interaction between Vaughn and Faith was very entertaining, both were strong characters, who pushed each other in just the right places. It was lovely to see the characters from the previous book again and to meet new characters. In this story we again learned more about the Psy/changeling world.
I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.
Faith NightStar is being tormented by dark visions of blood and death. This is a bad sign for an F-Psy of her caliber. The only person who she thinks can help her is Sasha Duncan, who is no longer part of the psy network. Changeling Vaughan D’Angelo is drawn to Faith. Something about her set him and his jaguar off. While working through the desire both of them feel danger is right around the corner.
I loved this book just as much as I did the first one. Not only is this world fascinating but the characters are so unique and captivating, it’s hard to put the books down. Vaughan and Faith are both great characters. I couldn’t put their story down.
Faith is a very brave and strong woman who is facing the darkest emotions of the human psych. Vaughn is a protective, alpha male who is very touchy feely and territorial. Vaughn feels a lot darker than Lucas did but he was extremely sweet with Faith. The intensity between these two was off the charts and I loved every minute of it.
We also learn more about how Psy society and the NetMind works. The overarching plot is quite fascinating and I am really interested in seeing where it goes, especially in relation to the council.
Overall, this was a great sequel and I cannot wait to dive into the next one.
The world is very different in this future timeline. There are three races: Psy, changelings, and humans. The Psy use their x-men-esque powers to control the world. Changelings are shape shifters. And as we all know, humans are resilient lol. Sascha is a Psy with a very serious flaw: she is not the perfectly conditioned, emotionless being she is supposed to be. As a very powerful empath, she is in constant danger from everyone including her own mother. When she acts as her mother’s liaison for a business deal with the local changeling pack, she meets Lucas. Lucas and his pack are either going to be her one shot at avoiding a death sentence from her own people or her executioners. This is some of the best world building out there, and this enormous cast of characters are all worth getting to know! Happy Reading!
I love Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series. Book 1 is brilliant, and everyone remembers it. Yet Book 2 with Faith and Vaughn sealed my commitment to the series.
Visions of Heat has another Psy/Changeling pairing. This is Vaughn and Faith’s story. I did like the first book better but this was still very good. I think I wanted to see this couple have more time together in the book.
Vaughn is one of my favorite types of heroes. He quiet, deadly with a very strong presence. He comes off a bit cold. Faith is the exact opposite. She comes off as very innocent and sweet but still has a backbone. I liked these two paired together.
Another interesting plot and much more to discover.
Another hit by Nalini Singh and a must read for any shifter fans. Such a unique world this author built and yet it doesn’t distract us from the romance taking place. Unique, beautiful, and wonderfully written. Vaughn is a definite addition to my book boyfriends!
VISIONS OF HEAT is the exciting second installment to the Psy-Changeling series!
I absolutely enjoyed delving deeper into this complex world of emotionless, robotic Psy and exceptionally diverse changeling clans—animal shapeshifters.
Faith NightStar is a strong F-Psy (foreseer) that’s been caged and heavily monitored all her life. She’s been conditioned to foresee business trends in order to make companies, and her PsyClan, very, very wealthy. But when visions of a cold-blooded killer start to invade her vision, she worries that her mind is cracking, giving way to madness and insanity that often affects F-Psys. In order to find answers for her mind break, she journeys deep into the heart of DarkRiver territory to find Sacha, the one Psy that’s not connected to PsyNet—a mental World Wide Web where information is stored and all of the Psy race’s minds and life forces are connected. As she breaches the boundaries, she’s stopped by a very powerful and very angry jaguar. And thus begins a thrilling and deadly story full of danger and passion and betrayal and heartache. And of redemption.
Faith is a powerful heroine, fighting and internal battle within herself as well as an external battle with a possessive and stubborn jaguar. Vaughn is an extremely angry and aggressive feline changeling, adopted into the DarkRiver leopard pack many years ago. He’s more cat than man and rough around the edges, but is fiercely loyal and honor bound to his clan and to the fiery red-headed Psy that’s captured his cat’s interest. Their coupling was an exercise in patience.
There are also some great scenes with the DarkRiver packmates as well as some surprises with a few unusual characters in the story! I’m really looking forward to the next book!
I read VISIONS OF HEAT for the first time in 2012 but couldn’t really appreciate the nuances of the story and of the complexities of the Psy parts of the book. After rereading the story, I’m able to appreciate it so much more and pen my thoughts more adequately.
I whole-heartedly recommend this and any book by Nalini Singh! Her storytelling is exquisite!
Love love love this series so so much ,it’s just plain awesome 🙂
Vaughn is just so yummy 🙂 ,I love how he reacts to Faith ,it’s just so great to see how much she intrigues Vaughn ,I loved everything about his book 🙂 He is just so sexy male and it’s great to see that he has a playful side too .
I really liked Faith ,I that she is just so drawn to Vaughn from the start ,it’s funny to see how much he unnerves her at the beginning ,I thought it was cool how to finally accepts her power and learns how to use it to help people .it was great to see them fall in love 🙂 .
Love love love this book ,it’s even better then the 1st one of the series 🙂 Must Read ,you won’t regret it
Working my way through this series and loving it.
Visions of Heat’ is book 2 in Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling Series. Once again Nalini doesn’t disappoint. Nalini is the QUEEN of Paranormal/Fantasy writing. I love, love, love reading this series. I really enjoyed reading this book and getting to know a little more about Vaughn.
Spoilers below…
Faith NightStar is a F-Psy, someone that has the ability to see the future. Faith has always been alone and isolated, afraid to have any connection with anyone in case she is over stimulated and has a seizure and ends up like a potato. She is worth billions, helping out business predict the best option. But she starts having dark visions of death, and of a Jaguar staring at her.
Vaughn D’Angelo is a Jaguar Changeling and one of Lucas Sentinels. Lucas has always felt as a lone outcast, even though he and Lucas are very close friends and a sentinel being alone has what he’s beast has always wanted. Until he has this pull to a guarded Psy compound and a certain red head Psy.
Will Vaughn be able to protect Faith from this dark presence or will it overcome her? All I can say is read the book and find out, you won’t be disappointed.
I liked this book just as much as the first one. I loved Faith and I liked Vaughn. I loved the plot. I actually liked Faith’s dad and I can’t wait to see if the Psy rebel. Vaughn and Faith had a nice connection and I enjoyed reading about Faith letting go of her fear of touch. Overall I am really enjoying this series and I can’t wait for book 3.
