I liked this, but I didn’t love it the way I did the previous two books. I still love the characters and world. And there were certainly some emotional moments in this one. And those things have raised the stakes.
But most of the book felt like a set up for future things. Laying groundwork for a series is important, but the individual book should also have it’s own story. It was just a little lacking in this one.
One of my favorites in this series. We learn more about the Others and see the various levels and what they each contribute. Even after a number of re-reads this book has some parts that make me teary. Meg is learning more about herself and her skills and trying to help the the other girls. The Others are dealing with the HFL people and what is being stirred up. I loved seeing more of the Ferryman’s and seeing everyone sort of come together, even with a few setbacks. This is a great series!
Book 3 in the Others series. I love these books and have been rereading them about every 3 months.
Vision In Silver (A Novel of the Others Book 3) Kindle Edition
by Anne Bishop
Anne Bishop’s talent for creating a large cast of characters is put to the test in in VIS. The cast is also complex and interesting. From the HFL leader Nicholas Scratch to Elayne Borden to the Lizzy, Ms. Borden’s daughter, to Meg and Simon, the heart of the story, each character is so real, they could walk out of my Kindle.
The Others, the terra indigene, who inhabit the North American Continent in a complex and frightening way. The Others include vampires, shifters, and witches. Meg is a blood prophet, a young woman who can prophecize when her skin is cut. Most of the blood prophets become addicted to the rush of the prophecy and cut themselves. This is a bit of a trigger warning if the reader has a history of ‘cutting’ or other forms of self mutilation. Bishop handles this with the same respect and compassion as she did with the darker, cruel themes in her Black Jewels series.
This third installment of the series brings more humans into contact with the Others. In some cases, particularly that of Lizzie and her father, those interactions are for the better. Humans First and Last, however, with their anger toward the others and who believe is a warped version of Manifest Destiny. Bit by bit, a crime story blends with an alternative history nicely with the relationships in the Courtyard. The crime? A child takes a train, alone, to see her father, Monty, at the Courtyard. In her hands is a love worn Boo Bear. Inside that bear, there is a discovery waiting to be made.
Bishop uses the limited third person narration in an amazing way. The voice or style of writing fits into the character it follows. The cassandra sange, for instance, seem to have a problem with over-stimulation. When the narration focus on them, there is a theme of new things wearing them down. It is quite easy to identify whom the focus is. Authors with smaller casts can’t do it with the grace of Bishop.
Several minor plot lines revolve around the main concerning the secret Boo Bear is hiding. They are braided together with expertise.
I highly recommend any and all Anne Bishop books. She is a rare talent who can see the light in the darkest of souls.

If you follow my book reviews, you know that I am working my way through The Others book series. What can I say I fell in love at the very first Simon Wolfguard growl and haven’t looked back.
Vision in Silver is a thickening of the characters and story. It is a stepping stone to the conclusion. There was nothing about it that took my breath away, but also everything about it kept me engaged and still wanting to know more of the story.
The Others is a great book series for anyone that loves fantasy, shifters (especially wolf shifters), and a book series that never fails to delight the reader.
Just how did a male (Simon is not a man, thank you very much) who generally despises humans end up becoming such a significant influencer in combating the social injustice of human trafficking? Oh yeah – he decided to protect a victim of human trafficking. Well, all good deeds must be punished – now, he has to figure what to do with all the rescued (in addition to helping the girl he is apparently falling for kick her addiction). Sometimes, being the good guy does not seem to pay.
Anne Bishop always delivers a good fantasy story
I read this one a couple years ago, and then re-read it recently, and it was definitely better the second go-around than the first. I really enjoy reading about the interactions between the humans and the Others, and I adore how much they dote on the heroine. The chemistry between her and the hero is fantastic.
This series is slow-burning, and there are definitely times when it could have been trimmed down to move faster, but I really enjoyed it. It’s not deep or though-provoking, but it’s full of pure entertainment, which is exactly what I needed.
As a very minor side note, I cannot believe she named a character Lizzie Borden. It messed me up every time I read it, because I kept thinking of the axe-wielding murderer…
CONTENT WARNING: There’s a handful of f-bombs, so if that bothers you, this probably isn’t the book for you.
The series keeps going strong. The rift between humans and the Others is worsening, with deadly consequences. For all the buildup in the book, the conflict fizzled out, but it’ll likely pick up in the next book. This one was more about personal stories. Interesting characters that the reader bonds with are the strength of the series. Monty and his daughter were the heart of this one, but Simon and Meg continued their curious courtship too, with Simon wondering if he should become more human for her. We’ll see how that’ll turn out.
This is the third installment in the Others series and you are transported back into the world with Meg and Simon. I absolutely love this series and getting to experience a world full of different beings that I have never come across. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
This series provides a different and much needed point of view.
The story picks up where we left off in Murder of Crows. In the aftermath of prior events, and because the Humans First and Last movement stirred a lot of trouble, there is a shift in the dynamic between humans and terra indigene.
Let’s not forget that the Others commonly think of humans as ‘smart meat’ that invents things they can use. But if humans become a threat, the terra indigene population might consider living without the human-made products. Especially if the usually hidden and extremely dangerous ancient terra indigene (known as the Elders) decide the extinction of the human race. The tension and the danger that comes with it is best summed up by Captain Burke’ s joke:
“Do you know what happened to the dinosaurs? The Others is what happened to the dinosaurs. A joke Captain Burke had told him his first day on the job in Lakeside. Except it wasn’t a joke. Burke had known that, at least to some degree. And now so did he.”
The new relationship is strained at best with one exception: the human pack that forms around Meg Corbyn. And this pack seems ever growing while the terra indigene reluctantly accepts them in their midst.
We get to see more our favorite policeman, Monty and see him interact with his daughter Lizzy who comes for a surprise visit. The gory reason behind this visit keeps the story from dragging. Needless to say, Lizzy joins the human pack at the Courtyard. Being a child and a little bit spoiled she manages to stir some trouble for Meg.

Once again, Bishop’s writing is strong and smooth, and the story flows quickly for an easy read.
My one complaint is that Meg, while still referenced as a pivotal character, is barely a character at all. She shows up a couple of times, but more as an object or catalyst than a character. The action of the story generally takes place far from her.
This book does not stand alone. It is a bridge that encompasses cleaning up the loose ends of the preceding book, and setting up the conflict of the next one.
I really like the plot and storyline for this series. That’s what’s really keeping me interested in the series. I also enjoy learning more about the various characters in the courtyard as well as Lakeside and now the other areas of the country. Having said that though, the relationship between Simon and Meg is really boring and I much prefer reading about Megs relationships with the other characters. Those are much interesting than what’s going on (or what’s not going on) between Simon and Meg.
Anne Bishop is in the same class as McCaffrey and Kurtz when it comes to world building.
Vision in Silver is the 3rd book in the Others series, following Written in Red and Murder of Crows. Since the first book, Written in Red, I have cruised through this series, unable to put it down. I have LOVED all of the books in this series. I love the characters, I love the unique world that Anne Bishop has built. I think the view point of the Others is unique; it’s so refreshing that the supernatural creatures are definitely not human and have their own unique non-human view of the world. I can’t recommend this entire series highly enough. Each book basically picks up right where the last one left off, and you do feel – going from book to book – that this entire story is moving towards some kind of climax. I just finished the 4th book; can’t wait to start the 5th.
I won this book on Goodreads giveaway and I’m so glad I did. This past week I’ve read the first 2 books and fell in love with the world and characters. I’m not looking forward to waiting for the next book, I want it now! This series is a must read! Suspenseful and sweet, terrifying and amazing.
Getting better with each book. This is the 3rd book of a 5 book series.
