Love this series. Since it is written by many different people it is a good way to find new favorite authors.
I love all these quick novellas in the Haunting of Castle Keyvnor series. Some of them have more ghostly encounters than others, but the Gothic atmosphere of the coast of Cornwall is a great backdrop for these haunting tales.
Romancing the Rogue by Erica Ridley:
While the hero and heroine of this story didn’t encounter any of the ghosts of the castle, the Gothic atmosphere certainly set the backdrop. Rebecca had basically been abandoned at the castle after losing her parents and being taken on as a ward by the recently deceased Earl of Banfield. She kept to herself in the huge castle and found ways to occupy her time, but when the new earl discovers her, he declares she has to get married right away and leave the castle.
Rebecca doesn’t know anyone she’d want to marry. Her one Season in London had been a disaster, and she was snubbed by the one man whom she had considered a friend. However, when that man shows up at the castle for the reading of the will, she thinks he could be helpful in her search for a husband. Daniel has come to apologize for his bad behavior and at least become friends with Rebecca again. He still thinks it impossible for Rebecca to be his wife since he has a disapproving grandmother who would make her life miserable. But maybe becoming a respected member of parliament and one of the most talked-about rakes in London has given Daniel the courage to go for what he wants.
I liked that Rebecca was such a strong character who had learned to live basically alone yet contributed so much to the running of the castle. She was bright and talented and felt no need to seek out a husband unless it was the man she wanted.
Daniel’s excuses were pretty lame, but once he showed up and determined to go after Rebecca, he put a lot of thought and care into what would be the best situation for her.
Once Upon a Moonlit Path by Ava Stone:
Relatives near and far have been summoned for the reading of the will of the castle’s former owner. Cassy certainly doesn’t want to go to a haunted castle, since she has seen ghosts from time to time, but her father must attend, so the whole family has to go. While her family tries to pretend that she isn’t really seeing ghosts and may even consider her mad, Cassy is just trying to get through the stay without embarrassing her family or being haunted. The ghosts have other plans, however, and one ghost in particular plagues her. She finds help from an unexpected source, as she had tried to avoid Jack Hazleton for most of the season. Now he’s determined to get to know her better, and what better place than in a castle in the country, where everyone will be gathered for the will reading. Jack doesn’t quite know how to handle the fact that Cassy sees ghosts, but he supports her nonetheless, which is more than she gets from her family. He’s willing to defy her family to protect her and to make her his wife.
This is a fun, romantic story with just enough chills to be a good story for Halloween or anytime of year.
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by Elizabeth Essex:
I enjoyed the nautical perspective of Captain Lord Harry Beck as he comes back to Bocka Morrow where he once received instruction from the local vicar. He feels like a fish out of water as he convalesces to heal from wounds suffered in battle.
Nessa Teague, one of the vicar’s daughters, has been in love with Harry since they were children. Now she’s going to do everything in her power to get him to notice her and fall in love, even if that means using a witch’s love charm.
I liked how Harry and Nessa worked together. You could tell Nessa would be right at home on a ship, setting off for adventure.
I have purchased all books from Ava Stone and enjoyed this series even though all of the books weren’t by her. I like that the other authors based their stories on her original with their own take and voice. I really liked that some of the other authors I like wrote books in this series. It paid off
