Calm. Detach. Focus. These are the words Verrick–the West’s most notorious gunslinger–has lived by for the last twenty years. But six months ago his life changed when he received a telegram from his grown son, asking for help. Arriving at Sunset Valley, Verrick was disturbed to discover it was impossible to detach himself from this family he hadn’t known about. And when it comes to Cora … it comes to Cora Montgomery–his son’s new sister-in-law–detachment and focus are impossible. She’s as full of live and laughter as he is solitude and silences, and her paintings capture the world in a way Verrick can’t fathom. From the moment he meets her, he’s puzzled by their strong attraction…and concerned too.
But when a revenge-bent rival threatens Sunset Valley, Verrick knows he’ll do anything to protect his new-found family, so he leaves…never expecting Cora to follow. And during their desperate race to save the ranch, he definitely doesn’t expect Cora to carefully peel back the armor he’s built around himself, showing him what a life with a loving woman could be.
Cora Montgomery is changing him, right as he needs all his wits and carefully honed instincts. And the worst part? Verrick isn’t sure he’s strong enough to stop her.
Heat level 3/5: contains violence, minor cursing, and sex behind closed doors

Thank you Caroline Lee. You’ve rekindled my love of western romances and I loved this book!
The characters in this book, Lucas, Shannon, Cora, and Verrick (as well as Blake and a couple of nasties who shall remain nameless) were all nicely developed. Slowly, throughout the story, bits and pieces of their personality were set out, like bread crumbs for the reader to follow. Those bread crumbs endeared this reader to each of the characters. This is still a little different than the books I usually read, but I have to say, I will continue to read this author for sweet romance, and a good understanding of what goes into a plot and suspense.
I recommend reading these books in order, if only to truly understand the family dynamic that exists.
If you want an afternoon of entertainment and excellent reading, this is a book for you. I’ve smiled, tensed up and loved this story-line. Having read about Lucas and Shannon in the first book, I looked forward to the next adventure. Seeing the cover was Verrick, I knew I had to have the book. You gotta love Cora as she is the modern-day independent woman living in the 1800’s. No, it isn’t time travel but Cora has her spirit that brings laughter in the kitchen.
Verrick, a famous gunfighter, has found his son’s family….and Cora. That is a problem coz he doesn’t feel or even want to feel. When his family is in danger he leaves to protect them. Cora is determined to follow him, but will he approve?
It is fun to see a man who don’t want to feel anything fall for a strong woman. Great series, I’m looking forward to read the next one.
Wonderful book full of drama, angst, laughter and tears. The relationships between Verrick and Cora, father and son, sisters, and in-laws all reflect the need for forgiveness and understanding. A western adventure that kept me captivated.
Verrick is a hired gun unemotional and unattached when he meets Cora Montgomery, his son Luke’s new sister-in-law. There is an instant attraction between them but Verrick fights it afraid it will make him weak. Cora is a free spirited, artistic, determined woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants and she wants Verrick. But when hired gun Baker threatens revenge against Verrick and his son Luke, he decides the best thing to do is lead him away. Only Cora decides to follow and he may be putting his family in more danger by his actions. Can he let down his guard enough to let love and Cora in without costing him his family? There were plenty of sexy, funny, and suspenseful moments in this historical western opposites attract romance.
Better than the first one of the series.
I truly enjoyed this book! It is a touching, emotional & suspenseful story.
Cora is very attracted to the handsome
& mysterious, Verrick. He had first come to Sunset Valley, as a gun for hire, at Lucas’s request. Verrick had important secret. Months later, he received a telegram. Verrick practically left without a goodbye. But Cora, was not letting him get away that easy. I loved everything about Cora & Verrick’s story.
I recommend reading Lucas’s Lady first.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!
Verrick is a hired gun that has always been a loner until he meets Cora, his Vixen. She makes him “feel”, something that can be deadly in his profession. Can he change and let people in his life that love him in or should he keep running from feelings? This is an excellent short read by Caroline Lee but it has more spice than some of her other novels!
