Special Forces soldier and medic Walter River would give anything to snatch more than a few seconds of down time to see if he can rattle the no-nonsense and incredibly hot Dr. Lloyd he’s protecting, but dodging explosions, snipers, and student radicals who’ve unleashed a lethal bio-engineered microorganism have made that almost impossible. Maybe he’ll get a chance—if he can figure out how to keep … keep them both alive.
CDC microbiologist Ava Lloyd races to find a cure for a bio-terrorism organism sweeping El Paso. The few stolen moments with her very hunky bodyguard River have been explosive, but no matter how alluring he is, she can’t afford to get distracted. The clock is ticking, people are dying by the hundreds, and once this crisis is solved, they’ll both be off on their next assignment, thousands of miles apart.

Great series. I have enjoyed reading all of the books
Excellent from start to finish. Enjoyed the characters and storyline.
It was thought provoking
topical story line, given current events.
Outstanding page-turner. Engaging from beginning to end.
Just when you thought you were safe… a fictional reality that was almost too true/real it put you into a super scared mode throughout. I wanted to finish just to feel safe. Extraordinarily well written.
Craziness. That honestly with the climate of the world today with the pandemic and politics and all the craziness made the book almost better because it was more realistic. It was like a scientific die hard movie with explosions every minute and so many twists and turns to the plot. You got dizzy. So pay attention and think about who you suspect as the bad guy or guys. I for whatever reason Ahmad an inkling about the mastermind from about 25% in. Idk why. Just did. Sometimes eagerness is excessive is all I’m saying. Looking forward to next book. Loved River and Ava. They kicked ass.
CDC microbiologist Ava is racing against the clock to find out a mysterious illness in the city. River is in the army but gets recruited to help the CDC. His job is to protect Ava and help her with whatever she needs. As they are collecting samples, bombs start going off. Between investigating the illness and finding the terrorist responsible, they are going nonstop. Ava lost her fiancé about a year ago, who was a soldier, and wants nothing to do with another soldier. But being in close contact 24/7 has sparked the attraction between them. But after being blown up several times and held hostage, can they figure out the cure for the illness?
This story is fast paced and a little to close to what is happening now. Plenty of action. A couple of sex scenes. Will keep you on the edge of your seat.
* Voluntarily read and reviewed this for NetGalley *
So I read this series a little out of order, but that was okay. It gave me an excuse to go back and reread books 3 and 4 again. They don’t have to be read in order since they are pretty self-contained stories.
I’ve enjoyed this series because the stories have a lot of action, the women are tough, and the men fall hard. I’ve read a lot of Julie Rowe’s books now and am definitely watching out for her next one!
Whoa! This could be happening right now during COVID-19 2020!
*Warning- if you’ve lost someone to COVID-19 this is probably not the book for you. It feels very real life.*
A strong male, alpha man and soldier- River, and a fearless intelligent doctor- Ava, a believable insta-love, and very, very believable home-grown bioterrorism story. I definitely recommend this book, and will definitely be reading more!
4 stars
I purchased a copy of Outbreak Task Force book 1: Viable Threat by Julie Rowe and this review was given freely.
Intense and action packed with raw language and some mildly steamy scenes. Special Forces Sergeant River and CDC Doctor AVA are thrown together to stop a drug resistant form of meningitis that is killing the Texas population. The Middle East, political and law enforcement corruption, wonderful characters, multiple bombings, and of course the romance make this a well rounded novel and an excellent lead in to the series.
What a story! Action packed from the start. The story goes right along with today’s news.
Well written
Why 3 stars? One for likeable characters. One for the humor and non-extended sex. And one for the situation – a plague. Two stars were lost to a villain easily identified early in the plot and for strong intimations of upcoming stories. An author should compel readers to look for other titles by them, not sketch in characters in one story in the hope we’ll read other titles. So, in the end, this book was okay, but I won’t follow the series.
Great plot and edge of seat details. Would have rated higher except for use of the f___ word almost every sentence.
Dr. Ava Lloyd works for the CDC, investigating outbreaks . Walter Rivers has been sent to be her bodyguard/protector. But the outbreak is more than it seems, it’s also a domestic terrorism event. One with more than one agenda on the go. This book is not for those who do not enjoy a fast paced, action filled, tense thriller type of romantic suspense!
Rivers (no way will Walter ever fit this guy as a name!) ALPHA, bada$$, strong and silent type! He and Ava may have a fast and fiery attraction. Some may find it weird that there would be sexy times during a crisis but what other way than to feel alive and have something tangible to fight for?? It’s not like the sex is all the time, in fact the first mild passionate clinch is almost at the halfway point!
There are ulterior motives, alternate agendas, red herrings galore. The plot is mighty tightly packed with action. I felt it read a bit like a movie. I am a science geek, with the degree to back it up, but not an academic go Google was a good reference tool for anything that got me lost.
This was an incredible story! With a delicious SpecOps warrior and a brainy microbiologist fighting home-grown bioterrorism, this story line could pop-up any day, anywhere……and let’s hope not! There was enough medically technical information without being so highbrow someone outside of the medical community would get lost. There is enough humor, albeit appropriately dark, to help avoid the complete removal of your fingernails from all the chewing. I wouldn’t say this is a cliff-hanger, but I expect we’ll see more of River and Ava in future Outbreak Task Force series stories. At least, I hope so! Wonderful read! LGM
Loved it so much I quickly bought the next two!!
Really enjoyed this book.
This was a very good read, it kept me on the edge of my seat.
