The adventures of Jake Wolfe and his war dog Cody continue with Vigilante Assassin, Jake Wolfe Novel-Book 2. We met all the main characters—Jake Wolfe and his war dog Cody, Sarah Chance, Cody’s veterinarian and Jakes love interest, Lieutenant Terrell Hayes, and many others in Book 1, Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie. In my review of Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie, you don’t have to read these novels in the order in which they were written in order to enjoy them, but to get the most enjoyment out of them, but to understand the developing relationships between the main characters, read them in order.
Vigilante Assassin begins right where Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie leaves off. I’ve only read books 1 and 2 so far, the stories appear to build on the ones that proceeded them. Vigilante Assassin begins with Jake and Cody rescuing two kidnapped children from the Russian Mafia in the city by the Bay. During that operation, he discovers that he, his war dog Cody are on the Russian Mafia’s kill list, along with many of his friends, the chief of police, the mayor, and many other important personages. In their attempt to kill Jake, they kidnap Sarah Chance. To rescue Sarah, Jake recruits the help of an Italian Mafia, which almost costs him his friendship with Terrell Hayes. Against all odds, Jake completes his mission. To discover how he does that, read this heart pounding thriller for yourself. But beware, although this episode comes to a satisfying conclusion, the anticlimax is a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting to read book 3 to find out what happens to Jake, Cody and their friends next. I bought the first three volumes as a box set, but now I will have to buy books 4, 5 and 6 to complete the series. I’m hooked
I love both characters in this book and loved them equally. In fact if I had to choose between Jake and Cody, I’d have to think a long time. Even though Cody is a dog, I’d have to think about it.
All kidding aside, Mark Nolan has written another book full of action and full of interaction. The thing about this series is that the characters Nolan has crafted are as interesting as his stories. One never takes away from the other. I’m sure this story is good enough to stand by itself, but I sure wouldn’t want to read it without Jake and Cody and their friends.
This is one of those “can’t put it down” kind of books. Better plan on having some free time although it’s a fast read, too.
Vigilante Assassin (Jake Wolfe #2) is the next amazing addition to the series is just as gripping and suspenseful as the first book with lots of action and danger, drama and thrills. Once again there are lots of twists and turns and you are thrown into the unknown and just have to hang on for dear life.
Jake Wolfe and Cody once again is drawn in to the danger that seems to follow him around. He is a good guy but cannot stand violence against others or those in need, including animals if he can do something about it. Jake will do everything in his power to keep them safe.
Lauren Stephens finds her husband is missing and calls in a security team to help locate him. When Jake and Cody follow along they discover a gruesome sight that causes Lauren to realise she did not know her husband at all. But this discovery leads to a dangerous and volatile situation and now she and her children are in extreme danger.
This fast paced read is completely enthralling and I read it in one sitting because it is so good that you don’t want to waste a minute in finding out what is going on.

What did I like? This is book two in Mark Nolan’s series of Jake Wolfe mystery thrillers and I have read both. If you read my review of Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie you will know that I really loved the book and could hardly put it down. Vigilante Assassin is even more thrilling and addicting than the first. I absolutely love Jake and Cody! I have known men that have been through some of the things that Jake experienced and I was so taken with the sincere effort to remaining true to the truth.
@ddeegott What will you like? Characters that are so exciting, intoxicating and provocative. A storyline that is mind-numbing, intriguing, tantalizing, enchanting and fascinating. The relationship between Jake and Cody is poignant and unbelievable. The extraordinary training that Cody has gone through is awesome. I wish I had a dog that smart, I am sure all of us would. The ingenuity of both in these mind-boggling, heart-stopping and hair-raising situations that they get into is enthralling. Jake’s love for his dog and inspiring need to help the helpless or needy would be an inspiration to the world… if we could just get them to read this book! I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
This second book in the Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan does not disappoint the reader in terms of action, adventure, loyalty, and romance. The characters are still living and operating in a very dramatic and dangerous world this second time around. The author still pays great homage to military war dogs and their handlers, law enforcement agencies of all types, and the military branches and their sacrifice and service to our country. This is another story of Jake becoming the government’s private assassin, as well as of him trying to stay alive period while being hunted and shot at by various criminal organizations. This book continues with the developing romance between Jake and Sarah while testing its boundaries between them. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books that was due in 2018.

The Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan is this author’s first published work releasing in 2016. The series, named after the main character, Jake Wolfe, is a thriller, suspenseful, action series. The story is told mostly from Jake’s POV but there are lots of other POV’s to keep the reader involved in the many different storylines happening. I would highly recommend reading these books in the appropriate order as they follow the same characters and recurring storylines happen.
The second book, Vigilante Assassin, carries on from the first book. Jake had a lot of changes to his life in the first book but some things don’t change. This story starts with a threat against Jake, and just another normal explosion. Jake’s need to rescue women is the focus as he and Cody are brought in to help with a missing person case. Jake and Cody quickly solve it by finding a body, but things go big from there. Just as with the first book, there are many storylines happening in this one. Jake has made a name for himself and everyone wants him. The Secret Service and the President want him to handle issues for them, the private company wants him on their payroll, lots of bad guys want him, and Jake is trying to figure out what’s best for his life.
This book was not as long as the previous book, which I appreciated. There was a whole world set up in the first one, so it was easier to just get into all the craziness immediately of Jake’s life without the build up. Jake and Cody make a great team and this book really showed the partnership between them. This book really builds upon the first one, and I liked Jake even more. He struggles with his past and what the government is asking him to do. He’s a man strong in his convictions and his need to serve the government, despite the damage it’s doing to him.
Something I always look for in books I read are strong, multi-dimensional females and I think this author has done a great job writing them. I did have some concerns in the first book at first, but that opinion changed as I went through the book. He has a couple of great, kick-ass female characters who don’t need anyone to save them. I loved Sarah from her first introduction in book one and I’m happy that she’s still around. She may look like a sweet little veterinarian, but she proves otherwise.
I will absolutely be reading the next book in the series, and can’t wait to see what craziness awaits Jake and Cody. If you enjoy action, thriller, suspense, and mysteries you really need to read this series!
Rating: 4.5 stars
This is another Jake Wolfe thriller that will keep you mesmerized. The true hero of this series is Cody, a war dog with PTSD who will do anything for his handler and those in his care. Jake and Cody will make you laugh, bring you to tears, share their experiences and introduce you to the people that live in their world. If you like books with dogs, Marines, terrorists or action packed adventures, this book has everything you need and more.
Jake Wolfe and his service dog Cody are back, and all he wants is a quiet life. But life has other plans for him and once again he is embroiled in yet another thrilling story. Murder, kidnappings and twists that will keep you an the edge of your seat, you are definitely in for a thrilling read.
What starts out as a missing husband soon becomes so much more, when he is found dead in a secret room in the house. This starts a chain of events that involve Jake and Cody delving deep into car chases, gun fights and kidnappings. For me Cody stole the show – I loved him the first book and even more so in this one, the relationship that he has with his master Jake is something else and I have heard a lot about the abilities of military service dogs which Nolan manged to convey brilliantly.
I was critical of the first book being too long, but now in hindsight I can see why as it really set Jake’s character and delved deep into his past – whilst you do not need to have read Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie before as this is easily a stand alone, I do recommend reading it though as it will give you a better insight to why Jake is the person he is now,
Jake Wolfe is looking to enjoy some peaceful moments after the hell he went through in Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie. Spending time with his girlfriend, Sarah, his dog Cody on his friend’s yacht is an ideal way for him to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet he craves. However, all who knows Jake, peace and quiet is fleeting as trouble always finds him. Just as he started to enjoy the moment, someone made an attempt on his life, and in true Jake Wolfe style, he eliminated the threat. However, he would find himself caught up in a world of murder, kidnappings, blackmail, drug trafficking and the mafia, but then this is a typical day for Jake.
When I first met Jake and Cody in Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie, I enjoyed spending time with them and in the process Cody stole my heart. The feeling intensified in this installment. Watching them working together warmed my heart. They had a close bond, and they would die to protect each other. No disrespect to Jake, but for me Cody is the hero. A former military dog who is highly intelligent, courageous and loyal. He can be dangerous but only to those who posed a threat. This is not say Jake did not have his positive points. He is protective by nature, especially with women, children and animals. He had zero tolerance towards persons who would seek to inflict cruelty on them.
I had the chance to catch up with old characters. Introducing new players added to the intensity of the story. Jake’s girlfriend proved a force to reckon with. She sure has some mad fighting skills, which made her a perfect match for Jake.
Vigilante Assassin is an action packed, fast paced read, which will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the story. It will have you turning the pages as you satisfy your sense curiosity regarding the unfolding of the events. I have to admit there were aspects of the story was unbelievable, but then its fiction.
Conclusion/Recommendation
A well-written thriller, Vigilante Assassin lived up to my expectations by providing me with all the ingredients I enjoy in a thriller. If you enjoy fast paced thrillers, then this would be a great addition to your library.
Wolfe and his dog are the heroes here and they have their hands full trying to protect this wife and kids from unknown killers.
Cody the ex military dog caught my attention right from the first! But Jake Wolfe is a likable good guy who has returned from military service with a lot of unhappy memories, but still is a guy who protects his dog with PTSD, Cody, women, close friends and fights Evil doers. I thought the book was fast paced and exciting and Cody adds some humorous breaks that I loved. I will be watching for the next book.
The dog, Cody is way too intelligent to be real.
This book was better than the first. Can’t wait for the next one.
Love the protagonist. He’s truly one of a kind!
I hated to see this book end…loved Jake and Cody too!!
could not finish it. too silly.
I loved Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie and Vigilante!! I can’t wait for him to write the next Jake Wolfe book!! A great writer!!
Implausible but enjoyable
Loved it! I love Jake. I’d give the story 4 stars, but Cody gets it the extra star – one the smartest and coolest dogs on the planet! Cody and Jake are a great team; they think alike. This was a great book 2 in the Jake Wolfe series. I’d recommend Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie as well – read it first!
enjoyable well written box
