Love is a void. Something we’re taught we need if we want to live a happy and fulfilled life.
Well I disagree.
Some say I’m a cynic. Other’s call me the smartest woman they’ve ever met.
But no matter what anyone says, I know what I need. And love is not it.
Enter Harris Avery.
A man who thinks he can have anyone he wants, including me.
A man who reminds me daily why I swore off love in the first place.
He walks around the office like he owns the place, throwing that sexy smirk of his at every female he passes. He thinks no one is immune to his charm.
But poor Mr. Avery has never met a girl like me before.
I’m more likely to throw myself off a bridge than at his feet.
There’s just one problem…
He’s decided to make it his mission to prove me wrong.
To that I say, let the games begin…
Violets are not Blue is a complete standalone.

Blue Daniels hates love and doesn’t believe that it exists after catching her now ex-fiance cheating on her. She is a business analyst for a medical technology firm and is best friends with Hannah who is trying to convince her that she just hasn’t met the right guy yet.
Harris Avery is a really good looking guy that works with Blue but she also sees all the women fawning all over him and knows his reputation of getting around the office.
One night Harris and Blue end up making a bet and it’s Blue’s heart on the line. How far is Blue willing to go to protect her heart even when she realizes she could be wrong?
I liked this book but I must admit that at times I really wanted to strangle Blue.
I understood why Blue didn’t believe in love anymore but at the same time she had only been in two “real” relationships and she was basing everything off that and even though her parents had a great marriage. She was so cynical and after a while it drove me crazy.
Harris was such a playboy at the beginning of the book yet once he “pledged” himself to Blue he was so dedicated to her and I loved all of the little things he did for her. I loved the flowers and even the smallest detail like writing on the cards and making poems. I thought the ball game was an incredible touch and how Harris really went all out for her. At the same time Harris’s past caught up to him a few times in the book and I felt bad for Blue but she was always quick to assume the worst.
Harris to me showed right from the beginning that he wasn’t playing a game with Blue and he was constantly checking up on her to make sure that she was ok and that he would be there for her. When she was away he was checking up on her and she really appreciated that but at the same time she would tell herself that it wasn’t true and that’s what was killing me about the whole thing. Blue would feel appreciated and loved and then she would tell herself that it wasn’t real and that she couldn’t feel that way so she wouldn’t.
I understood why Blue was so upset after the hospital and the dilemna she was faced with but again she blocked out Harris even though he said he would be there for her regardless of any outcome. Yet once again she pushed him away and by then I was honestly getting tired of it and I thought Harris should save himself the heartache and just run in the other direction.
When Blue finally realizes how she feels she shows up at Harris’s to only jump to the wrong conclusion again but lucky for her, he was crazy about her and did what he could to make everything better.
The end was great and I was happy that Blue finally realized love could happen!
Another incredibly amazing and really well written book by this author. I truly love every book I have read by her and this was no different. In fact its one of my favorites by far. These two characters just had my heart from the very beginning and did not let go at all. I kept turning the pages, not being able to put it down at all.
The only reason I gave this book such a high rating is because of Harris. I absolutely LOVED him but didn’t get the appeal of Blue. He obviously saw something I didn’t. He was charming and romantic. Yes he attracted the ladies and may have had some fun along the way but when it came to Blue, he put his heart out there and had it smashed so many times. She held up the walls until the end of the book. I get that she was burned by several bad relationships that made her hate love but she was determined to hold onto that and not let her heart feel. I mean I would have been swooning at some of the things he did for her. Maybe I’m Hannah, her best friend. She was swooning at everything he did. She was also a smart woman. She finally broke down the walls on Blue. Made her see what all he was doing was because he truly cared and loved her. Made her open her eyes for once and see he wasn’t a bad guy. He was one of the good ones. I didn’t really connect with Blue. I wanted to smack more times in this book. I mean it was obvious he was into her, everyone saw it but her. Ugh she makes me mad just thinking about it. This book will annoy you but you will also fall hard for Harris, he is book boyfriend material.
Blue is decidedly off love.
Her coworker, Harris Avery is a manwhole. He was interested in Blue but his boss made him stay away. Unfortunately, he swims frequently in the office sea (ew, so gross). He’s relentless in his pursuit of her once Robert retires and they start working more together. And there’s that thing with the four week bet…
Will Harris grow up and man up?
I liked Blue but has a much harder time with Harris.

Great story!!! Blue Daniels and Avery Harris are amazing!! This was the first time book that I have read by this author and I’m hooked!! The story flowed and kept me wanting more…you won’t be disappointed!!
I didn’t think it was possible for me to swoon over a “womanizer,” but Harris wore me down. He pulled out all the stops to win Blue over, and I probably would have caved within minutes. He didn’t just walk the walk, he talked the talk. With his confident, with a little cocky, attitude and his cute little gestures. If Blue doesn’t want him, I’d take him!
“Roses may be red,
But violets are not BLUE.
I don’t think it’s any secret
That I’m falling for you.
Have I won yet?”
Melissa Toppen was the best author I have stumbled upon and she quickly became one of my favourite authors. I did not think that Melissa would be able to top Fin & ables’s story but this one comes right even! Thank
In Violets are not Blue, We meet Blue and Harris who both work in the same medical technology firm:
Blue has been burned by men before on Her life & takes an instant dislike to the way Harris “uses” women.
Harris has an instant draw towards Blue but has been warned off but he office grandpa.
Harris is everything most women want in a man including never backing down against a woman who makes her dislike for you plain as day.
I love the the back and forth banter between Blue and Harris, their love hate relationship makes them that much more relatable to the reader.
Violets are not Blue is a sweet, sexy office romance between Blue and Harris. Blue is totally against relationships, doesn’t believe in love, and thinks Harris is nothing but a playboy, but these two have an undeniable chemistry. A silly bet between the two leads to more than Blue ever bargained for and takes us on a journey with humor, steam, drama, and a great HEA ending.
Once again, Melissa writes us a beautiful story of love and the complications of love and the choices that come with it. I couldnt be more excited about a book than this one. Its everything and more. Harris is adorable and arrogant in many ways and Blue is just apprehensive and scared. Perfect match considering both of their histories.

Violets are not Blue is another out of the park smash for Melissa Toppen.
Blue has experienced her share of heartache and disappointment when it comes to love and therefore she has decided she is not willing to get into a relationship with anyone. So when Harris, the man she believes to be a womanizer and man whore from work shows interest she puts her walls up. Harris however, is drawn to Blue and is determined to show her that he is not what she things.
One night Harris decides to take a chance and hits on Blue. During this process they make a bet….Harris will not have sex with anyone for thirty days and in those thirty days he will get Blue to fall in love with him. She doesn’t think there is anyway he could hold out or make her fall in love with him.
Watching these two develop their friendship/relationship during this time was so fun to read. They are fun and sweet and romantic and hot. I fell in love with both of these characters who were so well developed that it was as if I knew them.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
This book was such a cute romantic comedy.
The story is well written and very enjoyable.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
They say there is a fine line between love and hate. Well that is almost how this starts between Blue and Harris, she thought she hated him, hated everything about him, his arrogance especially. Harris has always had a secret crush on Blue. Kinda sounds like it might be a disaster waiting to happen hey? Well so very wrong, I had some many diffy feels with this read, and even laughed out loud a few times. Another amazing read by Melissa Toppen
So loved this cute, laugh out loud, romantic comedy! The story is adorable and I so loved how Harris woods and won the love of Blue! Just a wonderfully fun story with a perfect happy ending

Loved Harris & Blue’s story! They were so different and I loved how competitive they were. Their chemistry was off the charts! I loved every page of their story, definitely had some lol moments throughout. Highly recommend!
Another emotional love story that will have you needing tissues and laughing out load. The characters in this book were easy to relate to and I enjoyed the witty banter. This was a slow burn romance not too much angst which I tend to lose interest with but the writing really hooked me in. I loved the story line and the love letters left behind they showed a fun yet romantic side. I don’t want to give anything away but you really should pick up a cop you won’t be disappointed.
Melissa Toppen is a “must-read” author for me and while I absolutely love everything she writes, I was very glad for this ‘lighter’ read. When my tears fell this time, they were tears of happiness and connection with the characters–not sadness—which is exactly what I needed after her last two books. I found there was a little angst, but it only enhanced the story and the tingly feelings when things got better.
Harris and Blue’s story was the perfect remedy to my rather mundane and boring love life. After the courting comes ‘real-life’ and Violets Are Not Blue allowed me to escape that and reminisce. Harris had me longing for the special “date nights” and “butterflies” that go along with a new relationship. Their unconventional pairing made way for them to drop their guard a bit, perhaps pretend what they were feeling wasn’t real, but ultimately neither one could deny that they may actually be made for each other.
Harris went from a player to a romantic in about 6 seconds, I think he may have surprised himself as well. Blue brought out the man in him who longed for commitment and that little something more. Blue on the other hand is a die-hard non-believer in all things love related, so Harris had his job cut out for him. For every step forward Harris took, Blue contrived some kind of excuse to block her heart from feeling, but I don’t think any woman would every be able to ward off those “Violets Are Not Blue” love poems for ever. Blue gave him a run for his money but he never gave up, he saw through her facade and kept the faith. He melted my heart and was winning every step of the way.
I must say that although Blue frustrated me a time a two and had me wondering just what she needed from Harris to get on board with his declarations of love, I did enjoy her character and the easy connection they seemed to find. I enjoyed feeling the twinkle in her eyes when Harris seemed to do everything right and brought back her belief that maybe love does exist. Harris redeemed himself over and over in my eyes and he can take me to a ball game any day!
I love office-romance, it’s one of my favourite tropes, so I absolutely fell hook, line, and sinker for Harris and all his office antics when it came to Blue. I totally recommend this contemporary romance written in dual POV for the romantics out there who just want a feel-good book to curl up with on a weekend.
4.5 Fluttering Stars!
This story gave new meaning the Roses are Red, Violets are Blue love poems….I loved that Harris used his own twist on this in his persistence to show Blue that he isn’t the guy she thinks he is. Harris’ ingenuity in coming up with his bet with Blue provided the perfect story line for this one. It was Fun, it was Sweet, it got Hot, it was Romantic and it kept me swiping pages! I liked that Blue stayed true to herself; she was strong, determined and had the right amount of spunk to keep Harris on his toes. This was the most original and fun office romance that I have read in a long time.
Violets Are Not Blue is absolutely my favorite book that I’ve read by Melissa Toppen. This book was fun, witty, and sexy. Blue Daniels is a love cynic. She’s been burned by a man one too many times and no longer believe it’s in her future. Harris Avery is the office playboy who has set his sights on Blue. He wants to date her, she wants nothing to do with his womanizing ways. They make a bet that leads them to spending more time together. She finds out he’s not as bad as she thought. I loved the witty banter they threw back and forth. They had insane chemistry and Harris turned out to be really sweet and romantic. I highly recommend this story to everyone who enjoys well written, fun loving romance.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie’s Book Reports.

This is an office romance that begins when Blue is paired off with Harris who is the guy in the office that everyone considers a playboy. However Blue is against love in any shape form or fashion. She lives her life in such a way that it is the same thing every day. Work, gym repeat. Harris has made up his mind that he is going to pursue her in the office from nine to five. This could have possibly been a cute little office romance but holy cow these characters really got on my nerves. I don’t know how many times it is said that Blue doesn’t believe in love or anything to do with it. I got it she doesn’t want to be in love. Which leads me to Harris who for being a “playboy” he sure doesn’t know how to pick them. Blue neither like him or trusted him so I don’t get why he was so adamant about pursuing her. This story dragged on and on and on for me and I had to lay it down way to many times and work up the nerve to pick it up again. I have read several of Melissa Toppen’s books and while this one had the potential to be amazing it fell short for me.
Blue and Harris’ story is beautifully written, with witty banter, and is an all round enemies / lovers, entertaining read. The only down side, in my opinion only, is that Blue had me frustrated with her anti relationship mind set, and I just wanted to shake her at times. I recommend for all, and I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
